Toohey's News

Couldn't really give a stuff about the 9s and who we send out. Don't risk our highest paid stars, and then don't risk any guys recovering from surgeries and injuries. Send the kids in with an experienced head (Guerra) and go have some fun out there.

The only positive to come out of these tournaments is the prize money. Maybe the statue of Joey could be funded through this if we get up?
I suspect though that whoever wins the prize money will be donated to the bushfire relief which is fine by me.

Re. Tooheys news and second row being a recruitment priority. It's almost like 5/8, there's not a lot of good ones around. Don't really see Kaufusi as being that spectacular, would rather see someone like Kikau, haven't looked at stats so they might change my mind. And, surely we have someone within our rankswho has potential. Talty etc

Todays news
Obrien is keen to extend Watson's contract.
The big recruiting target for 2021 is a "world class" second rower
Best will get a contract upgrade despite being signed till 2022 if he plays as well as hoped.
Kurt Mann had to be needled for his sternum injury most games last year.
Kurt Gdley is training with the 9s squad this morning for the first time.

Re the 2nd rower.
Could it just be a little bit of man management at work there? As in hey you existing guys, we want you to work harder or we will bring in someone better.

Doubt it. They're talking about a world class player which would presumably be someone like Fifita or Graham (as examples). That's no sleight on our current crop, but they haven't shown anything to be considered among the best.

Do you want to know how many world class second rowers are off-contract this year? A whole two.

Tyson Frizell and David Fifita. We are next to no chance of getting either of them as well.

Also says we will start this year with a lot of spare cap space which we will use if a top line second rower comes on the market, or to upgrade Ponga if he decides to extend his contract.

The second rower mentioned by Toohey is Felise Kaufusi, but he has a 2 year option at Melbourne.

In this sport, who knows though. We were no chance of getting Klemmer or Pearce but did. Plenty of players are being released from contracts early. Personally, I'd like to see how Fitz and Barnett go with Obi's structure in place, and with Jones and Momoisea pushing through.

We haven't been going good enough for a long time to turn our nose up at Kafusi if he becomes available. I said a while back I reckon we wait and see how some of these blokes go under O'Brien. They were going nowhere in a hurry under Brown.

Interesting that the blokes in charge think 2nd row is weak. To me it seems fitz is rated, they think barnett is more of a middle player and they either don't like the rest, or they're old like Guerra.

On the other hand huge vote of confidence in best. coach keeps talking him up and not looking at any more centres

If I was Watson I don't know how I would feel about reading this part,

"It has also been acknowledged privately among club officials that tying up Watson to a longer term deal may also strengthen their chances of securing Ponga's re-signing as well given their tight relationship. A win-win."
