Toohey's News

I'll commend Obi for building some mental toughness in the group.. we certainly look like a different side in that regard.. our attack stinks though.. but trying to build some mental toughness in this squad surely has to be harder than getting our attack running better so I am optimistic for the year.
I completely agree with you, I think the defensive cohesion and resilience are the two most important things to nail down and fall back on when other things aren't quite firing. Hopefully the attack comes good, but we don't lose these underlying fundamentals.

If you don’t have that solid core to your game, the physicality, toughness and resilience, then the best you can hope for is to be what the Titans are right now. I’d rather grind out an ugly 14-6 win than watch my team give a sparkling attacking performance in a game they lose 40-30.

As deflating as the performances were this year, yes this is what we've been talking about for years now. Even with the rule changes, to be with the elite teams you will still need to be gritty. This year was at least a step in the right direction that way. Whether that holds up to round 1 next year we'll see.

Good call Daniels, that's between the ears had been a more l long term problem than the attack.

Part 2 of Toohey's review
The negatives

1 Poor attack
2 big injury toll
3 Eddie missing the season
4 2 losses to Wests
5 Watson moving on
6 3 months in Qld (he also listed that as a positive)
7 beaten before we play against Roosters and Melbourne
8 edge defence

I actually think Eddy out cost us at least 4-5 games this year. Those periods where Best and Hunt were out were disgraceful from out backline. Another few close ones Eddy could have made a difference too.

Also PSA if you want to read barry's articles and can afford them - pay for them, dont be a cheap ***.
If you cant afford them, most news websites membership overlays are run on javascript and if you were to download a javascript blocker extension on chrome you may or may not be able to read

Couldn’t agree more. I pay for a subscription because I enjoy the Knights content and it supports people like Baz. It infuriates me when people mooch for paid content or enable others to mooch it, which happens regularly on this forum. I don’t do my job for free. I don’t expect others (ie Baz and other journos) do theirs for free either.

There is nothing wrong with putting up a short summary of any article - in your own words.
No one owns the copyright on facts, or even opinions.
The only thing you can own copyright on is copy - or your own words.
To cut and paste his articles would be infringing on his copyright.
To relate the facts in his articles in your own words is not.

Many people probably do subscribe to his content after reading summaries on here, just to get the full context of his comments.

I’m not talking about copyright infringement. What is legal to do is not necessarily what I think is the right thing to do. Frequently, there are posts in here which take all of the informative points out of Herald articles (such as Tooheys News every Saturday, sometimes mere minutes after it’s posted online) and regurgitates them so that people don’t have to bother with subscriptions. If people are subscribing after reading those posts, then credit to them. But more likely is that people (not necessarily forum members) will log on, read a paraphrased version of an article and then not pay for it. And why would they? It surprises me that this forum, being one location of diehard Knights fans and the Herald’s key market for Knights news, enables people to circumvent subscription to the medium which drives much of the discussion on here.

This thread makes it very clear where this comes from, and if people are keen to get the full story, from the horses mouth, they know where to get it.
The information will come out, and we could discuss it without saying where it comes from if we wanted to - and we would want to.
Being very clear about where the good information can be found is as fair as you could be.
Just posting his insights and saying "I heard" would be unfair to him - but not illegal.

No idea what "and we would want to" means. I have no inclination to pass off stories as my own. I don't speak for anyone else. And again, I'm not talking about what is "illegal". I'm very familiar with IP law in my line of work. I'm talking only about what I think is a good thing to do.

For anyone else, including those who ask Toohey questions on Twitter, I encourage a subscription. It's good content and costs a couple of bucks a week.

I’ve considered subscribing many times, but at $187 a year (probably more like $200 in NZD) it’s just too much when all I want to read is the Knights news. And with Knights news your paying that for more like 9 months of the year of content of interest. If I lived in Newcastle there would be a lot more reason to sign up.

Maybe they should consider a “Knights news only” option at a reduced price if they want to capture this market.

In the meantime I’m very thankful to those that post the quick summaries on here … but have no doubt reading the full articles would be a lot better.

You wouldn't be "passing off stories as your own". You would be relating facts and not saying where you heard them, and i can assure you that any facts that appear in articles would be on this forum within an hour - source or no source.

Ok. In that case, I still don’t have any inclination to do that. Irrespective, I’ve said my thoughts on it all and won’t argue any more about it.

Hard to summarise - we need to do better in all areas basically.

I think the recurring theme is that the young guys who got a taste last year - Young, Sasagi, Momoisea, Jones, Crossland, To'a etc - all need to go to another level next year.

To compete for a title you always need to get a lot of production out of your cheaper guys, and in general the cheaper guys will be players on their first top grade contracts. So that all tracks.
