Rogers Hits Out at Booze Ban

South Sydney five-eighth Ben Rogers has lashed out at his dumping from first grade for drinking alcohol.

Rogers was one of four Souths players dropped by coach Jason Taylor for breaking a team decree to register a zero breath-alcohol limit at their recovery session on Saturday.

The playmaker told NewsLtd papers he was "angry, disappointed and unimpressed" with the axing and felt he had done nothing wrong.

"What, are we in the army?," Rogers said.

"If I'd gotten into trouble, got kicked out of a pub or started a fight, then I'd put my hand up and say I was in the wrong.

"That would be fair enough. But I wasn't drunk.

"I'm not real impressed and Souths know I'm not happy."

Rogers, Eddie Paea, Jaiman Lowe and Fetuli Talanoa were dropped for Saturday night's NRL match against North Queensland while David Kidwell has been stripped of the club's co-captaincy.

The struggling Rabbitohs are still winless after seven competition rounds.

This is ridiclous how clubs are doing this these days, a Drinking Culture is part of Rugby league, or pretty much any team sport in Australia or overseas for that matter. Win, loose or draw you go to the pub with your teammates, have a chat and have some fun. Souths will try and do anything to try and spark the team but this is not the right way.

Whats everyone elses thoughts on these Booze Bans?

They are good.

Two beers after a game is enough and that is what the clubs are trying to encourage. Shut up Ben Rogers and act how you are supposed to. Your playing rugby league at the elite level, any fan would gladly take your position.

It is tough work and they have to stick it out. If you dont like it, leave.

You should be able to drink as long as it doesn't stop you from performing your duties to the best of your ability on game day. They are on pretty high paid jobs/contracts and it is a bussiness so that's how it's run these days. Clubs are trying to change the drinking culture and make it more professional But i don't think a total drinking ban is the way.

Sounds mature i know i just made my 200th post so now i'm a senior member lol lol :) :)

I dont see the problem, Taylor gave them permission to go out but not to drink. Its not like they turned up the next day fully drunk or anything. A little harsh IMO.

Rules are rules and they broke them.
Let this be a lesson, just think it could have been souths first win of the year this weekend. Or maybe not ;)

I dont get it, theyre human beings who either need to drink to celebrate or drink to console themselves.

I know they broke rules but it was in house wasnt it?

It's stupid. He should have the right to drink. Especially if he wasn't drunk! :icon_rolleyes:

If it's a rule, then the ban is fair enough. Rogers should've known better.
However the rule is pathetic.

The rules were set by the players, nobody held a gun to his head to make him sign the agreement.

If he knew the rules then he should pay the penalty and stop whingeing.

It sounds to me like he has a better offer and is looking to get out of his Souths contract.

He should of drank sensibily (sorry about spelling learning english still), fair enough u don't go and break somthing you have agreed on.

His not a bad player either. Lock is his best spot though. Souths lack badly in the halves.

What do players think when there are six in a household with booze?

Like Hello!!!

Shouldn't have drunk, I don't get why all these NRL players go crazy on the drinking anyway. Wouldn't it improve their performance if they stopped?

'Grats, marra!! Just 'cause we're older and type slower doesn't mean we can't contribute!!

Anyhoo, what's a player doing turning up to a recovery session half cut? Or was he still affected from the night before (lack of brush/tooth interface)? Ban the booze on game day, training sessions and club publicity sessions. Otherwise, so long as he's not off his head then what's the problem?

Thing is they werent.

It was a relatively quiet drink amongst them.

Surely he knew there was a ban on drinking though? I can't imagine a club enforcing a rule the players knew nothing about. And stripping a player of co-captaincy over it!

Whether the ban is correct or not is another matter, but I don't have a problem with an alcohol ban ...

They all knew, apparently they all signed, at the start of the season.

Well yeah the players are at fault then. Stupid rule though imo.

The game is about fun, and the players should be able to enjoy a beer with eachother after a win at the least (even though the Souths are yet to win in 2008  ).

Can't believe the players agreed on it though.

My sources tell me that if they didnt signed they would not recive their $5,000 Armani Suits   just joking but maybe if they should spend that kind of money on developing their juniors they would have won a game.
