Men’s State of Origin Game 2 2026 - The Blues Vs The Maroons - 8:05pm Wednesday 17th June - MCG

Even Gould is calling out NSW's poor selections to support a seemingly non-existent game plan.

"...stop listening to advice, stop listening to people in the media, stop listening to experts on panels, stop reading papers, and sit down and analyse the game, get a game plan together and pick a team that can execute the game plan. "

Fair play to the man, Gus has absolutely nailed it here.

Billy had more weird selections, but every player Billy picks, *he* knows why, *he* knows their role, *he* knows the plan.

Laurie is literally just reading Fox and picking the names the blowhards say he should. Guarantee it.

A lot of the meh players Billy picked did not actually play well, but there’s no game plan to exploit that, so it doesn’t matter.

I wonder who a good option would be for NSW coach next year? There doesn't seem to be a lot of experienced quality coaches putting their hand up. All the good ones are in the NRL, and I think NSW coaching is meant to be a full-time role?

I'm sensing Paul McGregor in 2027 lol.

I guess Ennis has at least been an assistant recently. Loz has literally done no coaching other than Origin....which apparently is hard.

Our pack should be absolutely dominating them. We are just out enthused and have no bite in attack.

Maybe we are a bit too long sighted with our gameplan?
Feel like our plan is “let’s grind them down, get field position, build some pressure, and points will come”.
Their plan every set seems to be “how can we score points”.

QLD have so much more creativity, intent and an uncanny ability to make some average players look like superstars. Billy and co must be Eminem fans because just like the trailer park girls, they go around the outside and make it look easy.

I thought Lucas was solid, defended well, but didn’t get much ball. We have a wealth of back row options who can do a job, so it was really an unnecessary change to drop Haumole. Basically, our back row is not the reason we lost, or looked terrible game one.
Laurie’s selections, bench use, and overall game plan just diabolical. How TF he can’t understand they need to start Murray, and get a crafty hooker, API or Brails into the game early, is insane.

Surly NSW change that rule and call Ivan Cleary, that’s if he wants to be the NSW coach

I thought they changed the rule to not have current NRL head coaches coaching origin cause it gave that club an unfair advantage when it came to recruitment. I could be wrong on that

If Cleary wanted to do it, the unfair advantage on recruitment won’t be an issue because he is no longer the Penrith coach after next year

Over the Blues for this season, Loz has lost us another series. The only question now is QLD 1-12 or 13+, with the way they're selected, organised and coached, 13+ being the short odds.

Got my Knights cap on today and am just focused on the Knights not dropping the Dragons game with so many out. Winning it will be another big step back towards the finals.

So the Penrith game plan? I wonder if they’re letting Cleary and Yeo dictate what plan they want to play.

We have the people to bring in to absolutely dominate the Queensland pack, I would have Haas, Ford, Keon and May for prop rotations and have Lucas on the left and Haumole on the right with Murray at lock. That should be good enough to pound the ever living crap out of the Queenslanders.

But no let’s do AFB who is crap and got dominated across two games.

Cleary will be out for revenge, it’s his time, the stage is set for him to dominate game 3 and go down as one of the origin greats - the media. Probably.

Absolute brilliant player for Penrith. His kicking game for Penrith is elite too. But besides a few good moments against 12, hasn’t done much. It’s frustrating to watch. Even his usually reliable kicking game, does have the same effect at this level. It’s tricky though, I think he’s the best 7 in club land. So do you pick the best? Or do you give somebody else a go?

Moses long kicking was probably the only thing saving both for game 3 too. Was a good pressure relieving outlet.

Unfortunately, I think Lucas drops out. He looked busy. Seemed determined to get involved early. Lots of tackles. Was always making his runs. Maybe the fatigue got to him a little, he was a bit off the pace in a few breaks down the right, and a few defensive moments. I feel bad for him. I don’t think he’s the issue, but I don’t think the game we play suits his strengths or really involves him. We don’t really shift it to our edges - prefer to give it to our middles to run through the middle. Hopefully he comes back to us intent on proving that he’s a much better player than he was allowed to be.

We look intent on trying to ground out a 8-6 victory. QLD just have the sole intention of scoring points.
Their players just lift to a new level and look like they thrive being in an environment with other great players.
We just always look so disjointed.

I struggle to see what the point was in bringing AFB on for 10 minutes, replacing him with Strange. He didn’t really come on and bend the line, just took some carries.

To’o has dropped significantly. Such an easy target to isolate with a taller winger and kick to them.

Walker, Munster, Ponga and Grant all play their origin role superbly. Munster summed up a few of their attacks perfectly with his kicking game.

Feel like Sharpe would offer more at fullback than Tedesco sometimes.
A few painfully obvious observations:
Cleary was well below his best, but had to be needled for his hip pointer injury.
Laurie looks stunned during the game when the cameras were on him. His only accountability is”it is what it is, but we have to be excited about the challenge at Suncorp”. Put simply, he has nothing and the game has passed him by. I have no idea what Laurie’s style of play is, so can’t understand some of the team selections.
Tedesco is fried. Other than one attempt at contesting a kick near QLD line, he wasn’t spotted. Edwards did nothing wrong and should never have been replaced.
Our forwards have just not cut it in this series and have not displayed any mongrel. It was great to see Lindsey Collin’s play Origin football last night!
NSW have played a style of football from a different era. The Trent Loredo try for QLD was a prime example of the contemporary style being played in the NRLatm.
QLD get Original so much better than NSW. Just watching Ponga getting around the QLD players before half time break with enthusiasm, then watching the NSW team as they trudged off(even though NSW were leading) said it all for me.
All aspects of Origin football for NSW needs a brutal review of the scorched earth variety as we have gone from the penthouse with Maguire to the ****house with Daley over a very short period, and essentially with the same or very similar team.
Take the time to select a coach who knows what they are doing both technically and on a human level, and at all costs , avoid a past it, irrelevant, wannabe who has mates in the organisation.

Seriously, how can you or I know what Daley’s game plan is when he doesn’t know himself

I agree Tedesco should never have been selected in this series. He was awful in game 1, he hogs the ball and kills attacking movements. He had one great moment in game 1 and people forget about the other 79 minutes where he was terrible

If the NSW side was an NRL side, I’d say the coach has lost the dressing room, that team last night was not playing for Daley in my opinion. His treatment of Olakau’atu may well have been the final straw for them

Dessy? Feel like his eccentricity and personality could actually suit 3 games of Origin a year rather than an NRL team.

Ponga is in an interesting position re World Cup selection.
He has been talking about playing for NZ, but on current form, he must be favourite for Australian fullback right now.

He's committed to NZ, he'll be the Kiwis fullback 100%.

Ponga has no interest in playing for Australia though, he wants to play for NZ
