Recruitment And Retention Discussion

Interesting Riccio said Brown’s management think he can go to Newcastle and live up to the hype. Obviously they would say that but makes it sound like even his own management are trying to convince him to just take the money. Seems like if he signs here it’ll be kicking and screaming.

Considering they take a percentage of his income, you would hope they are interested in making money for themselves.

Does anyone actually know how much extra he stands to make at Newcastle? And if the extra years towards the end of the contract are mutual options they're almost redundant.

Yeah as the days go on I’m not holding my breath he has a (reportedly) great deal with job security and massive money and it’s still taking this long?

I don’t think he is coming, hope I’m wrong though

They had talked about there being ratchet clauses in the deal on 360 last week to be fair, wasn't just made up last night, but the journo (Brent Read I believe) specifically said even with the clauses the salary could only ever go up to $1.4m. Braith was talking about the new TV rights deal making the cap jump significantly like it would mean Brown's deal would also go up at the same rate, either ignoring or forgetting what was said on his own show a few days ago.

If the above is true then the potential deal could age pretty well, although things are never that simple in rugby league. If he's performing well on $1.3-4m and the cap goes up by a lot you can rest assured his management wouldn't just be sitting on their hands, they'd be looking for an upgrade.

Perfect, we win a premiership in 2026 or 2027.

Couple years after that cap goes up he wants to re negotiate we just give him permission to talk to other clubs.

Just need to have a jr developed in time or a better priced replacement lined up. Win, win situation we get out premiership and don't get stuck with a an aging player

(UNRELIABLE SOURCE ALERT)

A person on the Eels forum has said that Brown has informed team mates he is staying and that a deal should be released soon.

Make of that what you will it’s not a reliable source but something I thought I’d put down

New Telegraph article on Brown that basically goes over the ratchet clause situation. Says there is a ratchet clause but limitations on how high the salary can/will rise. Also says the deal being offered would mean Ponga remains the highest paid player at the club for the remainder of his current deal.

Changes course to talk about how Brown’s decision could impact other upcoming free agent halves, in particular Lachlan Galvin who still has a year on his deal. At the very end speculates that the Knights could make a play for Galvin if they miss Brown but seems like it’s just putting 2+2 together rather than breaking any news.

I'd take Galvin over Brown. And it's possible we could get Galvin for next season in a player swap if we somehow signed him for 2027

Mosses out for 6 weeks, get to see how Brown goes for a bit longer without him.

Nat Butcher dropped out of the Roosters side (not sure why but they didn't say he was injured).
Would we want him as an experienced middle if he becomes available?

In hindsight someone should have created a thread for DL contact!
Good point haha.

Yeah i saw Immortal Behaviour earlier and found Joey’s comments quite interesting. He didn’t expand too much on them which would have been better.

Joey has done extensive work with Brown too when he was a consultant at the Eels. If memory serves there were rumours of a falling out and then he came back to Newcastle.

I don’t listen to Joey any more, I mean imo he was the greatest ever 7 but in terms of recruiting and coaching he is pretty useless don’t forget this was the guy who pushed hard for Pryce even targeting the coach because he wouldn’t play him.

He also said he expected KPP to come over and be one of the form second rowers in the comp.

Joey has been wrong a lot more than right and I don’t listen to anyone who talks like they have all the ideas but never puts the money where his mouth is.

I believe in the early years Joey also said Moses wasn’t a 7, just because he is a PLAYING great doesn’t mean anything in coaching.

So here’s another article quoting Joey. And I’ve been in agreeance with him in past comments on the forum. He’s not a 7, will he be? The reported deal is not what he’s worth IMO, available halves talent or not.

Matty was asked about signing Dylan to a 10 year deal to play 7 on the late show last night. He was trying to dance around the question but I don’t think he’s a fan of it. He did bring up Metcalf on the weekend like I thought he would.
