Why doesn’t it seem like a good idea?A few guys have managed to play NRL with type 1 diabetes - that Brett Stewart guy for Manly was a top player for a decade - but it doesn't seem like a good idea.

Hypoglycemia. Low blood sugar levels when playing causes all sorts of issues. All things that are treatable fairly quickly but being too low obviously could lead to seizures, falling unconscious. Not good on a footy field. Why doesn’t it seem like a good idea?
In the past, type 1 diabetics had a lot of issues with stabilising their insulin levels which leads to a lot of longterm health problems - mostly things like tissue repair - so recovery from injuries would be affected. Why doesn’t it seem like a good idea?
I think that could be managed - it's just a matter of eating enough before the game to get you through and taking the right amount of insulin to get you through.Hypoglycemia. Definitely. All the tech now you could have all your levels read on the go.I think that could be managed - it's just a matter of eating enough before the game to get you through and taking the right amount of insulin to get you through.
The problem would be keeping your levels good when you need to recover for days at a time.

They have made great breakthroughs in recent years with things called insulin pumps, letting them lead a pretty normal life, but I don't know if you could play rugby league with an insulin pump. You could probably play any non contact sport.
In the past, type 1 diabetics have had a 10 year shorter life expectancy than the general population, mostly due to them being less able to recover from disease and injuries, but new claims are that insulin pumps - which constantly monitor insulin levels and release insulin as soon as you need it - mean they can avoid all those problems.
In short - getting beat up every week seems like a bad idea for guys who might not recover quickly.
Sorry guys, loaded question.I think that could be managed - it's just a matter of eating enough before the game to get you through and taking the right amount of insulin to get you through.

I'd hope the club hasn't put a line through his name based on his medical background. Clearly some good/great players have had a great career with diabetes. My old man takes so many pills and injects daily and I've only ever seen him shake like a tree in the wind if low. Usually plenty of warning signs.Sorry guys, loaded question.
Been dealing for 32 years, I know more than anyone ever will.
Just don’t like to see anyone being dismissed based on these grounds. I’ve dealt with “friends” (who have only heard of my worst moments, which are very rare), treating me like a time bomb. Pretty much ruined any confidence I could have.
Like to think I got something to offer.
Can hit within minutes despite doing everything right. That’s the worst thing people don’t understand. It’s not just taking you medication, it is a constant calculation looking 3-4 hours in advance.I'd hope the club hasn't put a line through his name based on his medical background. He’s a generation younger than me. The science has changed significantly in the last 15 years, it’s more work, but better results, so I hope he has had full benefit of that.Huth has managed well for a long time and should be able to live with it while young.
My worry would be how much it knocks him around for the rest of his life - whether he ages faster than he needs to.
He’s had it from 16’s til now and they kept him on. I’d say they just don’t think he’s good enough after seeing him play 6 months of reservesHe’s a generation younger than me. I haven’t questioned the club’s integrity. He

I'll be disappointed if he's the best we can get, but we need to fill up the roster and spend the salary cap - so we might need to settle for him - as long as we don't give him a multi year deal.Anyone here thinking Milford ?
Just paper work, still in courts, prob can be waterd down to a suspension, the nrl can be persuaded.Won't be registered by NRL until 2023 at earliest
NopeAnyone here thinking Milford ?
