Rookie of the year.

I was just wondering, what is the criteria for Rookie of the year? Joel Edwards has been named a favourite but didn't he debut last year?

i think that if you play less than 3 matches in your first season that your still eligible for the rookie of the year award in the next season. did edwards debut this year or last?

Firstly i think there's a thread for this already. Secondly where have you heard about Joel Edwards being a favourite? i'd be interested in seeing that. Thirdly i'm pretty sure the rules are anyone who debuts in 2011 is eligible & anyone that has 4 games or under from 2010 & they debuted in 2010 is eligible also.

Although it might be 3 games, not sure on that part.

4 games from last year.

Daly Cherry-Evans (who will win by the length of the straight)
Will Hopoate
Tariq Sims
Elijah Taylor
Kalifa Fai Fai Loa

5 players who would win it in front of Joel Edwards.

They seem all flashy players, don't get me wrong they are great. But Edwards is just a defensive machine, technically superior. Also not being in the starting line-up regularly would affect his chances.

As mentioned, he wouldn't go anywhere near it. Put on a couple of big hits this season but doesn't rack up the numbers with the ball yet.

That's the problem with nrl these days, don't reward defenders, same can be said for consistent players, the Haynes, Marshall, Dugans, even the Uates (although more consistent then most) are the best players in the world because they show fancy football once every couple of games. Guys like Nightingale, McManus don't get the mention they deserve because they aren't fancy. Only reason why Hindmarsh never gets into origin is because he's not fancy, he's just a really strong tackler.

Elijah Taylor has made 436 tackles in 12 games, Edwards has made 311 in 12 games.
Tariq Sims has made 252 hit-ups in 13 games, Edwards has made 186 in 12 games.

Edwards is a weapon no doubt and sometimes its how you tackle not how many (allthough lots is good too)his tackle on hayne was worth any 10 other tackles in that game did you see his team mates slapping him on the back it lifted them.Edwards reads the play in defense so well and his tackling style is bueatifull , but he isnt making the yards with the ball but that will come. He is still only the second best tackler i have seen lately though, the other is an 8 yr old playing for nelson bay blues under 9s cant remember his name now but he has come up to play with my u10s side and let me tell you this kid makes edwards look ordinary lol no joke never seen anyone tackle as hard or as often in my time as a kids coach and trainer i have never seen anyone like this kid .

Stats mean nothing to what I tried to say, I said he is technically superior not that he makes more tackles than the other forwards.

Or makes more hit-ups, those are what he needs to improve on for sure.

I also said that being a bench player would affect his chances, even though he is starting there lately because of injury.

Actually its only worth one. Unless it comes up with an error it is no different then a normal tackle.

I disagree state of mind is everything and a tackle like that can change the way a team are thinking and playing so imo its not the same as any other tackle .

I've get to see a team completely change how they are playing in game cos one guy got whacked, and that was the reason for it. But if if you care to if an example..

I get what laney is saying. When Edwards puts a big hit on, you can see the team lift their intensity in defence and the best thing about it, is that it's sometimes happening at crucial stages of the game where a team may work their way back into the match.

You said he was a defensive machine, I'd suggest that Elijah Taylor is more of a defensive machine.

You don't win rookie of the year for having an excellent tackling technique or for blind-siding Hayne (although maybe you should).

I watched that over and over, and it got better everytime

A) It did come up with an error.B) You're kidding yourself if you don't think a big hit can have a positive effect on the team. The sport is played by people, not robots. Emotion plays it's part, and you could see that tackle pumped the players up.

I agree. A big hit can definately swing the momentum of a game, even if only for a set of six, but it definately has a positive impact on the team.
