State of Origin 1, 2023

They should look a lot more fluent with those connections though, they were so disjointed! These NSW players have also been together for a few years now, too.
Better, more athletic players. Faster line speed. Those complex Penrith structures become a lot harder and aren’t really what Origin is about.

The best Origin players tend to be instinctive, individually brilliant players, and/or supreme athletes. Inglis, Thurston, Joey, Daley, etc. In recent years the standouts have been Munster, Tedesco, Latrell, Turbo, Grant and, yes, Ponga. Get the right handful of those guys and fill out the team with mean bastards, and selfless players like To’o who do the work of two players.

To’o, Frizell, Martin and Koroisau all had passable to very good games. I also thought Luai had one of his better origin games with a couple of nice touches even though it hurt my eyes with them going left all the time. It’s pure negligence we didn’t once give the ball to turbo/fox in space all game.

Results from 2020-now:

Qld 18-14
NSW 34-10
Qld 20-14
NSW 50-6
NSW 26-0
Qld 20-18
Qld 16-10
NSW 44-12
Qld 22-12
Qld 26-18

Every Blues win a game where they got on top early and ran downhill all game.

Every close game where the result was still in the balance late, Queensland found a way to win.

Did anyone else think that game was kind of boring??
Turbo was very poor tonight. TPJ was terrible.. Paulo got like 15 minutes on the field!?!?! I'm a little shocked to be honest with the lack of enthusiasm tonight
Shocking game of SOO. First 3 minutes of last years decider had more entertainment in it alone.

Yeah this idea of building the team around Cleary isn't working, time for something else.

Pangai and Hudson Young will never play Origin again.

Cleary and Luai excel in a system but we have a good sample size of them at this level now - they give you a lot of slow, lateral attack. A change is needed.

Unfortunately the obvious alternative to both Luai and Cleary is Hynes. I know he was out of position at centre, but my big reservation about Hynes is his defence at this level, and he was exposed as soon as he came on - Munster is one of the smartest footy players going, and he targets Nicho constantly when they play against each other at club level, because they were together at Melbourne for years and he knows he has his number physically.

It was probably a mistake to pick Tommy Turbo on the basis of one game where he looked a little bit closer to full fitness. He should have had to prove it.

Haas, Yeo, Murray, Martin, Paulo, Api, To’o, Addo-Carr and Friz keep their spots. A bunch of other players have gotta go, including Teddy unfortunately. He’s an all time great for the Blues but looked like an old man out there.

Big change I’d make to the pack is Reece Robson as the starting 9 and Api off the bench.

If Latrell is fit for the next game that might paper over a lot of cracks, but changes have to happen. They just have to.

Everyone besides To’o, Frizell and Martin can walk back to NSW.

Freddy is an absolute A-Grade tosser for some of the selections he’s made. Crichton and TPJ are woeful and shouldn’t be anywhere near an Origin jersey, Tedesco is washed and Hynes was a waste of a bench spot.

The fact they walked all over us with 12 men on the field and Teddy getting out jumped by a prop is a disgrace and says it all. No chance they win at Suncorp.
I agree with everything you said apart of yout criticism of Crichton. He played well tonight although he can often he very ordinary.

I think walker should get another crack honestly.

I’m not saying they have to play like Penrith but they should be able to find each other with passes at this level and with that amount of familiarity.

It wasn’t a high quality game, that’s for sure. It was only the close scoreline that kept it interesting.

It should have been him since Maloney retired. Plays fast and direct & is a great instinctual player - if there’s a weakness he’ll spot it, and if there’s a loose ball & a chance to score, only Lockyer rivals him in his ability to get to it before everyone else. Sounds like an Origin player to me.

I think a big part of the problem was Freddy picking the wingers and centres on the wrong sides.
Penrith have had the best right edge defence over the past 3 years and that's mainly been Cleary, Crichton, Martin and To'o. So Freddy puts Crichton and To'o on the left, Cleary on the right and Martin on the bench.

I also think Turbo and the Fox would have been better in attack on the left.

I know it’s just a snippet into the half time talk. But it reinforced a belief.
QLD a have Billy Slater in the middle, probably did the first address, then Cam Smith is next to him addressing the players what he has found.
Cross to NSW and it’s Fittler seemingly going around the room. Turbo offers his 2 cents, Cleary talking, Yeo, Tedesco they all offering their opinions which isn’t necessarily a bad thing, it happens. But it kind of triggered the lightbulb that we have an awful lot of glorified players in the NSW team.

It’s a team predominantly picked on name, than recent performance. Think Freddy will die on his sword this series.

QLD just seem to get a heap of players, not even necessarily standout players, but in form tough players and give them a job to do. Who is their biggest name? Munster? Fifita? DCE? They get them in, do their job.

We’ve got an unfit, lacking confidence Turbo, playing out of position, asking him to pop up and roam around like a fullback.
Wish it went back to a proper rep game picking the best in their positions this year. Reward form.
