Tyson Gamble discussion

Gamble is an ok player, enthusiastic, mistake prone, effort and win at all cost, type you hate to play against but the type that when he is alongside you it’s a feel good thing, I didn’t like his signing but now I am happy with it

I said when Gamble signed that he was at the Broncos kind of like Josh King was here for a few years. He'd start the year in reggies, the broncos would unsuccessfully try a fee 5/8s, Gamble would go well and force his way in to the top grade and go well. The coach would look at him at the end of the year, decide he was a weak link, he'd start the next season in reggies and the cycle would repeat. He took a long while to make the 6 his own here is similar circumstances. But since he has our attack has looked a lot better in stucture. We have just beaten a side used to success running second deep in the comp, and been much the better side in doing so.

When was the last time we could compete with a top 2 side? Instead of us repeating the same cycle, I really hope he starts next season as our number 6.

Hated the bloke when he was a bronco and played against us especially when he milked that penalty.

Love the guy in red and blue he is our Josh Reynolds.

I do thing that Gamble has been very much an underrated player when he came to the Broncos in 2021. I had seen him playing prior to this in NSW & Qld cup games and rated him as pretty good 5/8 who had a good kicking game. The Broncos were having a really bad season that year and pretty sure Gamble came in halfway through the season and that year there was a different halves combination nearly every game or two. Pretty hard to get any consistency in that scenario and team morale was at a pretty low ebb, but can remember Kev saying at one point (thinking it was their win over Titans when Gamble got MOTM) that they had found their No. 6 only for him to not finish the season with an injury. Last season Gamble had to contend with Billy Walters and Kelly competing for the 5/8 spot and was playing QCup until Kev realised it wasn't working and Gamble came in after about 4 or 5 rounds I think. The Broncos progressed to 4th on the ladder when Gamble was injured and replaced by Mam and never returned to that No. 6 slot until the game against Dragons where Broncos lost and went out of the 8 - not Gamble's fault as they were spirally down whilst he was out injured.

The start of this season at the Knights has been very disruptive to the consistency of our play with the experiment of Ponga at 5/8 and his HIA's with Gamble coming into that 5/8 role a few games into the round and performing well I think with Hastings. We are not privy to what the coach's instructions are and I thought perhaps Hastings and Ponga were given the kicking duties mainly up till now and only Gamble if they were under pressure. Throw in a change of sides on the field for the halves and needing to adjust quickly to that, but think this is working so much better now. Now that the team is gelling much better, his game will only get better. He just needed a team to give him that opportunity.

He and Jackson are both a lesson for other halves and a great rebuke to the SuperCoachification of rugby league thinking.

We see all these teams with really athletic, dynamic outside backs, and they just don’t see good ball that much. They’re capable of creating something out of nothing but don’t get given many chances to do it. Somehow “elite half” at some point became “guy who gets lots of last touch try assists and/or scores a bunch of tries himself”, rather than someone who facilitates for others. Really in the past decade or so, only pre-Brisbane Adam Reynolds and to a lesser extent James Maloney and Cam Munster, have been recognised as elite halves without eye-popping individual attacking stats.

Like, I would call Mitchell Moses a great player, but is he a great halfback? Or is he a great player who happens to play halfback. See also Jahrome Hughes.

Hastings and Gamble both have some decent last touch assists from nice passes or neat kicks, but these things aren’t the core of their game. In both cases their game is built on drawing numbers and being willing to take hard shots in order to create time and space for others to shine. An unselfish, tough style of play which rubs off on others too I reckon. Neither have cracked double figures for try assists per NRL dot com (or SuperCoach I imagine), yet we’ve scored more tries than any other team.

Not everyone can produce a highlight reel like Mitch Moses or Cody Walker, but there’s plenty more talented than Tyson Gamble out there who don’t make it. Imagine Jake Clifford with Tyson Gamble’s attitude and unselfishness.

A bit of a sliding doors moment when Gamble chip kicked and Riley Jones easily out sprinted him to the ball. It was like, the old model goes good, but look what the new model can do!

Yeah, the new model can run faster than the talented guy that put the lovely chip kick in , I know which I'd rather . But Billy on the other hand for the first time in a long time we look like a team of 30 that can and will do the job rather than a team of a few that can do it and some that fill spaces, although that may be being a bit harsh.

Couldn’t find the Tyson Gamble thread so this is kind of the wrong place to post.

I’d like Tyson to stay with the Knights for the rest of his career. He can play multiple positions, goes hard, has that bit of niggle and seems to be well liked by the squad and staff. If he’s not in the 17 in a couple of years when we win the premiership he can be in the cup team as very solid back up and showing the way for the youngsters.

Found it for ya. :)

So, watching Gamble run in the Army camp with all those awkward water cans etc, I was thinking my back would be destroyed if I tried that.

In unrelated news, Toohey says Gamble has been getting cortisone injections for months - so from around the time of the Christmas break.

Good thing he was able to carry a poorly made billy cart across a creek just before the Christmas break. His back wouldn't have let him afterwards.

I imagine it will be an anxious time for Gamble while he recovers from the surgery, hopefully he makes a full recovery.

I wish the club had provided details of his injury so we know how serious it is.
