Mathews and Ball 2024

I was at both games this afternoon, Ball did enough to win and Flegg were on par with NSW Cup.

Ball were not at their best today and kept the Eels in the game with far too many unforced errors (mainly from the outside backs). The middles were very good, with Hopwood outstanding again (won Players Player).

The Flegg boys were over-run in the first half by a very physical Raiders side. As with our Cup side the opposition just ran harder and tackled harder (the basics of the game that haven’t changed since 1908). Unforced errors killed us too. The boys did come back in the second half, however the Raiders intensity did drop due to their comfortable lead. I think the 12 point score line flattered us.

Very disappointing weekend for our top 3 grades. Parr and O’Brien were in attendance today.
Any Idea how long Cup and Flegg get to train together? From what mates at game on Thursday said the defence from CUP was like touch footy. zero effort. Definitely not what Ronald is about!

I don’t have an answer for you. Their performances replicated each other… lack of physicality with and without the ball and low completion rates. Our forwards were overrun in both these games. It is a real concern if we get several injuries in the forwards in first grade.

De Courcey back
Aoake on the wing with Walker not named
Malachi Smith returns on the bench
Whaiapu starting
This is the strongest side that has been selected in Ball this season.. De Courcey is a big in, Walker paid the penalty for 3 handling errors playing the ball last week, Malachi Smith’s distribution from dummy half will enhance our go forward and Whaiapu was really good starting the week before against Manly.

Who is Hunt? What's his profile
He's a kid from Warren out west who made a name for himself in the schoolboys championships last year. We signed him for 3 years apparently.
He wasn't named in the starting side till Jye Linnane got injured. He stepped in at 5/8 and immediately started scoring tries, throwing 20 metre passes, doing pin point kicks - basically looking like he he is a good sized athletic guy who has every skill.
I get the feeling that we haven't seen his best yet, because every week he comes up with a try assist or scores a try in a new way.

A good summation.

He reminds me of a young Cliffy Lyons when he first came up to Sydney to play with North Sydney. He is a bigger body five-eighth, with a very cool head and has beautiful hands. He has the ability to play structure, however can play ad-lib as well. He was the reason our wingers scored 4 tries last weekend.

I am excited about the prospect of Linnane playing inside him in Flegg next year. Linnane’s running game will compliment Hunts ball playing. He looks our best 5:8 prospect since Jarrod Mullen came through.

That's a big call based on 4 or 5 good games, but he does look better and better each week.
This week will be a big test against the unbeaten Roosters. The winners this week go to top of the table. We could drop to 4th if we lose.

Crazy situation though hey. We all were heartbroken to see Linnane go down. I personally thought that would be it for SG. Then Hunt comes out and we barely skip a beat. Great work by Loaza too. Great runner of the ball himself, showing he is able to get team around park.

Who knows they may have ended up together in halves, but they are a lot alike. But the young halve stocks look great.

Getting excited by Chase Butler and Kuda Hall in AJohns cup too. I his semi finals are on this weekend.

A player that caught the eye last week was centre Jeremy Trappett. This was his first game in Ball after coming down from Wynnum-Manly. He is a full-back, however he put on a very good display at centre last weekend and has held his spot with DeCourcey returning from suspension.

He was in the QLD SOO under 18 emerging squad in 2022.

I will stand by that call as this kid has skills you can’t coach and will greatly benefit by training with the top 30 squad next pre-season.

Even if we lose this weekend we should still finish second if you look at the draw.

I never said he was as good as Mullen, just believe he is showing skills up there with any other prospect that has come through our juniors since then.

Wish we could watch the game. Nice work NSWRL. 🥴 should be an aggressive battle. Both teams pretty cocky.

Lozza needs to improve his defence as his first contact was poor last week, as he repeatedly fell off tackles.

Based on our close come from behind win over the Dragons and the Roosters thumping the Dragons last weekend this is going to be a real test for our boys.
