Toohey's News

Plus everyone roots for those sorts of teams who come hot the last month or so of the season.

Eels 2009 casually knocking off multiple top four teams and the Cowboys running riot over teams off the back of Taumololo. Who wasn’t a bandwagoner as unlikely as them winning the GF was?

Kevin Walters says Fletcher Sharpe is in the mix for the Kangaroos World Cup squad.

Negotiation talks around Bradman Best and Dom Young are both at a stalemate. Dom’s manager says the club knows what it’ll take, and that they aren’t too far apart, but more is needed. Toohey says club officials are quietly confident of locking down Best, Young and Jacob Saifiti but remains to be seen whether that wlll happen prior to them becoming free agents for 2028 in November.

Toohey says it's panic stations every time Sandon Smith is isolated in defence and that’s sure to be a tactic for opposing teams come finals time.

Asu Kepaoa returns in NSW Cup this week after his suspension. Parr says there’s been no thought to getting rid of him.

I don't think Sharpe ever made any State sides in juniors.
That kid who is stuck in reserve grade at Canberra was always ahead of him in the eyes of selectors.
Crazy how that guy didn't crack on - he looked firstgrade ready at 18.
Chevy Stewart? Yeah goes to show how hard it can be to pick these things. As I understand it our club was high on Fletcher internally but didn't quite see *this* coming. There's a level of instinct to Sharpe's game, an instinctive ability to read and react, that really really shines at first grade level. Whereas other guys totally dominate juniors and NSW Cup but hit the top grade and that same special something isn't quite there.

Sharpe also had a late growth spurt. He was a pretty small guy and played a year or two above his age, which made him look even smaller in comparison.
He's 6'2" and almost 90kg now, but I still think 5'9" and under 70kg because that's about where I thought he'd finish up. He's always had the instincts. I remember posting about how everyone who made a linebreak in teams he was in would look around for a support runner, and Sharpe was always jogging along beside them, ready to take off when they passed him the ball. No one knew how he got there, but he was always there.

Chevy Stewart had just about the best game for NSW under 19s ever and was picked for firstgrade soon after - but I see he's only had 5 games of firstgrade still. Looks like he hasn't grown since he was 16.

Spot on.

As well as his speed, instincts and ability it's how he has taken to the physicality of the NRL that has really surprised me.

He's a mouth piece Dom's agent. IF we resign him I think it should be the last time they deal with him, so yeah as he said sign Dom for 4 years, with ratchets and then never deal with the agent again, completely un trustworthy. Tell Dom to get someone knew.

As ppl have said above. The money needs to be there to up Sharps contract, eventually Manulelueas as well. A couple juniors like Hagan and Nonu need resigning by 28 and I'd personally need to see an extension for Will Bates hopefully very soon.

Dom is essential for our attack for sure and you'd love to have him for a few more years with what is building. But it needs to work for the club as well.

I think the two contracts we need to be planning for long term are Sharpe and Hopwood. I'm sure Pos is.

Hopwood’s extension as well, as he is a free agent come 1 Nov 2027.

I reckon POS sees Nonu as almost a like for like replacement for Young in another year and won't budge on his current offer.
I mean, just because he is large and black?

Young is an entirely unique profile. His mid-high range speed is elite. His finishing is elite. Its why he's scored more tries per game than any other player since his debut year. Someone fact check that might be bs but its something like that.

There's no replacing Dom. And Nonu wont be free, we'd need to pay him 80% of what we're paying Dom.
