Tyson Gamble

Was talking up Clune to and ignored the fact I was saying he was being kept out of FG by Norman of all players.
 
I don’t know how I feel about this, I think he’d be a better 13 than Kurt mann if you were trying to go for that link man but if we run out with gamble and Clifford/clune in the halves we’re doomed to fail.
Hopefully I’m proven wrong but I just don’t see it.
 
Gamble isn’t really an off the cuff player. We’re not signing Sam Walker here lol. We’re signing a big loud bloke who’ll yell at people and kick to the corners.

I haven’t really talked him up. I’ve just said he’s more competent and consistent with his effort than the players we have now, and he’s better than the likes of Jock Madden and Jaeman Salmon. Damned him with faint praise if anything. In fact my first reaction when I heard the club was likely to sign him was anger and frustration.

I’ve said a lot of things about Gagai’s defence and I’ve got a pretty good memory. I’ve said I don’t think it was as bad as made out when he was here last time, anyone would have looked bad in that team, and he was the lightning rod for criticism because he was on a ****load of money. I’ve said it got better as he got older and more experienced - it was **** when he arrived but he improved - and that it can’t be that bad because he didn’t cause that many problems for Souths. I’ve said that because he’s not the biggest bloke certain matchups are really hard for him and you need inside pressure to stop him ending up 1-on-1. I think I said that the right edge would likely be better defensively than the left one because I was expecting Pearce and Hunt to be a part of it. And I’ve said that he’s a talker on the field and that’s a key part of successful defending. And I think I’ve said repeatedly that all our outside backs get left 1-on-1 constantly because their inside men don’t hustle across with enough urgency (Frizell & Fitz terrible culprits in this regard, Barnett & oddly Brodie try harder) so anyone who defends out wide for us is gonna have issues - the good sides don’t do this and few centres and wingers can put out fires by themselves (Hymel Hunt and Edrick Lee have both been well above average defensively for us).

But I never said Souths “fixed his defence” because that makes no sense. Unless they made him bigger somehow, they couldn’t have “fixed” him.

I’ll put my hand up and say I didn’t expect him to be as dire as he is at the moment and I don’t know if that’s a lack of effort or he’s just past it, but the way even middling outside backs just stroll past him 1-on-1 now is startling. He’s the worst he’s ever been defensively at the moment, he’s never been close to this bad before. He always came up with the odd bad read or had games where he’s been flattened eg marking Moses Suli or Latrell Mitchell, but it’s like someone filled his boots with lead now.

I’m pretty sure Dom just does what he tells him to out there and credit to Dom for trusting his inside man and staying marked up on his own opposite number, but I don’t understand how he’s resisting the urge to come in every time at the moment lol.
