Holy moses, a nine wicket win chasing down that many! Pretty incredible effort from India. :applause:

Yeah, Take nothing away from them they were the better team but that Pitch was made for batting practice, Nothing in it for the bowlers at all...

Plus Rohit Sharma was out, Knicked the ball through to the keeper clear sound/edge and given not out...He went on to smash another 60 or so of just 30 balls..

Very entertaining match, Australia still performed very well....

This will be a very good series...Currently 1-1

Shocking preparation for an ashes series. None of the players involved for Australia will benefit from these one day games for the test series coming up imo.

Australia turn the tables tonight and this time they chase down 300+ to win the game...They now lead the 7 match series 2-1

India - 9/303

Dhoni - 139* Not Out

Kholi - 68

Johnson - 4/46

Australia - 6/304

Voges - 76* Not Out

Faulkner - 64* Not Out

Australia Test opener David Warner continued his return to form ahead of next month's Ashes series with a typical swashbuckling century to lift NSW to a seven-wicket win over Victoria in the one-day cup on Sunday.

Warner and Peter Nevill put on a 202-run opening stand - a record for any wicket in this season's competition - as NSW mowed down Victoria's imposing tally of 8-311 with four overs to spare.

Warner made the most of North Sydney Oval's small boundaries, cracking 16 fours and five sixes in racing to 138 off 111 deliveries, before being trapped lbw by Test teammate Peter Siddle.

The left-hander opened the season with scores of 4, 0 and 17, before finding his straps with a big-hitting 139 against Queensland on Thursday.Warner's opening partner Nevill contributed an intelligent 53, while Steve Smith rounded out the match in style with a rapid unbeaten 65.

Earlier, Cameron White again pushed his claims for national selection, scoring a fifth half-century in as many innings.

White led the charge as the Bushrangers cracked a remarkable 14 sixes with White clearing the fence five times in scoring 50, before being caught on the boundary as his season tally reached 345 runs at an average of 86.

The powerful Victorian was particularly harsh on Nathan Lyon with his first six overs costing 43 runs, before the Australian off-spinner eventually finished with 0 for 68 off nine overs.

Victoria wicketkeeper and captain Matthew Wade also continued his bright start to the season with an impressive 85 off 81 deliveries, while David Hussey contributed a sparkling 71 off 52 as the run-rate increased dramatically late in the innings.

Opening bowler Josh Hazlewood defied the onslaught to collect 4-57 off his 10 overs, while Sean Abbott claimed 3-61.The result guarantees NSW a top three finish and a chance to play-off for next Sunday's final.

Quick-fire knock from James Faulkner helps Australia successfully chase 304 against India in Mohali

  • JOE BARTON

  • OCTOBER 20, 2013 6:35AM

AUSTRALIA'S cricketers have exacted revenge for Wednesday's stunning loss to India by inflicting a record-breaking run chase of their own to win the third one-day match in Mohali.

Just three days after India produced the second-greatest chase of alltime, Australia produced a miracle win when faced with a similarly mountainous task.

Led by James Faulkner's incredible 64 off 29 balls, Australia ran down India's target of 304 with three balls and four wickets to spare - easily their biggest successful chase on Indian soil.

The match turned on its head in the 48th over when Faulkner thumped 30 runs, including four enormous sixes, off a despondent Ishant Sharma (1-63).

Needing nine off the final over, the Tasmanian all-rounder sealed the comeback with his sixth six of a ridiculous innings.

Faulkner's heroics would not have been possible without the rebuilding efforts of Adam Voges (76 n.o.) and George Bailey (43) and completely overshadowed MS Dhoni's majestic 139 n.o. in India's innings.

Dhoni offered just one chance - a skied catch when on 105 in the second last over, which was spilled by the normally safe hands of Bailey.

Despite there being just 11 deliveries remaining, Dhoni managed to add 34 runs following the drop, passing 7500 one day runs in the process. The final 10 overs were a whirlwind of boundary-clearing helicopter shots, smashes through cover and others which only a handful of world cricketers could conjure.

He calculated his innings meticulously, playing within himself as he helped India recover from a Mitchell Johnson-inspired collapse. But once Dhoni decided to up the tempo, the runs flowed freely - finishing with 12 boundaries and five sixes - as he added 76 with Ravi Ashwin and 72 with Virat Kohli .

On two occasions Johnson (4-46) threatened to take the match away from the home side - and nearly became the sixth Australian to take an ODI hattrick.

