Danny 'Bedsy' Buderus
Yeah he was named at 7 in their “team of the century”. First player to play 200+ games for them. There used to be a stand named after him at the SFS. He was never regarded as the best halfback in the comp & kept getting overlooked for rep footy, but he’s definitely regarded as one of their greats.Haha, thanks for the insight. I thought the same thing as Lefty. But yes, I'm aware is Dad was a good footy player. Never seen him play, and didn;t realise he was that good.
I may be being a little unfair doing the “how many great halfbacks have they produced in 100 years?” thing because basically the halfback becoming *the* most important position in the game doesn’t really start till the 80’s, the tail end of Kevin’s career. But still even since then that’s a big club Easts and Pearce is still the best 7 to come through their pathways in the “it’s all about the halfback” era… they would have loved to have developed a Johnathan Thurston!
So yeah… it’s just hard to develop them. Heaps of the ones who pan out to be elite don’t even have this neat “I developed at one club” story either, they kind of don’t pan out as a kid and then their “development” actually happens bouncing around in QCup.
There’s a school of thought in player development that you’re better off emphasising a production line of elite athletes - outside backs and forwards - and then just parachuting smart experienced 7’s into that team one after another. You can see the logic. It’s kind of what the Roosters have relied on really.
