Hull Kingston Rovers can confirm that they have agreed to release
Clint Newton from the remaining year of his contract.
Newton will leave the club at the end of the season to join NRL outfit
Penrith Panthers on a two-year deal.
The former
Melbourne Storm man has played 97 matches since his debut in 2008 and has been largely an ever present for the Robins.
Rovers Chairman Neil Hudgell admitted it was a difficult decision to allow Newton to return to Australia.
“We were approached some time back by the Panthers for permission to speak to Clint,” Hudgell commented.
“We eventually granted them permission and having had many discussions with Clint over a number of weeks we have agreed to his release.
“Clint’s reasons for wanting to return home now are perfectly understandable and given his exemplary service to the club over the last four years we were prepared to grant him a release.”
Penrith Panthers General Manager Phil Gould said: “On behalf of the Panthers I would like to thank Hull KR Chairman Neil Hudgell and his management team for the professionalism and compassion they have displayed in allowing Clint to return to the NRL”
“Clint speaks glowingly of the treatment he has received since arriving at Hull Kingston Rovers and I know it was a tough decision for him to come back to Australia.”
“We at the Panthers know we are getting a quality player and the fans of Hull KR can rest assured Clint will be representing their great club and the English Super League as he plays his remaining years in the NRL competition.”
