Toohey's News

I sat with my adult son behind Cody Hopwood, after a SG Ball game at Central this year, while he was watching the Flegg game. He is a very impressive young man who speaks very well, appears educated and displays modesty. The fact he was Ball captain this year, even though playing a year up, is a clear indication of how he is viewed by the club.

I don’t like putting wraps on young players, however this young fella has all the attributes to go along way in the game. He is by far our best prospect, as reinforced by his inclusion in top 30 at only 18 years of age.
I love hearing this

Gardiner says he is not retiring next year, despite the rumours. Says he is setting up junior hubs in upper Hunter, central coast, and north coast - building a $5mill grandstand at the CoE - building a junior residence in Lambton and that will keep him busy.

On the recruitment front
Says we will have 7 positions to fill if DSaf leaves - no mention of Hetherington or Brailey - but you would assume we have 9 spots if they go.
Says O'Sullivan won't bring his son here.
Says Seb Sua will replace Saifiti in the top 30
Says Cody Hopwood joins the top 30
Says Tom Cant is tipped join the top 30 after he knocked back offers from several clubs
Says Croker and Jones will be offered contracts soon and maybe Tuala
Says Maps needs to play well for the rest of the season to get an offer

Also says Will Pryce will have to have a great game V Manly to keep his spot because Gamble is set to return V Brisbane.

So 5-6 positions potentially covered.

I'm surprised there's no more talks on Hastings future given I thought he was on thin ice

Thought Su’a was already signed for next season, happy with Croker and Jones (B) to be signed, Hopwood sounds like a future biggy and think Cant might be playing a lot of Cup, sorry don’t rate him highly.
Can understand Hastings no talk, Cogger is not it and no one jumps up and says pick me, at the moment he is the best we have maybe another year might see Liam Sutton come on.

Literally no one to replace him with in 2025 unless you enjoy what Cogger offers.
He can negotiate with anyone for 2026 in about 3 months time yet the Knights don't seem in a rush to extend him...

Yeah already has a top 30 spot.

Apparently Brisbane want him to replace Reynolds . Either way I think he will be locked up pretty soon
New NRL team (presumably and hopefully Perth ... with or without the Bears name and baggage) also set to kickoff in about 2027. There'd have to be a lure for players to join a new club, being an inaugural part of the history of a club.

There's about to be more clubs over the next 10yrs, feeding on whatever players become available.

Hetherington is going nowhere and will earn 550k+ next season.
Tom Cant has signed a 2 year top 30 deal.
Cody Hopwood has agreed to a 4 year deal till the end of season 2028. Flegg winger Sosia Latu is the only other player signed till the end of 2028.
60 year old Michael Hagan has stepped down from his Australian assistant coach job. He has been replaced by another former Knights half - not that one - Justin Holbrook.
