Rick Stone is a pretty good coach. Did extremely well in the QLD cup and I think he does deserve a chance in the NRL.

How about Stephen Kearney with Harragon and Joey assistants? And Matty the talent scout??

Harragon maybe as an extra forwards coach, and Joey for the halves, but I don't think either have enough coaching experience to be assistants, it's a bigger job than most people think. Matty on the other hand has a lot of coaching experience from Melbourne, and he has a brilliant football brain. I think he'd make a wonderful assistant, and maybe even become head coach in a few years after he gets some experience. None for head coach at the moment though imo.

Rick Stone as head coach, Matty the assistant coach and have Joey working with the halves.

I cant see Joey being involved with the team Full time as assistent. He would have to give up media commitments, so a Head Coaching role would be the only thing to drag him away from that, and i cant see that happening, the club wouldnt do it, and I dont think Joey would do it.

Matthew Johns has very limited coaching experience. You can't attribute much of the Storm's success other than Cronk's development to him.

He himself said last year when asked if he had ever seen any wrestling moves being taught there that he only really worked with Cronk, and didn't see any team training sessions!

And also, since he has been sacked this year, Melbourne have improved. They were in a slump at the start of the year, but have won 7 out of their last 9, if you weren't aware. They won 3 out of 7 to start the year.

You need to get your facts straight before you start laughing at others, Matho.

If I had to guess... I'd say that has more to do with Finch's arrival than Matt's sacking.

I can't really see Joey being involved with the team fulltime either... unless Matt gets hired as HC... which is another thing I can't see happening.

Matthew Johns not ruling out Knights job

Matthew Johns' management team wouldn't rule out the possibility of the fallen media personality making a run at the vacant Newcastle coaching job.

Speculation surfaced on Monday that Johns was considering applying for the post following Brian Smith's decision to walk out on the final year of his deal to link up with the Sydney Roosters.

"Matthew is keeping his career options open," was all manager John Fordham would say when asked if Johns was contemplating applying for the role.

Johns was suspended indefinitely by the Nine Network in May following the airing of a report detailing his involvement in the group sex scandal which occurred during Cronulla's 2002 pre-season trip to New Zealand.

He had juggled his media commitments with coaching roles at various NRL clubs - the most notable of which was his regular consultancy role with Melbourne.

That role was also discontinued in May, though Johns had received plenty of praise for his coaching nous.

Johns is one of the Knights' favourite sons, with many in the region still upset at the way he was squeezed out of the club due to salary cap restraints in 2000 after 176 games in the red and blue.

"He's loved by everybody at Newcastle, he's been an integral part of our club for a long time," Knights chief executive Steve Burraston told the Nine Network.

"I'm not sure if he wants to do it, but I'm sure he would be a strong contender."

Asked if the sex scandal would impact on Johns's chances of getting the job, Burraston said: "I think that we're talking about something that happened seven years ago.

"I don't think it's a public matter, I think it's something for him and his family to work out.

"I think we're well beyond that."

Obviously it has pretty much nothing to do with Johns, but if he is practically coaching the side, as Matho claims:

and look at him without Johns and Folau and Crocker and Geyer, not doing as well...

then he was doing a really bad job and things have got a lot better since he left. Not doing as well? Doing a lot better after he left this year.

It's important to get a bloke with experience, considering our squad lacks alot of it.

I wouldn't mind Steve Folkes as coach, that's for sure.

Hmm conflicting reports on Matty Johns intentions.

In an article on leaguehq, the manager of Joey and Matty has come out and ruled them both out supposedly, whereas in the article just above it says he hasnt ruled out any possibilities.

This will probably take a fair while to develop, but my money is on Stone.

Half of me thinks that, but the other half thinks it would be great for one of our assistants to get it, because it would be an easier transition, he knows what's been going on with Smith, he could keep it going in the same direction without any problems.

Plus if the coach for next year is already there, it totally dispels any notion that the players will take it easy for the rest of this year.

I would hate to see what happened to Fittler, happen to either of the Johns brothers. It would somewhat make a cloud over their stellar careers on the field.

Yeh gotta agree there.

Rick Stone is most probably the likely contender, has support from quite a few players and the senior players will have input as to who they want to coach them.

Joey & Matty should be thrown out the window.

Look at Fittler!!!

I think that's a bit harsh. Why should they be judged off of Fittler's success (or lack there of)?

Not saying the Johns' brothers should get the gig... though if I were on the board and the two of them put their hand up... I'd definately bring them in and hear what they had to say. They could have some great ideas for the club that could make me seriously consider hiring them.

If either put their hand up (sounds like Matt could)... they should definately be given a job interview IMO. I don't see why you wouldn't explore all options.

Well look at the Roosters side.. Can you blame him ? :p

But yeah Rick Stone is a very experienced coach... Maybe not in the NRL but still none the less in the QLD Cup which is still a pretty high standard. I reckon give him a shot.. Wouldn't mind Rip Taylor either TBH.

steve folkes is my pick.we cant afford to have a rookie coach with our playing roster.but out of the rookies i think kearneys ready for it.
