Toohey's News

I wonder if this means they will take a chance on Josh Schuster. Not saying we should but the upside is that it won't take up our last roster spot and there will still be 500 k plus left to front load contracts.

Hooker is the position we look a bit slim in, talent wise.
Malachi Smith hasn't looked as good in Flegg as he did in Ball. Jacob Davis is in his last year of Flegg I think.
Diesal Hagan looks good, but very young still.
Didn't they have Jack Langdon also coming though last year....I think he was younger than most of the others? Do you know what has happened with him @Billy?

So all these guys will be in their last year of Flegg or first year of reserve grade in 2026 - age wise

1 Fletcher Sharpe
2. Kyle McCarthy (not signed for 2026?)
3 Wilson De Coursey
4 Connor Votano
5 Sosia Latu
6 Jye Linnane
7 Zac Herdegan
8 Cody Hopwood
9 Malachi Smith (not signed for 2026?)
10 Jack Cullen
11 Jermaine McKewn
12 Elijah S-L (not yet signed for 2026)
13 Jack Hilliar

No mention of Sua, Myers, McCarthy, Sutton, Bryan or Rahme by Toohey this morning - maybe they are all considered part of the senior squad now - despite being Flegg aged.

Sua and Bryan both till end of 25 at moment and both in NRL squad so maybe it’s a wait and see with them how they handle first grade if they get a chance soon.

Toohey said in his article that the preference is to use the left over cap to make some room in a tight cap next year. He didn't say how, but i'd think it would be by paying the guys who sign like Brodie Jones, Gamble etc, more money this year and less of a raise next year. I can't think how else to do it.

Yep, frontloading contracts ... seems the best idea, there's not a lot of unsigned talent out there. And if Hasting's contract ramps up next year as much as has been reported we'll need every cent.

So basically you are saying that in 2027 we will be beginning our Penrith years……😊

Well, that would be what Dobson is working towards.
He'll rightly be called a genius if he pulls it off.
What will probably happen is that half those guys won't develop much, some will be poached, and we'll get 4 or 5 firstgraders, and maybe 2 or 3 really good ones.

Yeah I would think guys like Gamble and Jones that have been good this year would get maybe 2 years and they would be like $350k contracts but maybe get an extra $100k each this year leaving them on $250k on cap next year.
Maybe even someone like Kalyn could get his ratchet this year and that would have him on $1.1 instead of $1.3.

And if Cartwright is gone I would assume they would probably upgrade Cant from development to main squad as that would allow using maybe only another 30-40 grand on him and keeps more for the front loading of contracts

2nd row isn’t a worry quality wise so loosing Cartwright is no big deal might actually be a blessing, the next in line for a promotion contract wise is Leaumoana he has been playing strong in Cup and still young, Flegg young

Hi guys, Hull FC fan here. Just wondered what your thoughts are on Jed Cartwright - apparently we are just waiting for visa clearance before he joins us over here. Can't say I've seen much of him at the Knights, more so at Souths, but he doesn't seem to get much game time. He seems to have some size to him, which we desperately need, as we have a very young squad at the moment

He's got some good off loading skills. He's been playing prop in reserve grade because we have good depth at second row, but second row is his best position.

His never going to be an elite forward. His a great squad filler however at 27 he hasn’t properly cracked it he will do okay for Hull FC but he will struggle in the NRL.

Fitzgibbon has gone ok over here for Warrington, runs good lines, solid enough, though not outstanding - is Cartwright similar, or a level down from him?
