Kalyn Ponga re-signs with the Knights

So the reporting by the media is completely wrong then? I mean I'm not saying they haveread his contract but they were certain Ponga had to win a comp with us to be able to leave. Seems a strange clause if that be the case, but considering Ponga has been saying all along he wants to win a comp here, and the all black thing being released if he achieved that goal might make sense if he did want to change code.

If that clause is there, Ponga would be fuming we let Pearce go, not that we were winning the comp next year though.

Who knows. I haven't read anything official from Ponga or the Knights on it.

Someone should ask Gardiner, he loves flapping his gums.

Gardiner knows how to make money though and thats the main thing ..

I'm a bit over worrying about Ponga if he stays great , if not then we will use his mill for someone else. By 2023 season i reckon we could have a couple of blokes that will cover F,B and do a good job .
If Hodgson is as good as they say now, then he should be ready to go after 2 preseasons and the 22 season as well. Toa is another that could cover 1 and do the job.
Just a personal thing but i would like to see a game with Best at F,b just to see how he goes, I reckon that would be a very interesting game to watch .
What about Simi I dont know enough about him to say how he would go in the 1 , but i do know he is a talent even from the little i've seen .
If Ponga does leave we will have time to see who is on the markei , its not something we would have to worry about right away anyway.

I'm thinking that with no Christian Welch or Pat Carrigan signing with the Dolphins, it may make Ponga think twice about the quality of teammate he might end up with.

Dolphins will have to pay a couple of people way overs to get them once they do they'll find recruitment a lot easier, until then they are just pawns for player managers. Pretty funny watching Wayne get the cold shoulder as an aside even when his got blank cheques in hand.

Just thinking after Tino has knocked them back, if Smith knocks them back as well which is a gimme no way he leaves a champion side where he'll be getting paid huge for another $100k or so, is it getting to the stage where the Titans lose the plot and throw $1.5 at Ponga? I know players are always leaving for whatever reason but a marquee signing is a must for them before much longer surely.

You mean the Dolphins?

And yeah they should have gone harder at the start. The off contract list is now looking so bleh they might not even be cap compliant once they do pick up their 30 rejects.

If I’m the Dolphins I make a very generous offer for Reed Mahoney. I think the player market undervalues hookers, allegedly offers of around $600K are turning his head. Arguably the most important position on the field and he’s at worst the fifth best at it in the NRL at age 23 (I’d personally put him higher than 5th), and he’s getting offered less money than Marata Niukore. Make it make sense.

Meh, the Dolphins don't enter the league for another year yet.

They don't need to fill their roster yet, and I'm sure their recruitment team has a list of contracts expiring end of 2022 and will be active going for their targets.

They want Ponga or a big name now to show prospects later that they won't be the first to commit.

Hardly likely they will get a player to jump ship now using the old request a release, and skip playing a year. Middle of this coming season they will be making a larger play, with a few signing along the way prior.

Yeah I’m a bit confused about how he was used in attack this year if he truly wants to be an elite fullback. Need to get him watching some video of Tommy T & Teddy.

We can make up for Ponga's lack of backing up by giving one of our other backs a roving brief in attack or maybe both our centres on either side of the field.

Told you years ago he didn’t like playing in the halves. Had to do it multiple times in the Cowboys U20’s and he came out saying he didn’t like it.

Was coaching suicide when Brown tried getting him to play 5/8th and that cost him his job.

Toohey article about Ponga with a lot of direct quotes.

He says he hasn't talked to Bennett and doesn't know if his manager (his father) has.

Says he doesn't think about his contract - lets his dad do that.

Says he wants to work on perfecting fullback and the way he plays, he can play half in attack anyway.

I think Ponga likes keeping out of the physical D and chilling hanging at the back. Gets involved in attack.

Doesnt make brilliant attempts as the last line of defence.any more either.

Don't think that's ever been a strong point of his, has it?

When he first arrived, he was kamikaze like with his goal line defence.

I used to seriously think he was going to do himself a major injury the way he threw himself at them body head and all to stop them.

Nowadays, it seems he isn't willing to get in front of anyone to stop them and put his body on the line. Probably he knows his value to us in attack and decides not to. He is right, but that isn't what we need in a fullback.