The 31-year-old rattled Suresh Raina with his pace and bounce, having him caught by Shane Watson at first slip, before removing hometown favourite Yuvraj Singh the following delivery.

Johnson couldn't deliver on his hat-trick delivery but he returned to claim the scalps of Ravindra Jadeja (2) and Ashwin.Australia's chase started promisingly, with Aaron Finch (39) and Phil Hughes (22) posting their third-straight 50-run opening stand.

But when Hughes was caught behind off Vinay Kumar to make the score 1-68 two wickets followed soon after and the chase became ever more imposing.Hughes' exit was followed soon after by dubious back-to-back LBWs to remove Finch and Shane Watson (11) as Australia slumped to 3-88.

Bailey and Adam Voges combined for the biggest partnership of the match, putting on 83 runs, but the departure of the skipper brought the needless runout of Glenn Maxwell (3).

When Maxwell was run out in Jaipur it was entirely his own doing - but on this occasion he was justifiably frustrated by Voges' decision to change his call mid-pitch and sent the power-hitting allrounder back to the pavilion.

Brad Haddin (24 off 16) and Voges added 39 in quick time, but when the wicketkeeper was caught in the deep off Bhuvneshwar Kumar Australia's unlikely charge looked shot.

Faulkner had other ideas and the Australians now lead the seven-match series 2-1.

CRICKET legend Richie Benaud is in hospital after the car he was driving was reportedly involved in a collision in Sydney on Wednesday.

The 83-year-old was the only occupant of a car that mounted a nature strip and hit a brick wall in Coogee, Nine News reports.

He suffered chest and shoulder injuries and is expected to be spend some time in hospital as he recovers. He is reportedly in good spirits.

"No one else was injured, and I was more worried about the car than myself," he said in a statement released by Channel Nine.

He's a very destructive player. You would think he could get some more runs in tests seeing as though there is much more conventional, aggressive fielding positions.

Glad to read Richie wasn't badly hurt. The slow motion replay doesn't really show how fast the car was traveling.

FORMER Test batsman Marcus North has been granted leave by Western Australia from the Sheffield Shield match against Queensland after his brother was killed in an accident on Friday.

The 34-year-old North found out about the death his older brother Lucas shortly after being dismissed during WA's first innings on day one at the WACA Ground.

Lucas North, 40, was killed when attempting to pour petrol into his broken down car on Perth's Mitchell Freeway when he was struck by a truck.

Queensland have agreed to allow WA to replace North for the final three days of the clash at the WACA, and Luke Towers will take his place in the side.

Players will wear black armbands and the flags on top of the scoreboard will be lowered as a mark of respect to the North family.

Michael Clarke, Michael Hussey named in ICC's Test team of the year

AUSTRALIA'S difficult 2013 has been reflected by the fact that just one current player has been named in the International Cricket Council's Test and one-day teams of the year.

HARD-HITTING wicketkeeper-batsman Adam Gilchrist will become the 19th Australian to be inducted into the International Cricket Council Hall of Fame later this week.

Gilchrist will join former Pakistan captain Waqar Younus as the 70th and 71st male members to be honoured by the ICC.

A state player for Western Australia, Gilchrist will be honoured during the tea interval of the third Ashes Test match at the WACA on Friday.

Gilchrist revolutionised the wicketkeeper-batsman role, often changing the course of a game with his quickfire runs coming in down the order.

He represented Australia in 96 Tests in a career that spanned 12 years.

The NSW-raised player scored 5,570 Test runs and claimed 416 dismissals behind the stumps, including 379 catches and 37 stumpings.

He also captained the Test team on six occasions.

Gilchrist scored 17 Test centuries and 26 half-centuries, while his best performance with the bat came against South Africa in Johannesburg in 2002 when he scored 204 not out.

He also enjoyed a strong one day record, amassing 9,619 ODI runs and 472 dismissals in 287 games.

Gilchrist said of the induction: "I am delighted to be inducted into the ICC Cricket Hall of Fame and to be doing it in front of my home crowd on the first day of the third Test will be a very special occasion for me and my family.

"I'm looking forward to the day and would like to thank all the living Hall of Famers and voting academy who nominated and voted for me to join them.''

Recent Australian inductees include Glenn McGrath and Shane Warne.

Hughes is killing it at the moment. Just scored a ton today and averaging 68 this season. I hope the Australian selectors don't screw him up, because I still believe he will be the only genuine superstar batsman out of the current crop of generation next for us. In 10 years time, we should be saying Hughes is one of our greatest ever.

Deadly political violence threatens 2014 World Cup in Bangladesh

BANGLADESH'S cricket chief has said that next year's Twenty20 World Cup is threatened by the country's deadly political violence, and there may only be weeks to save the tournament.

The 16-team competition, due to take place between March 16 and April 6, should be the biggest sporting event ever staged by Bangladesh.

But the country has been gripped by violent protests in recent weeks, with opposition supporters insisting that Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina stand aside before elections due next month.

More than 74 people have been killed since late October.

"If this situation prevails, then any big tournament or participation of any big country will be under threat," Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB) president Nazmul Hassan told reporters late Monday.

"This must end in January and preferably in December.

The political violence has affected almost every city, including the three host venues for the T20 tournament - the capital Dhaka, Chittagong and Sylhet.

A team of International Cricket Council (ICC) inspectors declared last week they were "happy" with security arrangements but said they would continue to monitor the situation.

However, the dangers posed to teams was underlined at the weekend when a small bomb exploded outside the West Indies' Under-19 team's hotel in the port city of Chittagong, prompting them to cut short their tour.

Bangladesh is also due to host a tour by Sri Lanka in January before then staging the Asia Cup, a 50-over tournament starting in February which also features India, Pakistan and Sri Lanka.

"The quicker this political situation improves the better because the Sri Lanka tour is in January and then we have the Asia Cup.

"It needs to be resolved before that," said Hassan, who is a ruling party lawmaker.

In Sri Lanka, cricket authorities said they were closely monitoring developments.

"We are doing an independent security review," Sri Lanka Cricket secretary Nishantha Ranatunga told AFP.

"Once we have a report, we will take a call on whether to go ahead or not."We are in talks with the Bangladesh board. We have to be very careful because of the every bad experience we had (in Pakistan) before."

245924-.jpg

Bangladeshi Islamist activists watch as materiel burns in a street during clashes with police in Bogra, some 120km north of Dhaka on March 3, 2013.

Seven Sri Lankan players and their assistant coach suffered injuries in March 2009 when a dozen gunmen opened fire on their bus in Lahore.

Sri Lanka are scheduled to play two Tests, two one-day games and two T20 matches starting January 27 in Bangladesh.

An ICC spokesman told AFP on Monday that it was "actively monitoring" the situation in Bangladesh, stressing that it gave the highest priority to the safety of all participants in ICC events.

FICA, the umbrella body for players' associations from around the cricketing world, said it was seeking advice from its independent security adviser.

"We will continue to monitor the threat levels between now and the start of the tournament and will keep players informed as to the situation," said FICA executive chairman Paul Marsh.

"As is always the case with security issues, we will ensure that the safety of our players is paramount in our decision-making. There is, however more than three months until the event starts and as such we do not need to be making any decisions at this time."

A spokesman for Cricket Australia said the board would seek its own government's advice on the security situation, but no decision on whether to go to Bangladesh would be made until much nearer the time.

Australia and the West Indies both refused to play in Sri Lanka during the 1996 50-over World Cup after a bomb went off in Colombo, killing 91 people, shortly before the tournament began.

New Zealand refused to play in Kenya during the 2003 World Cup, a few months after a deadly bomb attack in Mombasa.

Pakistan has not hosted any international matches since the attack on the Sri Lankan team in 2009.

South Africa's Vernon Philander takes over at the top of ICC Test bowler rankings

SOUTH Africa paceman Vernon Philander has ended compatriot Dale Steyn's four-year reign as the world's top-ranked bowler.

Philander took top spot in the latest ICC Rankings after outshining Steyn in the dramatic drawn first Test against India in Johannesburg where South Africa fell just short of chasing down a world record run chase.

The 28-year-old claimed seven wickets in the match while Steyn, who had taken over from Sri Lanka off-spinner Muttiah Muralidaran as the world's top bowler in July 2009, managed just one.

While the pair may be remembered for their unpopular decision to abandon the run chase in the closing overs, Philander said he is happy with his position as the No. 1 ranked Test bowler.

"It is an honour to have been bowling alongside a champion like Dale," he said."It's been a great couple of years for our squad, and I have been fortunate enough to contribute to our success on the field.

"What has been the most pleasing, though, for us has been the all-round contribution from everyone in the squad that has been the main reason for our success over the last few years.

