Round 7 - Knights V Panthers - Saturday 15 April 5:30pm - McDonald Jones Stadium

It was pretty windy at the ground last night. Cleary missed the only difficult conversion he had. Watched a replay of the penalty kick, Thought Miller hung it out to the left expecting the wind to straighten it up a bit.

I'm spewing we shot ourselves in the foot that second half. We were clearly the better side that game and should have won.

Great first half. How defence and attack is getting better every week. We put ourselves under so much pressure in the second half looked gassed in the end but managed to still stay in the game.

I have a feeling Cowboys could be a dangerous game. On form we should win but that's the danger. I rekon the cows will be up for a big game. In the past we have gotten cocky when we were on a bit of a roll. Hopefully this team has a different mindset this year.

D-saf needs a rest or off the bench with Jsaf back. My only gripe with AOB is leaving crossland out there too long. I guess if we didn't have to do so much defending he may have been ok to play a bit longer.

Overall I'm so impressed with how we are performing. I'm in the camp of Ponga coming back into this side will make us a better side. Gamble definitely needs to be in the 17.

Watched the game when I got home late last night without knowing the result … so many talking points!!! What a performance first of all! Deserved at least a point for that.

• Some shambolic officiating in that game. A penalty for bad language while in possession (leads to a try). A penalty for touching hair when making a tackle (leads to a try). Ref sin bins the wrong player and then the whole sin binning gets overturned. And to be fair that should have been a penalty for Fitzgibbon on Cleary when he took the field goal, totally brainless stuff.

• We desperately need a goalkicker!

• Crossland was really good but he needs a break … he can’t play 80 minutes, we tried to do this last year with Randall too and he lost all energy as the season progressed.

• The 20 minutes after halftime was shocking, starting with Miller’s dropped kick off, it was like we were transported back to 2022 with error after error. Panthers made plenty in that time too, we should have been putting the game away in that period.

• Why do we need stupid golden point, that was the perfect example of a game where both sides deserved one point.

• Our back three are way too reluctant to catch kicks on the full. I’ll give Cleary some credit for some challenging kicks, but we need to do much much better. Young was found out in that area again. Miller is so hesitant. It’s better to try and knock it on, but at least stop the play, than have everyone trying to rush back on defence as we let it bounce anywhere.

• Amazing crowd and loved Frizell’s huge smile in the press conference when they told him they were chanting Newcastle after fulltime. 🥲

• No idea how Ponga slots back into this team next week, but looking forward to seeing it!

Ponga is our six, with Gamble off the bench. But could switch that in the first few games back with Ponga.

I’d be in favour of a tweak where both sides get a point for a normal time draw and an extra point for the win.

Got nothing to do with our horrible golden point record of course!

It is frustrating that if we held onto the balls 50% better and do a better job in defusing short kickoffs like we did against Manly, we win that game and would sit equal 2nd with Warriors right now. Our defence was superb still in that 2nd half, just had to do so much of it. Credit to edge defence and defensive coaches. I don't want to hear "Panthers were off" our edge stood up superbly and middles scrambled the whole game.

Boys need a big week recovering. A couple golden point games in last few weeks mixed in with humidity in Nth QLD, they'll have to be fresh body wise. Cows will be smarting how far down the ladder they are and will want to put local boy Ponga on his arse. Strong start and emphasis on ball control will be needed.

I'm hoping (Im getting way too far ahead of myself here) But hoping that that loss, imbues the team, coaching staff for rest of season, knowing we can match it with the best and come finals time repay the favour to a certain 2 time premiership "Iceman" ;) :P

You can't have three competition points on offer under some conditions in some games but not others. You would need to make it three points for a normal win, two points for a GP win & one point for a GP loss.
Easier to just get rid of Golden Point. They only introduced it because the Yanks have it in their sports. Sometimes both teams deserve a point each, simple.

Yep and that would add complication if there is an actual draw - one and a half points for each side?

Why?

In rugby union for example, games can have between four and seven competition points on offer depending on bonus points. The NRL had bonus points in their pre-season tournament this year. Soccer gives 3 competition points out to a winning team, but only one each in the event of a draw. Domestic cricket comps have different numbers of competition points available depending on the result. And I could go on.

The number of competition points awarded in a game isn't some sacrosanct rule that can never be different. Plenty of comps run perfectly fine on that basis. Though I do agree that the best outcome would be just getting rid of golden point altogether.

Yep that's my whole point.

You can have as many bonus points available for anything you want. But they all need to be on offer to both teams in every game.

You can't just add a special bonus point that only appears in games where it finishes level at full time.
