Toohey's News

Call me crazy I'd rather have Dom at $500k then best at $900k value for money.
In terms of $$/game and $$/impact, I do think Young wins out in that argument. (No disrespect to Best).

I think Dom has been brilliant this year. Has definitely helped convert a few chances to tries.

It’s kind of easy to think, we should just put somebody fast out on the wing and they’ll do the same. I don’t think it’s that easy though.
And history tells us we weren’t able to replicate that.

Sometimes players just suit a system or style, and I think Dom suits us really well. I think he does himself a disservice going anywhere else.
I think that deal gets done.

Based on vibes not sure if the stats back it up, but it really does seem like the edge defence goes to **** when Best is out.
Agree. I think Best’s week to week defence is top notch.

For sure we lose a little when he’s not there.

In attack - he generally has a brilliant game maybe 1 in 4, with a trademark blockbuster run.

Would love to keep him - but I think there’s other players I’d rather break the bank for - Sharpe/Hopwood.

Out of JSaf, Best, Dom....I don't think we can afford to lose JSaf for the next few years, and Dom is more easily replaceable in our current squad imo than Best, especially in defence.

But obviously money changes the calculation significantly, and $900k might be a bridge too far for this team; the other problem is Bradman's hamstrings.

tl; dr: We can't afford to lose JSaf; if we have to lose one of the other two, it's 6 of one half dozen of the other when weighing up all the issues.

Bradman & Dom are both great players who both matter a lot, but I think Josh Morris sums up why the wider players who've been sorted out first are Lucas, McEwen and Manuleleua:

I could be wrong about this, but I do think we're actually *less* reliant on Dom in attack than we were in 2023, even though he's leading the comp in line breaks. Feel like in 2023 there were a lot more steps & moving parts involved in creating that space out wide, and also we were working towards getting Dom 1-on-1 opportunities rather than putting him away totally untouched down the sideline. Also feel like in 2023 a lot of our breaks were capitalising on the edge forwards not drawing a lot of defensive attention, eg Lachie Fitz running into acres of space or onto easy 1-on-1's because the outside men rushed up so hard on the back 5 players.

This season with Fletcher, Brown & even Sandon threatening to cut back inside, and also shaping to play short to fast, powerful edge forwards running good lines - I don't think it's hyperbole to say there are not the 36 good edge forwards running around right now that you'd need for every team to have two good ones, and we have three - that space kind of seems to be there whenever we want it even off a slow as **** play the ball, like if the defence has committed 3 men to a tackle that seems to be enough of a trigger to hit the go button. And then Dom gets sprung free down the sideline constantly because it's the least bad option for the defence rather than because our entire game plan revolves around setting up a play for him, if that makes sense.

I absolutely think we should keep Dom & I am by no means downplaying that cheat code factor he still has where if you just get him the ball near the line 1-on-1 or even against multiple scrambling defenders, he's probably scoring. But I would bet the arse doesn't fall out of the attack if we lost him this time.

The one player who did a good Dom impression was Fletcher Sharpe because he's not only fast and a tackle breaker, but because he has those instincts, and can nail stuff that other guys like Schiller & Jenkins seem to struggle with eg moving laterally on the ball in the air in those slingshot shapes we like. Dom's the most dangerous winger in the game at that but he's not the only guy who's good at it, and I trust POS to identify other guys who are.

Didn't the Roosters pay Dom $600k?
Is he on that now with Roosters paying some?

Anyway I think he is worth $600k to us.
Probably $700k in the new cap.

Best could be worth $900k in the new cap.
I'd have him at $750k now.
Needs to play more games though.

I mean, just because he is large and black?

Young is an entirely unique profile. His mid-high range speed is elite. His finishing is elite. Its why he's scored more tries per game than any other player since his debut year. Someone fact check that might be bs but its something like that.

There's no replacing Dom. And Nonu wont be free, we'd need to pay him 80% of what we're paying Dom.
No, based on some of his podcast comments. Said he signed Mel's brother at the Dolphins and we got the better brother.

He is on record saying the following on top of that:

Best will have to take a haircut.
Hunt will get a better deal elsewhere.
Gagai and Friz won't be resigned.
We will lose some very good players.

On top of that, I'm sure they see Winter as our right centre going forward and moved him from fullback mid sg ball season. Then they wasted no time playing Nonu outside him in reggies. I reckon it is to get a combo going.

For the record, I don't want to lose Dom again. But I think POS sees an instant replacement for him and won't lose any sleep if we do.

I reckon POS sees Nonu as almost a like for like replacement for Young in another year and won't budge on his current offer.
Nonu will be a great backup for Dom as early as next year, but even though his try scoring record is off the charts, I don't think he'll ever be as good as Dom.
That could come back to bite me - I hope.

Yeah I'm pretty convinced at this stage Cody Hopwood is going to be comparable to Tino Fa'asuamaleaui as a player, and Trey Mooney has been doing a pretty fair Warriors Mitch Barnett impression since Jacob Saifiti got hurt.

You keep those guys, J Saf on top of them, Brown, Sharpe, Ponga, Lucas, and one out of McEwen and Manuleleua, I reckon you've got a core of players who'll allow us to be really dangerous with okay/inexperienced outside backs, as opposed to being extremely reliant on elite outside backs.

I think every contract has ratches in it, 4 year deal at $600k sounds on par to me with ratchets.

Young is currently on our cap for $200k

He was on $450k at the Roosters and they are chipping in $250k

Really, find it hard to believe Dom left the Knights to be paid only $450k.

He would’ve already been paid his salary from the chooks from Nov - May before he came to us so I’d say you can add at least $200k onto that. The split would’ve been what was remaining on the contract

I thought so too, but according to the Daily Telegraph, an article from 2025

“He is on about $450,000 this year with the number growing to $500,000 for the remaining two years of his deal”
