Remember that random player?

Nathan Hinton played 7 games.
I think he only played as a winger and his position was fullback all through the grades.
He was our best player for his agegroup all through the grades and we needed a fullback, but he never got a go for some reason.
Up till a few years ago he was still kicking around in the real NRL.
Treated incredibly shabbily by Brian Smith and typical of Smith's man management of fringe players. He made a very solid home debut in the top grade and was selected on the Tuesday again. When he got to the bus to travel to the next away game, Smith comes up to him and just says "why are you getting on the bus, reserve grade are playing at home this week".

Two players I personally liked watching and was sad to see them go in Paul Rauhihi and Jason Moodie were maybe not as forgotten as others but I thought they would be hard to replace. In comes guys like Perry, Kennedy and Parsons and the rest as they say is history.

Moodie was also similarly unlucky as he was here in 1997 (missed the GF) until 2000 and left the year before we won the 2001 GF as well, playing for the Eels. I guess there were a fair few good players in that backline so some had to miss out.

There were far worse players who weren't really first grade standard like Todd Lowrie who went on to win a premiereship with the Storm

Played a whopping 1 game for us in a win over the Storm in 2009.
Sione Tovo 6 runs 56 metres 16 tackles 1 missed tackle

how 'bout these guys for one -gamers: Jason Temu, Kurt Hancock, Gavin Quinn, Daniel Quinn (played for the Northern Eagles too but who really cares? :giggle:)

Speaking of Pommies, the best one to play for us was Chris Joynt. He was a forward who could play anywhere in the pack. I think he came with Reilly in 1995, had a handful of games and really started looking good, then did his acl and it was all over!

If i remember rightly he was a large lump of a lad too.
Must be thinking of someone else because he wasn't that big .

No, he was pretty mobile and was just starting to give us a real point of difference in attack. Defensively he seemed really efficient. Maybe could have made some difference if he'd been available for the prelim against Manly.

Another random. Brian Carney or the crab as I liked to call him often ran twenty metres sideways and atleast once a game got hammered backwards.

Joey loved him.

Watching Newcastle Hawks play on NITV right now.
Luke Walsh, Brad Tighe, Tyler Randell, Will Smith and a heap of Knights lower graders - Schillings, Briggs, - also Roberts-Davis and Jacob Gagai playing for the opposition (walgett)

Grandfinal of the tribal league on NITV at 4.10
Newcastle Hawks with a bunch of old Knights V a south coast side

What ever happened to Jacob Gaigai? Just never lived up to the name?
Was in the Souths system last year before Covid and ended up playing Presidents cup. He was in one of the sides Maitland beat.
He had 2 or 3 really good games for us in lower grades, but 9 out of 10 games were rubbish.

Josh Mantellato - a late bloomer who was top point scorer in the real NRL for 3 years in a row - joined us and was top point scorer in reserve grade - used his radar boot to qualify Italy for the World cup - somehow got a spot in the ESL on the back of his world cup performance and had a couple of great years for Hull KR where he came close to being top point scorer in the ESL 2 years in a row.
I notice he is still playing a bit and played in the reserve grade grandfinal in the real NRL for Wyong.
For a guy that didn't enter an elite system till he was about 24 he really managed to have a brilliant career, and it only ended in the ESL because he kept breaking his arm and it wouldn't heal properly.
He played 1 firstgrade game for us and was probably the best goalkicker we've had.

better known as “lolly legs”

I forgot the highlight of Mantellato's career.
The only field goal he ever kicked was for Italy to beat England 15-14 in a warm up game for the world cup in 2013.

Broncos apparently signing Albert Kelly. Remember he spent about a year here during the Bennett years, never played grade for us, went off the rails but was an exciting player at his best.

Dane Laurie was another example, I think he played a couple of games but behind is drinking issues, and violence issues he was a similar story to Kelly.

I remember he got a fair bit of hype around him when he started out for the Tigers because he was a tough nut that could put a hit on and make a break but yeah never lived up to that hype.

Good for him.
He was supposed to be off the booze as part of his deal for us and was let go because he got in trouble for smashing a light at a nightclub.
He looked pretty good in his few games of reserve grade, but had a long list of alcohol related minor incidents already.
