Rumour: Knights to offload Jarrod Mullen as part of player clean-out

The one thing this shows is that 2017 might not be much better than 2016 - which is daunting. I don't know if i'm up for another wooden spoon year.

It needs to be done. Regardless of how good Mullen is when he's healthy, he's getting paid too much money and still has 2 years to run on his deal. Our salary cap is in such a mess, the quicker we can get rid of these players on overpaid contracts the better. Even if it means we have to pay part of their new deals. It will mean more short-term pain but it needs to be done.

I think Lamb will be ready for more first grade next season but hopefully we sign an experienced half, even if just for depth.

Agreed. Good to see another of the old brigade that was happy to help us collect spoons is off.

So let me get this straight, Hodkinson has done NOTHING this year, at all, barely led the team whatsoever and would cost just as much to clean out...but Mullen needs to go?

And we're going to spend the cap space on ****ing Chris Heighington? Give me a break. I've supported Brown completely so far but this makes absolutely no sense. You could argue stability in the halves for Mullen but he's done more in 4/5 games this year than Hodkinson has done all season. If his idea is to replace him with Cogger or Lamb, they're still too young and too far away from being NRL ready.

Heighington would be coming on a pie and chips contract.

Browns brave alright his likely to get sacked and leave a maguire or cleary to come in with half the cap to play with.

Wonder what B Smith is up to these days we could do worse if Brown gets flicked.

Well guys we have to bite the bullet. Mullo, as much as he has been my favouite player for years, is just not worth half a mill with his injury record over the p[ast four or five years. And at 31 next season, time is running out like his hammies.

Thought u couldnt just tap players on the shoulder.... hmmm.

In Brown we trust....hmmm:think:
That's right in Brown we trust , Soon there will be no dead wood left from the last however many years we have been playing like crap Go Brownie ...Finally someone with the balls to do what needs to be done ...

I have liked brown since he arrived and think he is heading in the right direction but he has fully lost the plot if he wants to get rid of Mullen and I can't see why we would need to offload players to afford Chris heighton. On a side note petro goes to my gym was joking around with him saying he should come down to the knights and help out the safiti boys, he said he had worked with them in Fiji camp and reckons those two boys could be anything and we should Do everything we can to keep them to there prime 24/25.

It shows me that 2017 could be a good year where we start playing good footy unlike we have done for 10 yrs thx to the players we had including Mullen ...

That comment Ethan shows me u have no idea mate.

I get ur over Mullen being injured! But if he had a few good forwards in front of him in the past 10yrs we mite on done alright.

Tell u what this will do,

The current members will halve by next season, a new owner will come in... Brown will get a performance review! And then sacked.

Ive Been saying it for a while now ...What have we won since Mullen has been our main playmaker , nothing but the spoon and what rep honors has he achieved for himself country origin which most people think means nothing and 1 soo game and then he was sacked and never asked back and thats it ...Personally i would like a world class 5/8 which Mullens cv says he is not ...
Most on here wanted a clean out of the dead wood , now that Brown looks like he will get rid of the last of it your crying about it. He may have been our best player but that's why those players are gone and hopefully so is he and then we can throw a packet of cash at good F/b and prop . Chris Heighington wouldn't be on too much I wouldn't think.

If Mullen had this or if someone did that Mullen would be good , people have been making excuses for Mullen for so long it makes me want to throw up ...
Mullen has been an ok 5/8 and 7 and sometimes good but almost never very good and never great in all the time he has had ....Time to give someone else a go ...

Of course you would think that because your the most negative supporter they have ...

mullen and hodkinson are on the same coin roughly with the same amount of time to run on their contracts. I know which player fills me with more confindence when their on the park.

Ridiculous decision if true. We look somewhat competitive with Mullen and absolute garbage when we're without him. And Chris Heighington of all players, really? He's 34 and a nothing player to begin with. He'd add nothing to this squad but experience. I'd rather someone who's experience but good at least.

Hahaha kinda with ya slots.

Eathan sorry mate,
But a half isnt a team! U need forward that go forward, u need back that hit holesband chase with hunger.
2 things this club hasnt had.
The more i read and hear about this club, the further away a competitive team becomes possible!
Complete and utter joke tbh.
Shameful for such a great junior area and supporting base to gain zero.

Im putting a green back on us to win today!
Mullen to have a blinder and score 2 tries and absolutely carve up all game.

it clearly stated in the title of the article that it is a rumour, regardless whether it is true or not we have to let brown and mooney do what they believe is right for the team.

We cannot start something and then end it early and not see it through like we did with Brian smith.

Personally I would be keeping Mullen and punting Hodkinson as he has done nothing all year.

I don't think the 2 are related and people assuming it is, is a bit silly. We need to fill our 25 and a guy like Heighington on a 12 month deal until we go all out in 2018 makes perfect sense.

You could put JT in our team and he would be awful. Seriously what do people expect when we are never on the front foot, halves cannot simply create something from nothing.

I hope he does maybe being told he needs to move on will be the kick in the arse that he needs to take that step up that he has never taken before. Melbourne don't play well without Cronk , Nth Qld don't play well without Thurston , Manly don't play well without DCE , Newcastle didn't play well without Andrew and they all had and have good packs and backs ...A great half can make a team mate ...

This year alone,

Melbourne have had 7 games without Cronk and won 5
Cowboy have had 4 games without JT and won 3

Hardly teams dependent on 1 player.

It all boils down to "personalities". I refuse to argue with anyone about Mullen's ability as a footballer. If you seriously think he's an ordinary player you quite clearly have no idea. If you don't like the bloke for some reason other than footy that's fair enough. How can anyone hold getting injured during a game against a player ? Comments not directed at any individual.

Sure, it needs to be done, but next year? I would fully support this decision if it was a year down the track, it would bloody hurt to see Mullen go but it would be for the better & we'd have 500k spare to spend on someone who isn't injured all the time. I believe in what Brown is doing but I'd rather not have 3 spoons in a row to show for it. The thought of having to go through another season like this, maybe even worse, Brown is a brave man. We're going to be so bad with a 19-year-old playing every game with some sh*tey past it player as backup like Jeff Robson or Benji, just because they're cheap. 500k next year simply just isn't worth what we're going to get back for it. It's all good to move on highly paid players like Mullen & Hodkinson, IF you have someone better lined up to replace them, not players who are incredibly worser.

Was looking at some stats to see how much he's played and it's been ok and he's had a good run

http://www.rugbyleagueproject.org/players/jarrod-mullen/summary.html

2007: was shut down the second half of the year
After that it looked good, missed a few games here and there which happens to everyone
Since that preliminary final under Bennett he's had horrible luck and this year is no different, the days of playing 20+ games might be over and that may be a tough pill to swallow because of how much he's paying paid and if that's not good enough for brown then so be it.

The winning percentages since as well do not tell a good take apart from 06 with Joey, 09 where we should have finished higher and 13'
Could argue last year we were better with him there but the rest of the team wasnt up to scratch and stone fell on his sword because of it

So the problem is brown is already here after a year, and Mullen may or may not be chopped now or down the track depending on the developement of cogger and lamb, will brown see this out?

The plans for the halves are just one piece of the puzzle with all that said!
I'd be ok with it if there was some sort of clear plan
