Going off Holbrook a bit with our defence completely falling to pieces, he’s not the person who’s going to turn that around. But hopefully that was just due to the circumstances around the end of the season/nothing to play for/coach gone/injuries and we can turn it around quickly next year.
 
I'm still a bit shocked Holbrook is even in the conversation. 38% win rate over 3.5 years at the titans, had a losing record every season and made the finals once in 2021 with a record of 10 wins 14 losses. I'm not sure any other NRL club would even consider him as an option.

In my opinion as no proven "big names" are an option we need to try and find the possible next "big name". No coach can prove if they can be a success without an opportunity. Bennett, Bellamy, Cleary etc were all once rookies looking for a chance. I get that we tried this with AOB and failed but I would go this route again every time rather than resort to a failed retread.

It was the Titans no coach could do well with that rabble, Holbrook toke them to the finals, made them exciting to watch, gave them an identity of the entertainers.

Des couldn’t do any of that, with our roster many believe Holbrook could succeed

I guess the counter to this is Cleary was sacked twice before his current stint at the Panthers. Warriors wasn’t exactly a sacking, but like Brian Smith here back in the day, a one year contract extension offer is pretty much inviting you to look elsewhere.

Yes Cleary made a GF with the Warriors and both decisions to sack him were dumb, but history has proven the Titans’ decision to sack Holbrook was equally stupid.

Early in his career I believe Bennett was also sacked as coach from his Queensland Cup side.

Isn't that more of a black mark against Des and that they game may have passed him and his coaching methods by? Unless Holbrook being "less worse" than Des is something you're looking for in the next coach. Maybe Garth Brennan can get an interview aswell. He had a better winning % at the titans also.

I have no idea what the answer is, but has their been a coach in the NRL era that has failed as badly as Holbrook did at their 1st coaching role that has then shown a great improvement at their 2nd destination?
 
Interesting bit added to the Badel article:

"Former Wallabies coach Michael Cheika has also been linked with the job and whispers emerged on Wednesday that he and Green were weighing up a joint bid for the position.

It is understood the pair met earlier this week, fuelling the suspicion that they were ready to pitch a plan where they would work together at the Knights."
 
That gives more credence to the Cheika link IMO. I reckon he'll only be a short-term coach (IF he ever gets a chance) and the Knights were planning on Green taking over after AOB's contract ended anyway. Could have Cheika for 2 years as some sort of cultural reset while Green takes on the more tactical side and gets a couple more years of seasoning. Think that's more interesting to me than either Holbrook or Green alone, but maybe that's just because it's the biggest swing and not necesarilly a good thing.

Toohey straight up said "no" when asked if Cheika was a chance a few days ago, though.

I would really hope that MCDERMOTT is retained as defence coach and doesn’t go to the Titans.

I think we have a lot of players who are naturally good, competitive defenders, and also we're in a bit of an era atm where kind of no one can defend besides Canterbury & Penrith. The inability to attack in an era where attacking has never been easier is killing us more IMO.

But a good to great defence is the base upon which successful teams are defined.
