Season player reviews

Pearce didn't have to play a team in the top 6 other than the semi.
If you take out the games against the good sides most of the team would have better win %.

Yeah Clifford probably tops the team for win percentage if he doesn’t have to count his first two games, on a hiding to nothing leading a busted side full of players he just met around against Parra & Souths.

Fantasy points even though they are for a game, do show a pretty decent reflection of a player's efforts. All it is at the end of the day is points given for statistics. The salary cap has sort of taken a back seat the last couple years because of bigger issues, but I think if we're ever going to try & have a more fair salary cap, it will have to be based off points allocated out, maybe not for statistics, but maybe a player's standing in the game (games played, tier 1 tests, origins, tier 2 tests etc.)

Tyson Frizell

He had a great year, but he didn't make as much difference to the team as I thought he would.
I think we could use him better, but not sure how.

Add strike outside him (Best to right centre, Gagai playing left) to take some of the heat off and give us genuine attack both sides.

Yep I agree. Best just needs to work in his defence and having to do it every attacking set from opposing teams will set him up to win or fail and we will know if his up to it. Frizz needs to start creating space for outside men rather then going infield poking and prodding.

The more I think about it the more I like out centre wing setup if gagai is left. Good balance both sides. Hopefully whoever is left backrow add some strike to give best more space.

Even fitz at his best would be great. Everyone knows his attack is the shortball from ponga, but I to sleep and he is in easy - simple role to open up that edge for gagai.

Hopefully frizz best and hunt can work out something on the right.

One thing he's good at which I haven't really seen mentioned, he hits the line, spins immediately & throws it out the back. Probably once or twice it's lead to an error, but I've seen him do it well many more times. It's a simple but effective play that keeps the ball in play, especially dangerous when you've got Ponga hanging around out the back.

Can someone please explain the logic behind the idea of moving Bradman Best to right centre? I’m pretty sure he’s a left hand carry/right hand fend guy, and he’s got big defensive issues & in general the right is where you need your better defender, so I don’t know why there’s the assumption it’d help the team…

Yeah why can't we play gags over on the right. He is a right arm carrier but swaps aswell so would be more effective there. Just hoping he can keep up the defensive efforts I've seen recently. If it's anything like last time he was here I won't watch anytime it goes down his side. Best is a lefty and I hadn't noticed until you said haha.

My thoughts on Braddy to the right start with Gagai. He was a natural right sided player when he was here last, left arm fend right foot step. But when he took the ball up in half, usually getting the ball on the left side of the ruck, his strengths would carry him across the defensive line instead of crashing in to it. QLD, then Souths, flipped that on its head. Playing on the left, his natural strengths on yardage plays now see him power in to the line. They actually rely on him for quick play the balls. Then in the attacking zone, he hits the right lines and his speed is his best asset there anyway. He is going so well there, so I want Gags playing on the left.

That leaves Bradman to play on the right. He doesn't have a step like Gagai, I've seen him fend with both hands and carry the ball in both. I cant see an issue with him transferring to right. And then USE him. Instantly we are more dangerous both sides.

I'd assume the logic is that Best was a below-average NRL centre last year. And Gagai was pretty good. We signed him to start.

So you build your line-up around your certain starters, and then fill out the rest. If you remove junior reputation, and just think about 2021 performance, I'm not sure you're "moving Best to right centre" - it's more that our second centre is an open position at the moment, and Best can compete for it, with Sasagi, with Toa, and with Young.

Has Gagai ever played anywhere but right centre or on the wing at Origin level? I’m pretty sure he hasn’t…

Woah, hold up. Below average? Across the whole comp? Is that really true.

I can cop that he was a long way below last year, and therefore maybe disappointing, but worse than the average NRL centre? Dunno about that one chief.

My take on Gagai is that they played him at left centre for Souths because they lost GI and recruited Jimmy the Jet, who’s a right centre. Gagai would be the only player in the side who can capture some of the strike GI gave them in that spot. Then they moved Campbell Graham there later and it turns out it’s easily his best position (dude is probably the best defensive centre in the comp, can’t say I picked that would be the case a few years back).

Plenty will still tell you Gagai is a better winger too.

I think Dane’s great anywhere in the three quarter line and he probably won’t only play one position with us, but I’ll be very shocked if he’s not lining up at right centre round 1 next year. I don’t think there’s any consideration in either the coaching staff or playing group that anyone but Bradman should line up at left centre when he’s fit.
