The NBA Thread

I like the Heat's starting 5, not sure if they can play every minute of the season though.
The big one will be Powell. Then other players like Jovic who have been stashed away at times and gotten inconsistent play time should get more minutes making their contracts a bargain.

Tough life being an NBA team and managing difficult aprons. But did not expect contending teams to conclude rookie contracts are not needed. Even if maybe latter part of draft is weak?

CLE: Shaved $2.9M off by trading away #29. Now $21.1M under the tax, $29.1M under first apron and $42.1M under second apron (before re-signing James Harden – assuming he opts out)

DEN: Shaved $3.1M off by trading away #26. Now $3.2M under first apron and $16.2M under second apron (factoring in a Jonas Valanciunas waiver)

NYK: Shaved $3.3M off by trading away #24 and ending with no first-round pick. Now $3.5M under first apron and $16.5M under second apron

Austin Reaves as expected, re-signs. Interesting with the player option...If the cap goes up enough he can opt out of the last year and get more money on another max contract. Even if he ends up as a bad contract, See trae young lol. Collectively GM's suddenly decided to give the players all the leverage again. After crying about player empowerment.

Weird one on Ball...Kinda wasn't sure if a team would do it but here we are

Wolves' size is the main reason they've succeeded in the post season and they've traded it all away. And Lamelo sometimes having defensive issues careless/going MIA/not caring...concern. On the flip side you do have someone who can take shots when the good teams eventually do double Ant, and lighten the load for him. It's something different...

Wolves do 'address' the PG position. Certainly better than relying on Conley or DDV when he comes back. And sometimes Finch treats Ant like a PG, every 12th to 15th game, he proves it, moves the ball and runs sets.

Do give the edge to Charlotte for this trade. Who knows when/if Ball plays 70+ games again lol. Think with Ball shooting less and playing less minutes helped Charlotte this season, build the team around their other guys, they own their firsts, pick swaps (a good one from Dallas from memory)...worry about those headaches when they happen.

It could be an okay fit for the Wolves, Ball with better players...we'll see.

Yeah when the other team has the guy in the building, and he's obviously their best/most influential player by both eye test and analytics, and they're like "we've gotta move this guy"... that would have to give you pause surely.

Timberwolves are still playing catchup from the original sin of overpaying for Rudy though. This is why you give yourself time and see what you need before guessing in advance while your superstar is still in his early 20's. All along they needed another ball handler/shot creator AND that physical frontcourt, and they've trapped themselves in a situation where there probably isn't a way for them to get both. There's another timeline where they were more patient, they have good front court players in depth (Kessler was one of the guys traded for Rudy, lmao) rather than blowing everything on Rudy who's obviously good but is literally totally unplayable in certain matchups, and their team is Ant with whatever star or fringe all star level ball handler they could have gotten, PLUS JMc, Reid, maybe KAT still there, etc etc etc.

Having to accept the Josh Green dump as part of it, he's borderline unplayable, yuck. It's either Dosunmu, their second round pick or whoever they find on the street at the 3 spot. Don't love that. This team literally has four players on it and I'm not sure which free agency move helps them much with that.

Still waiting for the Lakers to do something. Personally, I think they should trade LeBron to GWS so they can run an "Expendables" season with Dramond, Steph and LeBron. Certainly, neither roster is a championship roster, so they should roll the dice on their aging superstars and/or move on.

Small sample size but I imagine they were uninspired from his play in ‘games that matter’. The Play In game against Miami. Where Ball was "heroic". But it was his lack of defense being 6'7 that Miami targeted. His turnovers and fouls that almost cost them the game too.

Also Ball did injure Adebayo on a dirty play. Creating an advantage. Then couldn't handle Suggs the next game.

LeBron is a UFA in less than a week and the talk is the communication has been minimal. A lot can change from now and then. But if they both move on and let him do whatever he wants as a FA then fair game.

Be interesting to see what happens with Bronny if that's the case, really improved over the course of the season. Not sure if he's an NBA quality 2nd string pt guard, but certainly improved from where he was.

Bronny will either follow him or not be in the NBA when/if he retires. No one’s dumb enough to be taking him on or giving him a sniff close to what his rookie contract was lol.

The GSW talk (though not new) is certainly interesting. I have no idea how they can fit both Bron and AD and I guess that includes what kind of one year deal Steph takes again, with Draymond opting out they’d be able to come to some sort of agreement.

The GWS expendables would at least be an entertaining storyline. I started supporting the Lakers because of Lebron now I actually want the team to move on.

Meantime there's two Australians at the Bulls in Giddey and Olbrich so I'll probably mostly follow them and the other smattering of Aussies around the league. Did see few months ago that there were suggestions that the Lakers might be interested in Matisse in free agency.

Pretty much like Young just no value and market, but really not sure if it’s the right team and system with who they have. Unsurprisingly it’s just a match salaries and length type of deal with a potential rotational piece.

I’m not sure what the Warriors will have to attach to get a deal done to get AD which means shipping off Butler but Porzingis getting $20m with his injuries probably doesn’t help them either. I don’t believe they can use their MLE on LeBron either
