Of course they were playing some brilliant football, and you should have tipped them, they were in great form at the end of the year. That doesn't mean though that they had been great all year. Like I've heard Sterlo say a number of times, in the current comp you don't have to be the best team to win the comp, just be in form at the right time of the year. They didn't really start to make their run until after the halfway point I'm pretty sure. They did deserve to win in the form that they were in, however you can't say that they really dominated that year like Parra had.

Stone seems to have an impressive record at lower grades.

I don't really know a great deal about Stone. Does anyone know which lowergrade sides he's coached and how they performed?
 
Why all the discussion?

The decision will have absolutely nothing to do with what the members & fans want but will depend on a small coterie who will foist the decision on the club and then take no responsibility on the outcome.

The only time that a coach was accepted from day one was Malcolm Reilly and coaches of his calibre don't come along very often...........

Sit back and await the outcome is my advice (For what it is worth)
 
We know what we think will have no impact on who they decide to hire, but this is an exciting, yet scary time for our club and I for one like speculating about it.

How many times does the best team for the entire season win the comp though? Not that often. Last year Mebourne were minor premiers, in 2006, Melbourne definitely had a better season than Brisbane.

In 2001 Parra were the best side for the whole year, but of course there was the mitigating factor that we were missing Johns for a fair bit of the season.

Wests were awesome in 2005, Sheens deserves plenty of credit for the way he had a young, no-name team performing.
 
I'd love Gould but that's a snowflakes chance in hell of happening. For that reason i went with Folkes cause hes actually interested in the job and his experience I believe is what is needed for our situation.

Yeah, you're right he does deserve a lot of credit for the way he had that young team playing (very exciting attacking football). Quite similar to Smithy with our young ones actually.
 
Peter Mortimer (Daniel Mortimer's father) did not want Daniel to resign with the Bulldogs (and instead sign with Paramatta--which he did) because he thought "Steve was still coaching a 1980s style of football ... It was a game plan based heavily on the forwards. The game had moved on, but the club had not." Source: The Daily Telegraph. I wouldn't mind if Rick Stone got the job.
 
Yeah, I saw that too ... not a lot of Folkes love out there, apart from on this forum.

He also didn't want him to sign there because of the bad influences of Mason and Maitua. Would Folkes even fit in with our current club culture?
 
Wouldn't say I love Folkes, just thought his experience would be valuable which i still believe is the case.

i totally agree !! Gary Kemble was the worst kiwis coach ever , kiwis lost all there games that year except for that close win against france . I just couldn't get over how Kemble got sacked , Steve Kearney and Wayne Bennett put there hand up to coach kiwis and Graham Lowe stuck by his mate Kemble he wanted him to keep coaching the kiwis after that shocking year. Lowe a idiot !! Sorry to go off topic i picked Steve Folkes ! i wanted a experienced coach , but reading these articles about Rick Stone he sounds ready give him a chance .
 
I just felt sorry for Brian McClennan out of that whole debacle. Maybe Lowe couldn't handle that there was a better Kiwis coach than him pulling the strings?

But what McClennan did for NZ league ... I don't think we'd have won the world cup, even, without his spell in charge. He really reinstalled the passion and pride in the Kiwi jersey. Best coach ever.
 
Burraston said there had been "probably a dozen" expressions of interest from coaches interested in Newcastle's soon-to-be-vacant top-grade position.

"We've had interest even from England," Burraston said.

"We've received an application from overseas, obviously a few assistant coaches and four or five established coaches."

It is understood the Knights have been approached by experienced tacticians such as Steve Folkes, Graham Murray and Graeme Lowe, but Rick Stone, who has spent four years as assistant to Brian Smith and Michael Hagan, remains the frontrunner.
