ROUND 16: Knights v Broncos @ Suncorp Stadium

Tyrone Roberts dumped to NSW Cup, future at Newcastle uncertain

OUT of favour Newcastle halfback Tyrone Roberts has been dumped to the NSW Cup with his future at the club under a cloud because of the Knights’ pursuit of Bulldogs and NSW playmaker Trent Hodkinson for next season.

Roberts has recovered from an ankle ligament injury that has seen him sidelined for the past two weeks but failed to win back his top grade spot against the Broncos on Friday night.

While the club indicated he had been “ruled out” alongside backrower Jeremy Smith with his ankle injury, The Daily Telegraph understands he is almost certain to line up against Wentworthville in the Knights’ NSW Cup clash on Sunday in Sydney.

It now becomes a real test of character for Roberts, with the final year of his contract at the Knights next season also believed to be in jeopardy with Hodkinson on the club’s recruitment target list.

It is understood if Hodkinson agreed to join the Knights, the club would be forced to try and off-load Roberts to a rival to accommodate the Blues playmaker under the salary cap.

There was good news for the Knights on Thursday with Jarrod Mullen poised to return after a six week injury lay-off to partner skipper Kurt Gidley in the halves at Suncorp Stadium. Livewire Jake Mamo, who set up that remarkable try last Sunday against Cronulla, has deservedly retained his place at fullback.

Mullen, who needs surgery on a broken bone at the base of his big toe, satisfied the club’s medical staff of his fitness after getting through two training sessions this week.

He appeared to be running freely during Thursday’s session and travelled with the squad to Brisbane later in the day.

But as a precaution, Carlos Tuimavave, who was originally named at five-eighth by coach Rick Stone, also travelled with the team as insurance should there be any lingering doubt about Mullen getting through the game.

Tough backrower Smith lost his battle to prove his fitness and is now eyeing off a return from his sternum injury in a fortnight against Canberra with the Knights having the bye next weekend.

Newcastle faces a massive challenge against the table-topping Broncos in trying to improve on a disastrous record of nine losses in their past 10 games that has seen them rated the new wooden spoon favourites.

They will go into the game without three first-choice front-rowers in Kade Snowden, Dave Fa’alogo and Jack Stockwell and Smith.

New father Akuila Uate, who celebrated the birth of son Kingston (brother for Tatianna and Miriama) on Monday, admitted a real team effort would be required to cause a boilover.

“We definitely need to play as a team. Turn up and play together,” he said.

Roberts has had the weirdest career.
For years before he got the 7 jersey all Knights fans were super critical of anyone who wore it who wasn't Johns. Tyrone got the jersey, and let's face it, he got a free pass for years as the "work experience kid" who we just didn't expect to do anything. His best attribute was his low work rate, which also meant he had a low mistake rate. Basically, for years we didn't even notice that the guy in our most important jersey was just a passenger in the side. On the rare occasions when he did something good, we were all so surprized that he got heaps of praise for it. The thing I find most bizarre of all is that he played nearly every game of the Bennett era. The great coach did get in guys like Minto, Dobson and Gower, and did threaten to replace him with AJ Davis at one stage, but I think the first thing Bennett should have done would be to give us a quality pair of halves, but he had to spend a lot of money replacing our star fullback instead.

Yes, buying Boyd meant we had to move Kurt and Boyd's signing must be rated as our second worst signing of all time after Greg Smith. I can't understand why Bennett did not sign a classy halfback.

I especially hate seeing his happy face when he scores against us

"Good on ya' mate you scored. But stop smiling. You can't be happy with a try, it's just not on mate. Game face bro, game face."

What's happened to the club in the last week - trying to sign players, dropping under-performers ... we've grown a set of balls, suddenly!

Imagine if this happened after Round 5. We'd be top 4! *jk jk lol*

After an eight week lay off and poor form before that, Mullo should be coming back via the Cup. If Mamo goes to Cup I am sending my cap and scarf back and asking Mods for a slight change in name. The kid played great last week, Gids woeful, and you can guess who will be retained at FB if Mullo does return.

Mamo will be there, it is Carlos who is going to drop down.

Was Mullen in bad form? I can't even remember ... all those losses have blurred into one. Thought he was really good in our first four wins though.

No he had been in poor form too. Both him and Roberts were dreadful. I think Mullen did manage to get a good game or 2 in before he got injured though.

Gidley was our best against Cronulla. Set up 3 tries and defended really well. Made one stupid error (the pass they called wasn't forward imo). It won't be an issue Mullen be a straight swap for Carlos.
As for Mullen I thought he was starting to play quite well in the few weeks before the injury.

What about stepping in touch and then giving away a blatant strip penalty on the fourth tackle, in the seconds before halftime, right before Cronulla scored?

That was the error I was referring to. Couldn't recall the strip. I wasn't counting the pass because it didn't go forward.

Yeah Gids made a few blunders, but he put on three tries. So we would have been worse off without him.

I don't get the hate tbh. He had more try assists in one game than Roberts the struggler has all season.

Well I thought he was good apart from that. He's gone alright in the halves this year.

There's always the brainsnaps with him, that sorta goes without saying. Those were a couple of his worst in recent times.

Expecting to lose by about 40 points, considering their reserve grade team smashed us at home. HOWEVER i was expecting the same agaisnt the roosters and storm last year so hopefully they deliver a classic out of the blue performance.

That's the kind of bliss day optimism I'm usually in favor for [emoji12]

So Mullen seems to be able to train all week, yet never plays at the last minute....bloody annoying.

Broncs by a shipload.