"Needless to say, it is always easier to be at the top of your game and successful when you are part of a winning team.

"Dale has been a tireless workhorse for us and continues to consistently put in quality performances for our team, it is no wonder that he was at the top of the bowling ranking for so long."

Ahead of the Boxing Day Ashes Test, Australia's highest ranked bowlers are Ryan Harris and Peter Siddle in fifth and sixth, with Ashes series star Mitchell Johnson next best down in 13th, Australian bowling coach Craig McDermott hailing our pace attack the best in world cricket.

Stuart Broad is England's best-ranked Test bowler in ninth.

South Africa also has a stranglehold on the batting rankings, AB de Villiers, who made a century in Johannesburg, consolidated his No. 1 spot, with Australian captain Michael Clarke the only Ashes player inside the top 10.

In a couple of months against the South African's in South Africa will be a true indication of how far we have come. 2 best bowlers and 2 best batters in the world. Not to mention the young wicketkeeper (yet to play tests) who got 3 ODI centuries in a row this month. Looking at his stats, he looks Gilchrist-like. Averages 52 in FC cricket at a strike rate of 85.43.

Jacques Kallis to quit Test cricket after Boxing Day clash with India to focus on 2015 World Cup

SOUTH African allrounder Jacques Kallis has announced he will quit Test cricket after the Boxing Day match against India but plans to play on until the 2015 World Cup in Australia and New Zealand.

Kallis is one of the all-time great allrounders with 44 Test hundreds from 165 matches at an average of 55.12 and 292 wickets at 32.53.

But he turned 38 in October and will now miss the three-Test series against Australia in February and March.

He said in a statement: "It's been an honour and a privilege to have been part of the South African Test team since making my debut 18 years ago.

"I have enjoyed every moment out in the middle but I just feel that the time is right to hang up my Test whites

"It wasn't an easy decision, with Australia around the corner and the success this team is enjoying, but I feel the time is right. I don't see it as goodbye, I still have a lot of hunger to push South Africa to that World Cup in 2015 if I am fit and performing.

"The last two years specifically have been a memorable journey with an exceptional group of cricketers.

"I am fortunate enough to have ended my Test career amongst a group of talented cricketers but more importantly, friends whom I will cherish for years to come."

Kallis has scored 13,174 runs since making his Test debut ijn Durban against England in 1995.

He is the fourth highest run-scorer behind Sachin Tendulkar, Ricky Ponting and Rahul Dravid, all of whom have retired inside the past two years.

NEW Zealand batsman Corey Anderson has smashed his way to the fastest one-day international hundred, taking just 36 balls to reach his century against West Indies.

Left-hander Anderson, 23, smashed his 12th six of his innings off spinner Nikita Miller in the 18th over at the small Queenstown ground on Wednesday to reach three figures

.He eclipsed Pakistani Shahid Afridi's previous record of 37 balls, set against Sri Lanka in Nairobi in 1996.

Anderson finished unbeaten on 131, having smashed 14 sixes as New Zealand posted a mammoth 4-283.In reply, West Indies could only muster 5-124, falling an incredible 159 runs short in the rainshortened match.

Anderson was supported by Jesse Ryder, whose 104 was itself the sixth fastest ton in ODIs, in his second match since the well-documented problems he suffered at the start of 2013.

The pair, who put on 191 for the fourth wicket, came together at 3-84 in the seventh over, with New Zealand already in control of a match which looked for a long time like it would not start because of persistent rain.

The assault proper started in the 12th over as the pair combined to take 19 off Jason Holder, but it got worse from there.

Anderson smashed four sixes in the next over, off Sunil Narine, then repeated the trick two overs later off Ravi Rampaul.

At that stage Anderson had hit 10 sixes in the space of 16 deliveries faced and his side had moved on to 194 for three.

At the other end Ryder was prepared to deal in relatively pedestrian fours, but he put the cherry on the tourists' worst moment as he swept the last ball of that Miller over - which cost 27 runs - over the boundary.

Among some ugly bowling figures, Rampaul stood out for the wrong reasons as his three overs cost 64 runs.ICC rules state that to constitute a match, a minimum of 20 overs have to be bowled at the side batting second.

The match was reduced to 21 overs each after rain delayed the start.

The West Indies lead the five-match series 1-0 after a two-wicket win at Eden Park on Boxing Day. The second match in Napier was rained off.
