Toohey's News

Essential listening for all Knights fans!

AOB discusses how he kept coaching during his Mum’s illness and death, whilst his own job was under threat. Truely inspirational listening!

I was one of the posters on here who was calling on AOB to be sacked, now I understand why the club has stuck with him.

D Saf and Brailey will be with us next season. The club has spoken to Tom Jenkins and Toohey said reports from the Panthers indicate he is coming to Newcastle.

Paul Bryan is expected to play first grade next year.

He's got such an old school front rower's name doesn't he? 😂 Good to hear though, hopefully he can have an injury free year.

The interview with AOB to finish the year had the makings of a great tradition ... shame it only lasted two years! It's great to get his thoughts at the end of the season and fill in a few blanks on behind the scenes stuff.

I don't get the hype over Paul Bryan.
He was pretty good in Flegg last year and for Qld, but I'd say he was outplayed by Keeley and about equal with Bradbury.
It sounds like he trains really well, and he played long minutes in Flegg, and I've noticed over the years that the young props who step up to seniors are the ones with big motors, and not the ones with big impact for short minutes - so he has that.
Anyway, I hope they are right about him.

A big motor is exactly what we want. Especially in those big games we need to wind our starters up (probably Jacob and Leo) and let them rip with line speed and physicality. You can only do that if you’re confident the other guys can play big minutes if you need to sub those starters off 18 or even 15 minutes into the game because of how hard they’ve been going.

30/9
Ron Griffiths was robbed of NRLW coach of the year.
The GF tomorrow will be Ron's last game as NRLW coach.
He will coach men's reserve grade next year.
Tom Jenkins is signed and he joins Tuala, Will Pryce, Mocidreke and Fletcher Myers in the race to find a replacement for Dom.
We have 1 spot left in the top 30 roster.
5 local sides are talking to Peter Mata'utia after his contract with Warrington is expiring and is not being renewed.
O'Brien confided in Kurt Mann over the loss of both their mothers recently and releasing Kurt was a tough call for him.

Ron Griffiths moving to reserve grade coach would give us a good opportunity to appoint a female coach for the NRLW side.
Ron will still be in the same building and working fulltime as a coach, so he could mentor the new coach, so a lack of coaching experience shouldn't be a problem.
We have some very experienced and respected local women's former players like Kylie Hilder and Bec Young. Hilder is the current NSW coach and an assistant at Roosters, and Bec Young represented NSW and Aus at League and Union and played a few games or NRLW for roosters at the end of her career. She is also married to Knights old boy Michael Young.

Deflating start to the day reading that.
Want us to sign Dom Young's brother? :P

Enari and Jenkins are players i'd be confident in having a successful team with. Moceidreki is the dark horse if he can have the biggest pre season of his life and get some footy IQ in his defensive play, as I didn't see a lot of that in the Cup games I saw. Myers is very quick and i'd throw McCarthy in there too cause I know nothing and I liked what I saw of him. Also they are all on cheap coin, type of coin that hopefully lets us re-sign Best and Jsaf!

Ron being full time NSW cup coach is very exciting. I'm very keen to see what he can bring out of the reserve team, which will have him in communication with 1st grade coaches. Congrats to him, he seems like a truly wonderful coach to coached by. Lets hope he comes with x 2 NRLW titles.
Feel for the ladies, but as Billy said, If Blake Green has been mentioned to have helped Upton a lot recently, clearly the girls have access to whoever is at the club and I agree, be a good time to find a female coach, IF they are the right person to do the job. Big shoes to fill.

What’s the low down on Paul Bryan, that was discussed. Sorry if I spelt his name wrong.
He came down from Qld to play SG Ball in 2022. He played alongside Keeley, Bradbury, Myles Martin in a very strong Ball pack and was selected for Qld under 19s to play against Keeley and Bradbury, and went OK in a losing Qld side.
All those forwards stepped up to Flegg and were a good part of taking our Flegg to the grandfinal. Bryan was strong in the GF.
In 2023 Bryan did his MCL in pre-season and had a knee reconstruction. He is supposed to have trained strongly beside Brailey all season and was fit to play at the end of the year, but the club decided to not rush him back, so he's fit and ready for a full pre-season.

U/19's QLD game last yr.

number 10. He's got better foot work then I remember in this game. Fingers crossed all the praise roles into success for the young man. Could be good enough to push for Croker's spot on bench by mid/end of yr. Dare say he is already Croker's size at a younger age, his body type looks like he could bulk and grow more.

Thanks, Billy. For him to get a mention in the podcast, must mean the club sees potential. Hopefully, he's the missing piece in our front-row stocks.
