Recruitment And Retention Discussion

Is this the biggest signing in the club's history?

Top 5 spine player in his position, just before he should start to hit his prime. 8 caps for NZ.

Has to be up there.
So, the difference between biggest and best, yeah? Best three signings for mine have been Ponga, Kennedy and Sargent, for what we needed at the time and finding the player to fill that spot. Could argue that Hagan was even better then Sargent in those early days, but Sarg is a fave. Kennedy was the "biggest" of those three, already rep quality on the way up.

Biggest, as far as prime rep players and premiership pedigree, I think Darius Boyd, Beau Scott and Tyson Frizell (i think people underestimate how big Friz signing was for us at that time) were bigger then Kennedy, although he turned out to be better for the club and won a premiership, something those three haven't achieved (yet 😉). Honourable mention to Jeremy Smith too.

So, being the biggest, I'd rate Brown bigger than Scott and Friz, behind only Darius as our biggest signing as far as current pedigree and importance of position goes. Controversial i know, but by definition that's where I see them line up. Obviously I have left coaches and administrators out of this, that's a whole different argument.

Ha, yeah, hard to beat Darius as our biggest signing. Two premierships, a Clive Churchill Medal, and an Origin and International regular when he signed. Can only pray this works out a bit better than that. 😂

Absolute "quality" here from Dan Nichols of Zero Tackle here:

Brown hasn't played a game for the club, they don't actually know what his contract is, and there's no attempt to put the deal into any sort of context regarding the difficulty of getting players to Newy, the cost across the whole spine, insurance in case Ponga does not re-sign, etc.

It's already the 10th worst contract in history...apparently...I'm sure this bloke would have written the same article about DCE back in the day but not the one 10 years later admitting he got it wrong.

There’s a new Rothfield interview with O’Sullivan in the Telegraph in the wake of the Brown signing. Nothing that newsworthy in it, not like he was going to come out and say everyone doubting the deal is right.

O’Sullivan shook hands with Brown’s manager over the deal in a New Lambton cafe on Friday last week (same day as Knights v Tigers, 2 days before the Eels game) and agreed to keep it secret until Monday. Says he doesn’t care about the media reaction because the Knights know what they’ve signed and are very happy with it. Mentions that Dylan always had been a halfback in juniors until playing with Moses, but also points to Hughes and Cronk as examples of players who “weren’t halfbacks” early in their careers and went on to be elite ones.

POS has always thought of Dylan as being in the very top tier talent-wise, when he was at the Warriors he offered a teenaged DylBro essentially the same contract as the one which got Kalyn to come to Newcastle.

Imagine if he’s right. Two top five players in the comp. Would be worth every penny.

Now that we have signed Brown for 10yrs and Ponga come of contract 2027 - should we lock him down with an extension now that takes him to the end of Brown contract?

Stop all the talk in media too

If he’s willing then sure, but my guess is he’ll be waiting to see the effect of the next TV deal on the salary cap.

I'd be hoping to see an extension by end of season/pre-season, probably 2-3 years and designed liked Clearys to take 200k off each season so there is room in cap for junior/big prospect. I don't want to see is contract go anywhere near into 2026 season because its alllllllll we'll hear about. Will distract him and team

Yeah he strung it out last time to achieve max $, early 26 we need to have it done or its going to be another circus, surely the club is already looking to get him extended, you think they would say we are offering x amount at minimum but we ensure you will always be Y% of the cap. Thats the only way i see him committing before he has too.
