What’s has gone wrong and who is to blame

I think their cap must be pretty tight . Ricky was nearly crying after their game on the weekend talking about the prospect of losing him. Also prob don't want to hinder a couple of youngsters they have coming through.

I would have thought they were loaded given their offer to Leo, and now apparently interested in KPP. Fogarty is much more important to their side than either Leo or KPP would be.

Not upset enough to pay him about the 20th biggest salary for a halfback in the NRL though apparently.

I don’t know, if the Raiders, who cling to every half decent player they get like they’re made of gold, don’t want a guy badly enough to pay him $600K…

… and if there’s only one suitor for him who’ll offer that $600K which, to be clear, is less than what is currently being earned by Lewis Dodd, Jackson Hastings and Lachlan Ilias…

… but they DO have money to throw around in their pursuit of KPP and Leo Thompson…

… MAYBE that says something about the quality of the player…

Has a legit claim to owning the best kicking game in the comp.
Mitchell Moses, DCE, Cleary, Reynolds all clearly better IMO.

Our depth is among the worst in the comp. No depth in the middles or outside backs. Once JSaf was ruled out and Leo previously, our middles was absolutely depleted.

Halfback - Neither Cogger or Crossland are good enough to steer the team around at NRL level, one's living off 15 minutes in GF and the other is a utility player.

Dylan Lucas being out - I'm starting to think he's the most important player in the team not named Ponga. I get the feeling he's starting to become a leader in the side and we've been worse since he's been out and miss his reliability both sides of the ball and effort.

Marzhew - Getting worse every week and if wasn't for lack of depth on the wing, I'd seriously consider dropping him. His hands are a total liability and confidence is at a low.

Ponga's been quiet in the last few games which is alarm bells for me after yesterday.

Sharpe has struggled the last couple of games but it'd be stupid to move back to the wing.

Fogarty $600 for two years , Brown 1.3 for ten . At least we know one of the can kick . He has made it hard for us virtually every time we play Canberra

Hey back here longtime, just knew be too frustrating to speak in forums the way we played 2-3years now.
Wish we new the answers, i said years ago AOB not the answer to get the next lvl but not sure what options there are really.
To be fair alot of clubs are trying to find that success apart from Dogs Storm everyone seems the same to me.
In terms of Brown signing hasn't laced up for us yet and we need to throw money and take a big leap..everyone thought we crazy to do that for Ponga with zero experience and turn out well lets hope Knights and Dlyan work out

Lot of wrap on Sanders the halfback who arrived from Parra that's why Raiders aren't desperate to keep him.

I’m always a bit hesitant to want to rush players on who are doing a good job for a player that might be good…especially when Stuart doesn’t have a good record of bringing through halves historically.

Oh well, we have enough to worry about with our team without also worrying about the Raiders haha.

There’s talk, Canberra will only offer him one year deal about 500k. Manly offering two years 1.2mil
Canberra have offered the entire pot to all the knights rejects who evidently have shown more promise than our entire outfit so far this year. They’d maybe like to but simply can’t…there’s a foreshadowing, maybe they will come after Cant

There’s a scholar in the UK called Dr Damian Hughes who applies organisational theory and models of culture on to sporting teams, particularly European football teams. Here’s a summary of his 5 types of successful team:

I’ve been trying to apply this to the Knights and understand if they are aspiring to one type of culture but I’ve come to the conclusion that we’re falling between several stools which ultimately makes for a confused operation which shows in the pitch.

I really do wonder what they do all week not only to create attacking and defensive patterns but also what type of culture they are trying to build.

First the good part. I think our tackling has been outstanding this year. We are second defensively. That gives you a lot to build on. For mine, Ponga is now doing elite stuff defensively I've never seen from him before. Gone are the days you can get him involved in the ruck close to the line and then grubber to the in goal on the next play knowing he'll be out of position. Yesterday he cut one of their front rowers in half with a tackle to the right of the posts, then was *easily* in position for the grubber in the next play over to the left.

Our attack is being stifled so much through dropped balls. If we hold it a bit, our defensive effort will keep us in most games. I just stated elsewhere, 4 losses of possession on play zero of a seven tackle set from the 20 will cruel you every game. I've never seen it before. I'm not going to be too critical of our spine when simply never held on to it.

I thought the dumbest play of the day was, down 8-0 and being under the pump, we got to half way on tackle 5 and Brailey scooted from dummy half, realised it was the last and threw the ball away, turning it over on their 40 instead of further down field. The Tigers got a roll on from the loose play and Bula came up with a great play to score from his own kick. But truth be told, he should never have had that opportunity if Brailey's game awareness was where it should be.

In short, attitude is shown by the defensive effort, and the effort is definitely there. The attack will come if we hold the ball. The issue with resting on defence and not getting results is it eventually erodes the defensive attitude.

Whilst I agree mostly with this, WT did grubber through and KP was well out of position, I haven't bothered to put myself through watching it again to see if he was in the D line prior, but that exact scenario happened against WT.

I agree just hold the ball FFS. How hard can it be to catch a ball you have been catching for thousands of times. Handling has been a big issue for us all year, and I have no clue how that can be so. Errors are expected, to an acceptable standard. It will happen. But what we are seeing is almost impossible I would think from a professional team.

The yips OB called it, assume referring mostly to Greg. Well, solution, send Greg down, and let him get his Yips out of him away from the NRL team.

He was towards the middle expecting the ball to go to Galvin and Luai setting up on the left but the ball went to Bula and he was too far gone to get back across in time

The whole team definitely has the yips with the ball, not just Marzhew. I definitely agree Marzhew needs to drop down to cup at the very least to get his own confidence back, but just dropping him back to NSW cup isn’t going to solve the whole team playing nervous and down on confidence. Unfortunately there’s not really anything you can say to fix that. The best solution is winning.

Errors definitely aren’t the whole story, the Storm have made 64 from 5 games, 12.8 per game vs our 15. It’s where, when and how. Doing it on the opposition line trying something isn’t so bad, getting the dropsies 10 metres out from your line with no defenders anywhere near is just unforgivable.

Personally I’m happy with the odd mistake if they’re because they’re actually firing some shots and asking questions of the defensive line.

As for Marzhew, I dunno if anything much would be gained from dropping him. Unless he feels like he’s got a lot of noise in his head atm. Otherwise just get the old soapy ball out and keep practicing … the only answer for the whole team is hard work. On attacking structure, positioning on the field, errors, backing up … we need a big mindset change on all those aspects. Earn your paycheck for goodness sake!!!

Yeah, like I've said, 4 seven tackle sets we didn't get to tackle 1. I'm kind of disturbed more now by the fact that we completed our first 9 sets and threw very little shape at them in that time. Points at that time would have lifted the whole team.

Yeah I agree, if it's a confidence thing punting him to ressies might make it worse and you won't see him again.

If there is deeper issues with his technique or the protection he is getting on kicks you don't fix that in a week or two.

We dropped Young in 2023 for a game after he was absolutely horrific against the Dolphins at home then he went on to obviously have a great season. I’m just not sure that the outside back options are strong enough to handle Marzhew in reserve grade.

I think the difference with Young was a big part of it was attitude. He had technique issues too but he wasn’t even trying in that Dolphins game. Those players you can drop for a game and bring them back as an attitude adjustment can make a big difference. Marzhew on the other hand is trying his guts out and I think that’s making his errors worse.

I don’t think it’s a simple decision to drop him either looking at the possible replacements. Schiller is a no brainer to come back in but I don’t think McCarthy is up to it to be honest. He’s ok for a game here and there, but he definitely can’t carry close to Marzhew’s work load.
