Mitchell Pearce

He said the same things when he was here.

But that's the life of an alcoholic - long periods of not drinking between falling off the wagon.

For those with a SMH subscription, Mitch has given up alcohol, converted to Islam, married a French woman and now has a daughter!

Giving up alcohol is definitely a good choice for him.

Pretty sure Wayne Pearce never touched the stuff? Would have been a good example for him to follow.

A very ungenerous and factually inaccurate statement. Addiction is a mental disease that people can fix - I've seen that close up in my life. Anyone in the fight at the moment, know that Billy's statement is totally untrue - you can get better, and better can be permanent.

It's literally the most important step of the AA program to accept that addiction is for life and you must keep taking measures to avoid relapse. I've been to hundreds of AA meetings (when working in an addiction unit) where the common introduction is "my name is ---- and I'm an alcoholic. It's been 15 or 20 or however many years since my last drink." Although people with long periods of sobriety were always community members joining the meetings in the addiction unit.

It's the life of the alcoholic - falling off the wagon and how hard it is to avoid that is literally what they talk about in AA meetings.

Having said that, I once worked with a French psychiatrist who had the interesting belief that alcoholics could become social drinkers and said that was the approach in France, where drinking with food is the norm.
