Set plays/Tactics

What set plays/tactics would you like to see more?

At the moment it feels like we do nothing at all in regards to set plays.

Personally, I think we need to do more from scrums. All that happens is the lock picks the ball up, passes it to either Uate, Jimmy or Sa'u, then they just run to the defensive line and get tackled for a gain of 5 metres. And we never ever go to the shortside from scrums for an easy overlap. And when they are 10m out from the try-line, its almost a garanteed 4 points.

I don't really see anything wrong with set plays or our attack for a matter of fact. If our fowards gain quality metres and get over the advantage line easily, we win. If anyone remembers Orford kicking off the scrum for Stewart, I wouldn't mind seeing Mullen do something similar for Uate, it could work really effectively.

I'd like to see more tackling personally.

The attack is fine. We saw that even today when they started to throw the ball around. I'm confident in their ability to score enough points, unless you let in 52

Mullen doesn't have the kicking game for it.

Every attacking short kick he puts in goes nowhere near where he intends it to.

tactics?...I'm not familiar with that word...typo right?...you must have meant to write tictacs instead...

Those kicks off the scrum were long kicks just booted down field 70 metres. You wouldn't need a short kicking game for that.

The kicking for the line at the end of our sets is a very big problem.
All of our kickers are hopeless, Gidley, Mullen and Rogers, it doesn't matter who kicks.
Every kick goes over the dead ball line.
After 19 rounds you think they would be able to get it right by now.
The only one that can kick, can't play.

Mullen has been up and down this season which contributes to whether we win games or not cause we arent capitalising on our opportunities to score in general.

But i havent seen a game this season where we've had a good game plan, stuck to it for 80 minutes which may all come back to the coaching.

Best tactic at the moment is to learn how to start a game, how many times this year have we been under 50% completion for the first 20 minutes

Here is a great tactic Stone should do STOP ZEB TAIA PASSING HOSPITAL BALLS AT THE LINE & DROP mCmANUS FOR VUNA OR kEVIN NAIQAMA ......

YES YES YES! bring back cooper drop the scotsman!

and if were going to do scrum moves lets just study the tigers scrum moves? could it get any harder?...or could study wallabies/sprinboks/kiwis scrum moves.

not that hard stoney (and all other coaches!)

We really need to get three in a tackle It all starts from the ruck, if we dont control the ruck then our markers are shot our A and B defenders dont get back the ten which makes our defence staggerd and tired which equals......................4 pointers lol. Really need our wingers /centres to take a few hit ups, mainly Sau and Mac oh and that cat Patteson Thats why I think Patto should play centres Because he wont hit it up!!! so he may aswell play wide........... SO WE REALLY NEED TO GO BACK TO THE BASICS winning the rucks an set completion, there is no strategy there just good tough footy!......Look at the Dragons they play two around the back for Boyd to pick up a winger ....But they get to do that real basic play through wining the ruck and completing sets which ceates momentum, to see that boring Wayne Bennet coached backline move...........Which worked at the broncs for years and now is working for the saints!!

i think our attack is good but i think under brian smith it was constructed better. Rick Stone said at the beginning of the year he wants the team to offer more in attack at times it looks like the knights are making it up on the spot. Under brian smith the knights were a well drilled team and offered more structure and effectiveness in attack and defence.

Need more scrum moves, bit more second phase play and better last tackle options. but in saying this our forwards need to stand up to allow mullen and gidley to create something.

I think we should all relax ATM. We won't win the premiership this year so we should look forward to 2011 when Beau Henry comes. He has a great kicking game and that Marmin Barba guy, if we have signed him, he has a bit of a kicking game too.

I know this topic is very old, but watching today, when we got the penalty 5 out, how would you like to see a set play from that. De Gois takes the option to kick for the sideline, but instead of kicking out, he just kicks it onto a charging Vuna, I think it would catch the defence out from 5 metres out and would probably lead to a try?

Not sure if they have rules against that kinda thing these days as it use to be a bit of a trick play back in the day with the crossfield penalty kick. Rules or no-rules im not too sure itd be seen in the spirit of the game, but definately would catch defences off guard.

In a word...'Rubbish'

Lets relax and just hope some kid who is good in 20s is going to take us from an up and down out of the 8 side to a premiership contender? He may turn out great, lets hope so. But right now hes nothing. Quote Phil Gould; 'the best junior I have ever seen was Ben Walker, he was just 5 times better then anybody else on the field'. Ben Walker wasnt a bad player in the end, but he hardly lived up to that kind of billing did he. Henry is a good prospect and thus a good addition to the roster. SOme of you guys crap on like hes the answer to our prayers. Its very unrealistic not to mention unfair on the kid
