NEWCASTLE KNIGHTS V CANBERRA RAIDERS - 4.05PM Sun 21st Aug - MJS Newcastle

I do admit as soon as the Raiders scored in the second half I messaged my brother saying “beginning of the end for us” 😔
At least your brother didn't rip Into you for not bothering to watch the second half and saying you are a sore loser and hangs **** on you every Knights game.

I told him I will wait to get my enjoyment when the Rabbitohs choke In Preliminary Final.

I'd rather see the rooters choke &/or bow out of the finals all together before the bunnies, my bad.

Listened to AOB’s presser. Didn’t find too much to disagree with, effort was there, looked like some of what they work on in training came onto the field with them for once.

He explained the selection of Keeley + Croker playing back row all afternoon as the team being out of fit back rowers, and Keeley got promoted into the game day 18 as a reward for ripping in at training.

The “out of fit back rowers” thing is absolutely a fib, both Momoisea and Johns played reserves earlier in the day, and I don’t think they ever came into calculations for the first grade squad. But we can’t complain that much I think. We get the ****s on here about certain players dogging it, about the club not having standards, continually giving jerseys to guys who aren’t desperate for them while young players in our system get no shot. I think what we see here without it being said is that Jirah and Jack are, like Best, Tuala, Ponga and Mann, players who’ve been falling short on standards recently (or maybe over an extended period). Possibly Hymel Hunt too given he also played reserves while Mapapalangi was promoted directly to firsts this week.

The smart short term move, given Frizell has been busted for weeks now, would have been holding Johns or Momoisea as 18th or 19th man. But the better long term move, if those guys just aren’t doing enough to earn the jersey, is to reward the guys who are.

Still can’t believe that Hudson young was able to grubber to himself for a try AGAIN he pulled our pants down with it the first time we played them.

I can't get over the last tackle play on the Raiders try line with 9 minutes to go.

Surely just pot the field goal at a minimum, instead of perhaps the least threatening running threat on the field (Clune) taking it to the line and submitting in a tackle. Really deserved the Raiders going 98m to score the game winning try off that stupidity.

Yep it sounds simplistic and cliched but that’s a key separator between the halves who have it in first grade and the ones who don’t.

Game on the line, scores level, do you try and make something happen, or do you decide to not risk making a mistake and meekly hand the ball over?

Field goal absolutely the play there given the grind the game had settled into.

momoisea leaving at seasons end, there absolutely no point in giving him gametime.

Haven’t been convinced of Clune for a while now, maybe his leg is cause, anyway I am ready for the criticism but I would seriously consider Crossland at 7, Mapapalangi 6 and Milford 1 for rest of season.
Not saying Crossland would be better more stronger and has a bigger kicking game

Milford doesn't have the speed or fitness to play 1 anymore. As for the other 2 well it's a gamble but only 2 rounds left. Might aswell have a crack at something different.

I would not mind seeing Crossland given a game at halfback, just to see how he goes, if he does not play well, it will confirm the belief that he should not be resigned.

Clune started the season well, that last tackle option yesterday was very disappointing.

If we don't get Garrick surely we offer an 100k contract upgrade to anyone in the squad who can spend the off-season learning to kick goals consistently at above 75%. Like it's a closed skill ffs, it all comes down to the amount and quality of practice - nothing more.

This is obviously an aside to this game because he didn't play but it really annoys me that Kalyn hasn't been able to nail this yet, it really is an element of value that we should be confident with him offering to the team every year. In fairness he did kick at 80% this year from his limited attempts (only kicked 12 goals) and he hit 80% in 2019 from a full season as well, but the 69% and 65% in his other two seasons as the main kicker are very frustrating and no doubt costs us tight games.
Barnett has been the best goal kicker we’ve had the last few years but the coach rarely gave him the gig. Over 80% in his career. First year he kicked, he took 5 kicks and nailed them all. Small numbers that his percentages are based on yes, but whose fault is that?

He was kicking last year when Ponga was injured and progressively got worse, when Ponga was back they gave it back to him. Barny ain't great either.

You catch the markers bludging, scoot down the blind side , and find the winger running onto the ball on the inside, who scores a try with 6 seconds remaining @ 97GF
