Recruitment And Retention Discussion

Gut feeling is the Sydney media scrutiny will force ponga to leave the knights. He nearly left last contract
If KP goes somewhere else it won’t be because of media scrutiny. He’s never done what the media expects him to.
He’s always done what’s best for him i.e money. He and his family are very well looked after here.

This contract will most likely be about winning a comp. He’s going to be paid well regardless of where he goes.

If there’s any player that’s not going to be swayed by media it’s him. He does what he wants. I think the media actually hate that about him

No one is forcing him to leave. I think we will do anything to keep him and offer equal or more money than anyone else. I think the Dylan Brown signing is a way of showing him that we are serious. If the knights can show KP that they're heading in the right direction and getting closer to being a proper premiership chance I have no doubt he will re sign again.

Anyone remember every time Andrew Johns contract was up?

Constant speculation he was going to go to Brisbane etc. Always re-signed, later said he was never going anywhere.

Now he is a local Cessnock product which is a little different, but the media have only gotten worse over the years with the internet to the point that now to generate content, they are speculating on contracts years out. Also, players tend to leave for "compassionate grounds" as well these days so contracts aren't set in stone anyway.

I haven't seen any sign Ponga is unhappy.

He didn’t play bad at all not great but given the circumstances certainly not bad
He wasn't the one dropping the ball, no.

But a complete lack of ownership of the ball. No creativity. Didn't kick the ball at all, not even any short kicking to alleviate pressure or create points.

He looked like he didn't have anything in his bag other than a failed dummy and run.

Yes, Parramatta are really poor atm and the players around him were even worse. Yesterdays game isn't a representation of him of a player but sheesh, not good to watch considering

Certainly not going to be hitting the panic button with the way Brown is playing at the moment. His team is coming dead last and he’s getting no help whatsoever by players around him.
Even Joey struggled behind a beaten forward pack, and the Eels forward pack looks awful. Hopgood has been a beast, but this season, he must be on track to miss origin selection.

I think Browns down on confidence with the rest of the team tbh. He made a couple of really classy looking runs and was very involved early in the game on Sunday but things went downhill very quickly for them and all theirs heads went down. It’s not surprising, they’ve been rapidly declining as a team since their GF appearance. Moses injury initially didn’t help, but it’s gone beyond that now.

I agree with the general consensus that there’s literally no point trying to take anything from Brown’s current performance to get an indication of how he’ll go for us.

Was listening to the bloke in a bar podcast and I've made a 180. We need to resign Adam Elliot. We are faced with a front row of JSaf and either Jones or croker (fingers crossed Tyrone comes through).

We have missed Barnett and never should have let him go, but Elliot is the closest thing in market to him and provides a mobile tough prop who can play long minutes.

I suspect O’Sullivan is simply looking at it as, he can afford to wait and see.

He’s not going to rush to keep all three of Hetho, KPP and Elliott. All three will stay for the right number if it can be found. But if not he’s probably happy to lose at least one, possibly two.

Factor into all this that if a player is signed with the expectation that they’ll be an every week starter, the vast majority of those players make $400K or more. This may have been what lost us Leo, him being the only starting forward not getting that, despite verbal promises we’d get him to that threshold if he won the starting spot. May have lost him over not being able to find like $150K of space. If another bolter like that comes through the system you need to have the flexibility to take care of him. You lose that flexibilty if you get too desperate over players you like but don’t love.

In saying that, if Elliott liked the sound of two years for a per season number starting with a 4, I would be very keen to get that done lol. I think he’s a comfortably above average starting forward. “Average starter” costs $400K. It’s a no brainer to my eyes.
