Recruitment And Retention Discussion

People just like to follow the leader and hate Sandon for nothing, I decided to use the nrl stat page to see where he ranks before his injury and he was beating some pretty big names in many stats that people on here have raved about.
Without Sandon we're definitely not well entrenched in the 8, but it's been a few months at the same time, not complaining with what he's offered so far considering our depth used to be Adam Clune, Jack Cogger, Tex Hoy, Tyson Gamble, Brock Lamb etc...

Kind of fitting that this great player will end where it all started. I hope he has a good season with the Broncos. Surprised the Bears didn't try to sign him on a two-year deal as the inaugural captain. Would have loved to see him finish in our colours, but we have to plan for our future.

It's crazy we don't have 250k in the salary cap for next year. Much respect for Dane. Played with and against this guy in his early years. Forever a professional after learning early on you can't bugger up without consequence.
I don’t think it’s money, I think it’s a top 30 spot he’d be taking, which would mean we loose one of our young guys we want to keep

If for example, Schiller left, that would have created the spot for Gagai to stay, I assume

I would have loved him to stay. I’m sure he knows the position the club is in and that they would have kept him if they could. He would have been in open and honest conversations with the club all season

Surely it's nothing to do with a top 30 spot. Don't need to have one to play grade nowadays.

Yes, they do, unless there's a dispensation from the NRL.

There's a veterans allowance on the cap for players who have been top 30 at a club for 8 years (guessing KP qualifies for that). But that's only on the salary cap, not on roster spots.

I can't really find any exemptions on the number of roster spots anywhere. If there are any, I can't imagine just wanting to keep a bloke like Gags would trigger such an exemption.

Defeats the purpose of having these rules to spread talent *, i.e., a club like Newcastle, in this case, can either keep a young up-and-comer or a veteran, but not both. Seems to be the system working as intended.

* The cap is also there to stop clubs trying to buy premierships and/or going broke trying.

Pretty sure they changed the rules at the start of this year or last year to,
Development (supplementary) players can play all year.
Players outside the top thirty can play after June 30 without dispensation.

Could be wrong but that how I remember it.

Hunt should getting game time in right centre in Reggie’s. We have essentially 4 guys fighting it out for that right centre spot.
Hunt, Schiller, McCarthy and Winter. And Seve but I think with his age he is still at least a year off.

Maybe Winter leap frogs them all? But I think another pre-season and consistent FG Hunt will be great. He’ll probably put on some more size also.

I think winter is clearly being earmarked as gags replacement

Winter may eventually make that spot his own but as at round 1 next season he surely won't find himself ahead of Hunt.

Winter would need to do some wonderful things in Cup to end the season just to be a shot as Hunt will also be a season more experienced and improved.
