Round 1 2016 Team

If Tapine goes than Luke Yates should be in contention for that bench spot especially considering we have Rochow who plays 80 and Tariq who also plays 80. Whoever the bench second rower is is going to be rotating with smith at lock anyway so picking either Yates or pushing Stockwell back to lock would give us some real size off the bench. For round one I would go
8. Snowden
9. Levi
10. Paea
11. K. sims
12. Rochow
13. Smith

14. Randell
15. Stockwell
16. Pauli Pauli
17. Matatora/ Yates

Luke Yates has kinda disappeared off the rader this off season

Yea I have seen little mention of him. He was fantastic last year in both the u20s and NSW cup and his very quick for a big man and has a great motor also. I thought he may have had a go at the nines but maybe brown held him back to have a look at him in the trial next weekend.

It seems like Brown basically picked all the guys who are closest to the first-grade side so he could get a look at them all, while also fitting in some bigger name players to fit the requirements of the tournament. Yates wouldn't get a run over Pauli Pauli, Tapine or the Saifitis, so those guys were the most urgent ones for him to get a look at. I'd say those guys who are a bit more behind the pecking order like Bhana, Yates, King, Cogger, Freeman etc. will be looking at getting a run in the trial.

What I'd like to see

1. Gagai

2. Mamo
3. Sione
4. Feeney
5. Uate
6. Mullen
7. Hodkinson
8. Snowden
9. Levi
10. Paea
11. Korbin
12. Rochow
13. Smith

14. Randell
15. Tariq
16. Pauli Pauli
17. Stockwell

I'm looking forward to Sione getting some good ball. He's going to be a handful for a few opposing teams.

Are you even losing that much picking one of the Safitis over Tapine? Probably not based on Tapine's "don't give a ****" efforts in the nines.

They look like front rowers to me. They lack the mobility for mine to be an edge backrower. If Korbin moves to backrow and we have that 17 mentioned above I'm all sweet. But if the Safiti's or Fitzgibbon are in FG ahead of him I think it's the wrong move.
I can't agree with oh well we're not a contender so let's pick a weaker side bullsh*t though. You pick the best side available regardless of where they'll be in 12 months time.
Also is there any confirmation that he's leaving other 'reports out of Canberra' say?'

At least the Saifitis have a go and aren't afraid of getting dirt on their jerseys

We really aren't missing much if we don't play Tapine, it's not like we're talking about dropping Mullen or Gagai. It's Tapine. The guy who is no certainty of not starting in NSW Cup anyway even if he isn't going to Canberra. I get that he's a good prospect but that's all he is right now and all he's going to be this year is Canberra's good prospect. Unless he's absolutely ripping teams apart then we can say we can't leave him out of first grade but there's plenty of guys who are just as good and I have no problem with him p***ing off if he signs with them.

Junior, you were so right about what you said here, you yourself are falling into the trap of the cliche!

That doesn't bother me one bit, I rate him from my own opinion of seeing him play, not their butthurt comments after it looks like he's jumping ship. Every fan trashes the player that's leaving their club. Some have already started trashing Tapine because he's been slightly linked to Canberra. Sione got trashed when he was linked the Dogs and then the Dogs fans trashed him after he stayed with us. It's the mentality of most fans, going against the player that looks to have no future at the club. He's a huge young hard running forward who we won't be spending much on and with his most exciting years ahead of him, it's a good coup for us.

I must say, I'm going to be pretty sad to see him go, a genuine quality second-row prospect. He might have some flaws, but all 21-year-old players do. To bash Tapine for his flaws would be contradicting being happy about signing Pauli Pauli, another young forward with flaws, hoping that as he matures into the NRL, he will become a more well rounded player. If Tapine does sign elsewhere, drop him & develop Jacob Saifiti instead. Pretty simple.

Haha I was thinking the exact same thing as I was writing that, just proof that it's true, as soon as a player commits to another club your commitment to that players leaves with him no matter how much you once rated him. Well it does for me anyway.

I personally think Jacob Safiti will eventually make a permanent move to the front row soon with his brother. I know he's normally an edge backrower but I don't see any footwork or tackle-breaking ability to be causing havoc there in FG. Jacob (like his bro) is excellent at absorbing contact and pushing through extra metres, though. Both have good motors also.

Tapine will be a big loss because he's probably our only real second row prospect (Yates will be a middle forward only imo).

12 Tapine / PauliPauli if Tapine has signed with Canberra .

The Nines is the first real time I got a good look at Pauli, he was known primarily as a second-rower coming through the grades I'm pretty sure, but looking at his body shape & size, I can't imagine him running out wide. Think his future here for sure is in the front row.

I never understood those saying Pauli is crap and should be a NSW Cup player, he could very well be a bust but he's always ran like a psycho like he did in the Nines, he's always been huge, always been powerful, he was one of the more highly rated young forwards in the game and I'm real excited he's getting the chance to potentially have his breakout year with us.

I think Tapine was a bit lazy during the nine but made some nice meter eating runs just bashing it up through player, I for one will be sad to see him go if he does, but somethings telling me he won't.

Pauli Pauli would make a great 2nd rower, but we'll need to wait until maybe next season or so, needs to trim down quite a big. So prop for him this year, but I think that's because of they way Parra play, basically everyone in their forward pack could play prop week in, week ou. So Pauli was always going to be 120kgs. I'd like to see him trim down to something like 110kg-115kgs by next seasons, but we're talking about this season...

A bench of Levi, Tapine, Pauli and Mataora looks the goods to me, plus all Islanders

Levi to start, Randell to bench and I think you are pretty close Afro other than Tapine. Either Stockwell or Mickey to find a spot. Mataora may have to work up from the Cup.

Brown bought PauliPauli to add size to our pack so I hope he puts on another 10 kg of muscle not lose it ...

And I understand doing it if you have someone just as good as a replacement. By this logic the Roosters should have dropped RTS and Maloney last year as soon as they decided to go elsewhere.

Established first graders and both freaks.

Tapine is neither.

The thing with Pauli was yes he ran hard but he never dragged defenders. He went down as soon as he felt contact which in my opinion is a bit worrying with a guy of his size.

At 130kg he'd be a fat slob with an extremely poor work rate. Size is definitely important in the NRL but conditioning even more so.

I like him at his current weight.

I'd like:

1. Mamo
2. Uate
3. Sione
4. Gagai
5. Chanel
6. Mullo
7. Hodko
8. Snowden
9. Levi
10. K sims
11. T sims
12. Rochow
13. Smith

14. Randall
15. Paea
16. Pauli Pauli
17. Tapine

Done :)
