I can't really see Mal wanting to leave his Qld coaching position to coach the Knights. I mean seriously that would be like Gus going to coach the Broncos, I don't think it'll ever happen.

It would be good to see our assistant coach Rick Stone get the step up to the leading roll, after all he has been there for the recent changes and obviously has the respect of the players and would be the best choice to continue the good work that Smithy has done.....

if we want joey/matty in the camp it should be either working with the halves or as an assistant coach

Kearney is a plonker, if you want a Kiwi Coach Brian Mclennan at Leeds is head and shoulders above Kearney, but you are Newcastle and you are special, my thoughts are that Joey and/or Mathew must be in the mix somewhere, keep it in the family guys.

Kearney is great!

McClennan would be even better, but I forgot when I suggested him earlier that he is on the mega mega MEGA bucks at Leeds haha.

Much more than Smith will be on at the Roosters.

Would you prefer him at the kiwis or at the knights??

He could do both ... if our assistant coach is so great, he would be able to take time off to coach the Kiwis. And realistically, there is only ever one mid-year test anyway. We could ask for a Sunday game after that, and there wouldn't be much disruption.

What about Warren Ryan? Any chance of getting him out of retirement, or is he too old?

IIRC, he was in his 60s when he coached us the first time around. And he retired from coaching after that.

Lol @ people suggesting Joey or Matty for that matter should be coach.

Indeed.

Or the bye seeing as we potentially have more kiwi reps then NSW reps.

Matt Johns getting the job wouldn't be the worst thing IMO. It's been said that he's got a great football mind and he did have a minor coaching role at Melbourne when he was working under Bellamy. I also recall hearing reports that he was doing a good job down there.

Matt being the HC would also mean that Joey would have a bigger role within the team... and that IMO isn't a bad thing. He's arguably the best player to ever play the game... and I'm thinking he'd have some great ideas that could better the team. He's also helped several different clubs out (mainly in the halves though) and has been in NSW's origin camp. So it's not like he or Matt have no experience in coaching roles.

They're also very close to Gus... meaning he could potentially mentor them through the process... Rick Stone would still be down there too... meaning they'd have some guys behind the scenes helping them out.

I'm still a little torn on the idea of the Johns' brothers coaching Newcastle... though if I woke up tomorrow morning and that was on the back page of the paper... I wouldn't be entirely disappointed.

Joey and Matty have amazing football minds and knowledge..and Matty I feel would be a spectacular coach, see what he has done at Melb...obviously Bellamy isnt all that special, he has had Johns under him and an awesome playing roster under him at Melb for the last 3 minor prems...a coach of a team with Smith, Slater, Folau, Crocker, Inglis, Geyer, Cronk will do well if my 5 year old neice coached them, and look at him without Johns and Folau and Crocker and Geyer, not doing as well...

So those of u suggesting that it is inappropriate to suggest (or select) M.Johns as a coach IMO are quite misguided...and then turn around and suggest Folkes! hahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahhahaha

I really think Rick Stone has the running at the moment with Trent Robinson as the assisant with both being under Smith & both would have had a great insight to what the long term plans where (so the change over would be very smooth). Maybe McGuire could be brought into the set up but very unlikely. The Knights won't chance it with Matthew or Andrew Johns with them being only very part-time assisants at other clubs and the other two young coaches in Filter & Clearly hasn't set the world on fire at all.........Folkes is surely not being consided at all as a head coach maybe a part of the back ground staff but as a head coach it would really be like bring back Warren Ryan or Mal Reilly it would be such a negative move towards the future & a short term option. The next coach will most likely be at the Knights for the next 4-5 years at the least while these current group a together. Rip Taylor has no chance in coaching the Knights at all, but Cronulla's assisant Shane Flanagan could be a huge chance........

Gould mentioned on the Sunday Roast today that personally he would like to see the Johns brothers coach the boys.

He could have a very strong influence on their decisions as to whether they want to coach the Knights or not ;) (provided the board want them to coach).

Kearney wouldnt be a bad option.

For some reason it seems as though if they don't go for an experienced coach it will more than likely be someone such as Stone. He's been in our system for a while, has the respect of the players and staff, and could probably slide into the role pretty well.

I don't think Flanagan would work for us. If he's learnt a lot of his methods from Ricky Stuart then he could come in with a completely defensive approach. Although we've been great in defense this year, our game still relies heavily on attack. I don't think a big change in structure like that would be in the team's best interests.

He also spent 10 years at Parra under Smith....he would know the structures that Smith has put in place at the Knights & the way the club has too move into the future....
