Tevita Pangai Jnr

I just watched Hit or Miss Round 2 on the NRL website. They were discussing TPJs game against the cowboys last week, when Michael Chammas mentioned that Newcastle had kept some salary cap space aside to go back after him again next year. I know the club has basically said that the days of the big name signings are over. As far as I know, Jamie Buhrer, Hymel Hunt and Skd are off contract. Nathan Ross has a year to go, but that is in question. I still think if TPJ leaves Brisbane, it will be to go to Souths. What does everyone think?

Agree it is probably a bit of a long shot....BUT - if we put together a solid season with the roster we have this year, I think he would be more inclined to consider us more seriously that he had when we didn't have Klemmer, Gavet and others on our books, no matter what sort of $$$ we may have offered.

I think Bennett/Souths is still the more likely scenario for him but I still wouldn't mind keeping them honest and bumping up his asking price so that Souths have some competition for his signature and are paying realistic money for him.

I think Gardner has said money wise we are pretty tied up and I think that's a fair comment at the moment. Hence the decision of recruiting big names is done for the time being.
The only real average contract we have is Ross for 700k in 2019 and 2020 and even if that is off the books there are other players (as mentioned by Gardner going as far back as last year) that they may want to upgrade. The team is already planning on keeping Ramien and he could double his value at the end of the year if he played well. Outside of Pearce and Ponga our backline is actually reasonably cheap lol.
Sure we have some players coming off the books but for 2020 I don't think we'd have the room to make a competitive offer. Not to mention the various other juggling acts that get talked about.

In regards to where he will go Gaigai I think comes off contract at the end of this year? amongst other things. They have the room.

Whoever they replace Cronk with probably won't be on 1.5m or whatever it is, even if they get someone on half ish of him theyll probably make it work juggling some of the smaller contracts.

I reckon if they had a chance they’d offload Guerra now too, he’s on the bench and on around $650-$675 this year and next. With Jones and Fermor coming through as well he’s looking surplus to requirements. If we could offload Guerra & Ross we’re in the position to buy another good player worth around 800K depending on how much freight we’d have to carry for both.

Was his contract backloaded? Guerra is on 1.6m, 3 year deal. Surely there's no way he would take 250-400k in that first year? Yes I do agree from his age he will probably want to get one last decent payday which probably won't be Newcastle. I can't see anyone being offloaded early and he has a purpose at the moment. Sure if he gets a 3 year deal elsewhere starting 2020 we may have no hesitations releasing him from that final year but that's all a hypothetical.

I'd like to see Pangai play consistently good and have a reasonably injury free season before the Knights offer him big money again.
Especially if we have to let other players go for him.

Offload Guerra? Another Jaybro clanger lol.

I would like TPJ here but when Daniel and Jacob (who should be really hungry) come back with Klem , Gavet , Glasby and Ese,ese im not sure we will need him . if Daniel and Jacob play well and stay injury free and the others too , we will have a very good pack as it is .
I think that on his best days Jacob is at least as good as Daniel but so far they have been few and far between .Hopefully he will come back wanting to hurt people (legally) but be a bit angry because 1 he got knocked out , 2 he also broke a leg 3 it cost him $25,000 4 he now has a very hard slog to get a look in in first grade .
He should come back with a bit of spark . I also wouldn't mind TPJ here too though .

I remember going to under 16s games where TPJ and Sione were playing, and their various relatives filled half the grandstand.
TPJ in particular has a massive family in Newcastle - when he came off he'd have 10 or 15 kids from ages 6 and up around him, and as many adults waving from the stands.
He implied when he came to talk to the Knights last year that he wasn't that interested in talking to the Knights, but couldn't pass up a paid trip "home".
He has a lot of roots here.

Most deals have slight increments thats why i said possibly $675

Hahah What other clangers?? Always happen to admit when I'm wrong unlike most people here

Why is it such a shock that a 31 year old forward who's now playing on the bench and that's on $650K plus would be offloaded??

Please enlighten me since I'm apparently full of clangers
