Round 22: Knights v Titans @ Skilled Stadium

mullen was outstanding last night.......that try to paterson when gidley was running behind and the titans were all going to gidley and mullen just popped a short ball to paterson was brilliant.

Bring on the Raiders going to be tough.

Yeah I agree with that. It was mentioned somewhere that we'd be 7th so I was going by that, thinking we were like 4 behind the Dragons not 6 haha.

Nah Vunas in sparkling form, no way will wes push him out, after that effort of his against the Titans, he will go off against the raiders, they love the physical stuff and so does he.

tafuas in of course on the bench instead of the other Tolar, hes starting to look pretty good as well.

Brian Smith: Newcastle Knights can make finals impact

THIS time last year a humiliated Newcastle was running second-last on the NRL table and looked a club in utter turmoil.

They had just been embarrassed 50-16 by Manly in round 22 amid high dramas between new coach Brian Smith and his senior players.
A year on and who could believe the difference.

After a convincing 32-12 win over Gold Coast last night at Skilled Park, the Knights are in eighth spot and headed for a shock appearance in this year's finals.

Victory pushed Newcastle to 24 points and sets up a huge match against fellow unfashionables Canberra on Sunday in Canberra.

The Knights have speed, but more importantly, they have size. And plenty of it. They overwhelmed and overpowered a smaller Gold Coast, whose season is now all but over.

Last night was the Knights' third successive win.

"And there is still improvement in us," said Knights second-rower Steve Simpson.

"I think we can trouble a few sides, definitely."

Newcastle have a monster forward pack who could intimidate any team in the NRL.

And there is no doubt the Knights, sitting in eighth spot, could trouble the competition hot-shots should they reach the finals.

"We are trying to be more positive than we were five or six weeks ago," said Newcastle coach Brian Smith.

"As a coaching staff, we asked the players to try and find one more pass and for them to ask a few more questions which will take pressure off our defence.

"The boys have done a pretty good job of that so far."

The only downside to last night's win was centre Adam MacDougall being placed on report, twice, for separate incidents

In the 15th minute, referee Steve Lyons put MacDougall on report for an alleged head slam on Titans centre Gavin Cooper.

Then, just one minute later, MacDougall and Simpson were on report for a dangerous throw on Titans forward Michael Hodgson.

MacDougall could be facing a few weeks on the sidelines.

Newcastle will however welcome back a number of players for the Raiders game, including centre Wes Naiqama and NSW prop Ben Cross.

The Knights scored several brilliant tries last night with flair and speed.
"The seven or eight blokes we have out are all praying we get the job done," Smith said.

"One or two losses though and we are out.

"There is a bit of pressure but so far we are handling it. But to say Canberra in Canberra will be tough is the understatement of the year."

Newcastle bolted to a 16-0 lead last night after 25 minutes and the match was all but over.

The Titans tried hard but had too many players out and never looked like stringing together several tries to roar back into the game.

The Knights have two giant outside backs in Cooper Vunu and Junior Sau, while forward Corey Paterson continues to impress.

With Jarrod Mullen and Kurt Gidley organising, Newcastle are well-rounded and well coached.

"We give away too many tries in batches," said Titans coach John Cartwright.

"It was a disappointing result. They never gave up, but physically they were a lot stronger than us."

Asked was his side now out of finals contention, Cartwright said:
"Mathematically we can still get there but it will be very hard to turn it around with the way we are playing.

"We will get a few troops back next week but it doesn't get any easier. This is a learning process for us."

After watching his side get humbled by Newcastle last night, Cartwright said he would give the Knights every chance of an upset in the opening week of the finals.
"If they run eighth, I wouldn't really want to play them if I ran first," Cartwright said of the Knights.
"They're right up there, the sides we've played recently have all been big physical sides, in Melbourne, Canberra and the Knights - very similar."

we cant get too ahead of ourselves, we havnt had a big test for a few weeks now. But in saying that we have beat 2 of the top 4 sides, and gone close to the sharks. Big test this week, then a game we can't take lightly against the cows (they will be fighting to avoid the spoon), then two tough games into the finals. The perfect preperation if we are to make the finals.
 
Thats a big called from cartwright and i think it shows how much of a great team we have being playing like!! We will be the dark horse of the finals if we get in
 
Good on that Jordan Rankin but HOLY COW I am sick of hearing about it. The friggin herald on Tuesday had all about the JETS and only one photo of the knights n it was Tolar getting smashed and most of the story was about Jordan Rankin. Come on!!!!!!!!! :fist::fist:
