Toohey's News

Think Hopwood can play that Saulo role with ease. Come on and make tackles, not worry about ball playing or being a massive metre eater. Hopefully he can grow into, and then grow that role.

Best says he’s close to resigning and that his brother will be down after he finishes school in November

Gagai is going to overtake Tony Butterfield for most games played at Newcastle. He will now sit in 4th spot behind Joey, Kidley and Buderus.

McCarthy has taken up his player option for next season.

Alex Moore and Joel Edwards were apparently left shattered after they were sacked without warning. Have been swamped with messages of support from players and club staff. Wes Naiqama and Adam Blair have taken over the Flegg side for the rest of the season.

Toohey gives a rap to Head of High Performance Will Markwick because we can name a near full strength side at this time of the year.

Baxter Best finishing school is good.
Bradman went all in on a footy career and left school and moved to Newcastle when he was too young to drive.

On Wes Naiqama and Blair coaching Flegg - the 4 guys I really like in Flegg are Seve and Nonu, who play the same positions as Wes played, and Hilliar and Bates, who play the same positions as Blair played - so I think it's a good direction to go.

Interesting McCarthy has picked up his offer.

Curious if it’s a case of no other offers atm, or if he’s been proposed a decent shot at starting centre.

Lots of talk about how he was most improved in pre season and training really well. Stats in Cup look alright (aware it doesn’t necessarily translate to NRL). But not sighted near the first team.

For those that watch Cup, is he in with a shot or replacing Gagai? Or is he grasping onto another year in Cup.

I didn’t mind what I saw of McCarthy in first grade and it seemed like he was kind of ahead of McEwen for a bit and now McEwen is a mainstay in the team and extended. I can see McCarthy being one of the cheaper guys who sticks around. Fingers crossed

McCarthy looks stronger and fitter than previous years. He is one of the top 5 every game in reserves.

Kyle is 22 yo. Imagine where Hunt will be in 2 years.

POS wanted to let McCarthy go, no? He is a Cup standard player imo

I think it’s probably McCarthy’s last chance to get a shot at a first grade spot, so makes sense he’d stick around and try his best. Not sure I see it happening for him, though.

I backed Tommy Cant to become a first-team regular at the start of the season, but I could have cashed the bet out at a big loss a few weeks back. Now it's starting to look like it's worth hanging on to. I'm backing Kyle to do the same in 27.

PS. It makes sense for him to stay, he knows the club, he's getting good coaching, and there's a centre spot opening, and who knows if Bradman's hammys can stand a full season (touch wood though). I doubt it was a decision solely due to a lack of offers.

Just looking at Kyle's stats in reserve grade.
He is having his best year of his 4 years for every stat.
Run metres, tackle efficiency, try assists, tries per game, line breaks.
Averaging nearly 50 fantasy points per game.
Last year he ran for 100 metres per game - this year 135
Last year he tackled at 87% efficiency - this year 91% and he has made 10 less tackles in 12 games than he made in 19 last year
Last year he made 5 linebreaks in 19 games - this year 8 in 12 games.

etc etc

Every stat looks better.
Part of that might be because he is in a pretty good side this year, as opposed to pretty crap sides in his other 3 years.

Stats or no stats still think he might be the better option as centre and gives those younger, less experienced a bit more time to mature and push for selection.

Club only has a 150k development spot.
Frizell says he hopes he won't be "disrespected" by a low offer. Holbrook and O'Sullivan both want him to stay.
Toohey hints the club might find a way to move someone on (Shiller and McCarthy were mentioned).

Mentions the fake chant and says everyone hated it at the Tigers game.

Says Brown knows he had a poor game then talks up Brown's defence and gives stats.

Says Dobson is doing well coaching reserve grade and mentions his contract ends this year.

Says Jefferies also is at the end of his contract and he'll need to do well this year.

Says we have signed a big 17 year old prop called Elijah Galloway from Southport for next year. He has also represented Qld reds in Union at junior level. He is expected to add size to SG Ball next year.
