Remember that random player?

George carmont
George had the most remarkable career of any of our "surprise" players.
He was a good league player as a kid, but gave it away aged about 16 when a friend he played with died in an accident unrelated to League.
He moved to Australia in his mid twenties and started playing League in a second grade side in the Newcastle comp, and went so well he not only made firstgrade but won the real NRL player of the year.
He got a trial with the Knights and was signed to a contract worth about 20k, making him our cheapest player by a long way.
He was just good enough to hold his spot, but got better every game and eventually got good enough to earn a decent ESL contract, where he was one of the best players till he was 34 years old, as well as making the Samoa team 10 times.

In short, he pretty much took up the game at 24 or 25 for Norths/Nelsons Bay 2nd grade and went on to score 112 tries in NRL and ESL in a 9 year career.

Time to dust this off.

Poor ole Ben Cross nearly getting knocked into a coma each week as our only forward who would take a proper hit up.
It was his running style. I saw Ben Criss at a trial in Cessnock when Brian Smith was coach. Ben took his first hit up when he came on, flat out, leading with his chin in an upright stance and being flattened by a Cronulla fireRd(can’t remember who).
Ben stayed down and had to be assisted off the field by trainers.
As he went past the coach , Smith was into him for his stance at the line, and basically told him he got what he deserved.

Some days I randomly remember that we had Steve Southern play for us.

One of the more odd signings we ever made.

I'd take a prime Jeremy Smith and Beau Scott over almost any other backrowers in the comp today. They were past their prime once they arrived in Newcastle and sadly didn't play all that many games together but when someone was unfortunate to be tackled by the two of them simultaneously, fmd, it was pure violence. Particularly Scott, he was un-well.

We used to put some strange players out on the wing back in the day. Thankfully it’s a specialist position now and not just a spot you put someone you couldn’t fit in the team elsewhere.
