Sack Adam O’Brien

It's $2m, it's not insignificant. As indicated by BT earlier, if they do sack him, they'll have to make cuts to cover the cost.
Don't disagree just thought the comparisons were interesting. Kevvy + Madge if it happens would up there in costs. Not that they would care they'd still rake a profit. I believe the financial reports did indicate the team (Knights) made a profit when they paid out Nathan Brown (even if it was a much smaller amount)
Since then they have been in charge for 5+ years...probably had time to build up that nestegg $$$

And I'm not saying they should or shouldn't or use money as a motivating factor. As mentioned they aren't in the position where they should be bringing in another rookie. That always costs more $$$ on top of that.

According to Alex McKinnon our next coach is hiding in plain sight.... Boyd Cordner
I like how he says the NRL is becoming a fickle business and it’s easier to sack the coach rather than half the team.
I wouldn’t call this a fickle situation. He’s been here for 6 years with more bad than good and we’re getting worse.

PS. The alternative to a rookie head coach is likely a bloke who has already failed elsewhere. Arthur (likely at the Titans), Des (likely about to be sacked again), Barrett, Holbrook, Kevvy, Hook etc.
Totally, apart from Cleary, Bellamy, Robinson and Bennett (the last two are debatable these days) are there really any successful coaches out there? And let’s face it, none of those ones are joining us.

The most impressive ones outside them in recent years have been Ciraldo and Fitzgibbon - rookie coaches.

Nathan Brown had that open ended contract where we didn’t have to pay him out.

The last thing we need is another rookie coach.
We aren't paupers anymore.
We need to spend big dollars on the best coach we can find.
Might as well stick with O'Brien as throw money at an SG Ball coach.
Yeah... I think supporters will be gun shy to have a first grade coach come in without and experience from now on..
Sure, other rookies coachs comming into grade seem to be goin ok. Maybe we just got stuck with the temu version?
I think Newcastle town itself being what it is needs an older figure head leading the way. With life and coaching experience behind them. They need to be an exceptional man manager.

I did wonder if they could make a play for Bellamy on setting him the challenge of rebuilding the club and culture (with a big pile of cash to go with it). Doesn't he have ties up Newcastle way?

Tinkler spent 1.3 mill on Bennett and close to that on his hand picked assistants.
That was the only time we have spent money on the best we could find.

Having said that, if we are paying O'Brien 2 mill for the next 2 years, we are being robbed blind. He should be in the bottom 5 paid coaches in the NRL till he actually wins something.

Yeah that salary is crazy. We were competing with nobody to re-sign him.

We probably need to remember that the 2mill payout was put out there when he still had 2 years + 2/3 of this season left on his contract. I’d also seriously suspect a lot of “rounding up” going on for a sensationalised headline. He’s not on that per year. I’d hazard a guess around 700k per season which is pretty standard for a FG coach. Then there’s Moses…

My issue isn’t the amount but more the fact that they raced to re-sign him to an extension so quickly. Shows how low the board aim.

I believe South Sydney were the main competitor. It even felt like neck and neck until Tinkler offered him $1m + with bonuses for playoffs/premierships etc. I don’t even think he consulted anyone he just stepped in and did it lol.
Maybe giving him full control and letting him bring those guys with another $1.3m probably helped too.
Dragons may have tried to also persuade him but he was adamant on moving on having done his job winning that 2010 premiership

It always seems like damned if you do damned if you don’t, if you’re not showing faith in a coach then it’s not a good look.
At least when Des had contractual issues with Manly (the first time) and similar with Bennett (the second broncos time) they were established and already winners so you just give them what they want and live with it. Otherwise…

Maybe we just need to go with the Canberra/Ricky route, someone who knows the club well and is a former club legend who the guys will play for. In before people suggest Matty Johns, Unrealistic lol

If this is the case, we have Steve Simpson coaching in the lower grades.
If our current squad had Steve's attitude, we would be world beaters. The man was a machine.

I was meaning for AOB’s current contract. :)

Oh yeah I don't why I blanked on that and had my posts mixed up.
I do wonder in those sorts of situations whether teams would bother enquiring...usually it's the other way around they were looking elsewhere and they thought screw it let him coach out the year. Worked out okay then lol.

Love the idea. Ricky came from a solid coaching tree at the Roosters, working with solid minds, and learning from Gus. Similar thing you give them some solid assistants, maybe one with more experience like a Furner type and see how it goes.

I’m guessing Robbo is one of the debatable ones?
I don’t know anything about him other than his time at the Roosters. Sort of reminds me of Mal, lots of accolades after an enchanted run. They’ve never really struggled to buy the players they’ve needed/wanted and he doesn’t seem to have needed to just work with what he’s got. I just don’t see him working wonders at a struggling club.

If yes if AOB was to be sacked then McDermott would be natural to fill in as head coach with an assistant that could easily be Cordner and if works out great.
I do think Wests will stick AOB till contract end and if no improvement then a change will happen and that becomes more unlikely McDermott and more a local type, Simpson, coming along with the juniors he has coached
