He was a funny player to watch in our lower grades.
He was the most likely player to make a break I've ever seen in under 20s, but he had an amazing ability to bomb a try. He could make a clean break, run 95 metres without a hand being put on him, and drop the ball when he tried to put it down. he found every other way to bomb a certain try as well. I think he topped our tryscoring with about 20, but could easily have scored 40.
He spent 4 or 5 years at the Knights from age 18 but only played a handful of firstgrade games. He was a much better player after he left and has won 2 grandfinals and a challenge cup for Saint Helens, with a chance at a 3rd title before he leaves.

Spent years playing poker with him when pub poker was the go and also who was that little islander hooker we had? Another remember that random player. Kev was one of the funniest fella's ever, loved him to bits.
 
One player I always forget about is Jason Martin, small but shifty halfback who won dally m rookie in 1990 I think playing for the Bears, local boy who come home to Newcastle for then to get stuck behind Mr A Johns. Think he played for the cows after that then vanished. He was a skillful little fella and had a heart of a lion but came back to newy at the wrong time. Wonder where he is nowadays.
 
Jason Martin, the rock star!! Anyone remember "Take us to the top"? He signed he before Matt Rodwell emerged and took us to the semis in 92. Then we had to try and fit Martin, Hagan and Rodwell in to one team in 93 and it never worked. As this was happening, Matty and Andrew were killing it in reggies in the early rounds and Matty ended up a regular first grader by the end of the year.

He had the hairdo to match aswell rocking the mullet. We had so many great halves back then! Dime a bloody dozen now. I wonder if he was at another club would he have kicked on. I remember an interview saying it wasn't fun any more too much structure. Imagine what he would say now.
 
Luke Walsh and Terrence Seu Seu both playing in the real NRL still, but injured more often than not.

Cooper Vuna - the Uate and Vuna wing double act was my favorite combo of all time, yes been better players but those two taking turns hurtling themselves at break neck speed into kick chasers was fun..
 
I miss Cooper vuna. Bloke would run at a freight train. My favourite wingers

Cooper Vuna he is one of my favourites too loved the way he played .
 
Yep, not the best we have had by a long shot and not overly talented but whole hearted as they come, I reckon if alot of the more talented players we have played with his effort we would be in a better position
 
I don't usually watch after game shows, but the other night there was a discussion between Johns, Gould and Fittler where Gould was saying his main principle in building a squad is to get as many "local" players as possible, and he went through all the successful squads and talked about how they all did it differently, but they all had ways of not relying on mercenaries.
I've been saying the same thing for years, and it's really clear that our way to do it is to develop our own from a young age and only buy players to fill spots we can't cover, or to buy absolute stars.
Anyway, nice to hear someone else say it for a change.

Totally agree but I think we need to look at the junior coaches we have and get them on the same page. At Penrith one of Gould's main jobs was the pathway from juniors to grade footy. We have fantastic juniors but somehow they can't make the jump, well most of them. That role Gould had would help big time

Ryan has done a fantastic job this year.
We have used about 50 players in reserve grade this year and heaps of them have made some great progress.
We finished 5th in reserve grade despite having a different side virtually every week. We probably used about 15 guys in spine positions at various times - Camroux, Baker, Huth, Black, Randall, Malapangi, Lucas, Davies, Hodgson, Sasagi, Wilkinson, Crossland, Hoy off the top of my head are all guys who got a chance to play 1, 6, 7 or 9 - and I'm sure there were others.
I thought it was our best ever development year in reserve grade - all those young guys got a really good chance to show what they can do.
 
One of the advantages of a injury ravaged season is you get the opportunity to blood young guys in reserves due to filling in in 1sts
Hopefully those mentioned will be back next season and they get a full season to play and develop further
