Mathews and Ball 2023

Try score in the regular season of Ball - the race is on.

Ethan Ferguson 12
Fletcher Sharpe 12
Elijah leaumoana 6
Jayden Harris 5
Jye Linnane 4 (+5 in Laurie Daly cup)
Jermaine McEwen 3
Kyle McCarthy 3
Travis May 2
Jarome Falemoe 2
Myles Martin 2
Kyle Colburn 2
Taj Blackman 2

Cooper Bigeni

We'll finish second in Mathews behind Penrith and 3rd in Ball behind Raiders and Penrith, unless Wests can spring a big upset and get a 12 point win over Raiders - then we'd finish 2nd behind Penrith in both grades.

So we officially finished;
Under 16s - top of Northern division - lost grandfinal
Under 17s - 2nd on ladder - play our first final in 3 weeks
Under 18s - top of Northern division - lost qualifying final
Under 19s boys - 3rd on ladder - play our first final in 2 weeks
Under 19s girls - 3rd on ladder - play our first final in 2 weeks

Geez Votano is just a class above everybody else on the field...and DAMN quick over any distance - he just smoked everybody and looked like he had more in him🤑

Knights at 3:25

My only real concern with Zammit moving on is if some of the kids he signed follow him wherever he goes next. A few followed him here from the Cowboys (including Jacob Kiraz). McEwen & Leaumoana in particular are exciting prospects.

He probably won't get games in Flegg because he is 2 years young and we have a lot of halves to squeeze in, but Jye Linnane looks so good in every highlights package.

Just looked at some highlights. I try not to look at much lower grades stuff because I feel like I’m often disappointed by the final result with a lot of these kids, but god damn that’s an athlete and a half. Leaps off the screen at you. Wow.

Finishing 2nd in Mathews is a solid result.
Jack Hilliar is our standout player and he has struggled with injury all season and isn't super fit even when he's injury free.
Last year Hilliar was a year young and was still the best player in the side. Votano was also a year young and went OK, but not really a standout.
In round 1 it looked like Hilliar was going to a new level and would carry us all season, but only a few rounds in he got injured and all the other guys, especially Votano, had to step up.
Anyway, Hilliar has been back for the last few games and we have jumped from 5 placed to 2nd place with 2 good wins, even with Hilliar playing short minutes.
Because we finished 2nd, we get a bye in round 1 of finals, which gives us 3 weeks to get Hilliar fit, and with a fully fit Hilliar, plus all the others who have stepped up like Hagan, Dorahy, Blair, Loza etc - we are really in this now. The only flogging we got all season was from Penrith, and we shouldn't come up against them till GF. We can beat anyone else easily.

Missed this last night with the crazy game. But well done the lads, Melachi Smith had a wowza, scoring 2 tries, Roosters be pissy about that. Knocking them out is a sweet feeling. Now to seek revenge against Penrith for knocking us out last yr.

Billy is this Sharpe & Fergo's last year in SG? into Flegg next yr?

Yes - Sharpe, Fergo, Martin, Blackman, Smith are all done with Ball, hopefully after we win the GF in 2 weeks.
I expect all those and several others will play Flegg before the season is done, many of them in 3 weeks from now.
Jye Linnane and a few others will be young enough for Ball next year.

Flegg looking strong from the get go next yr then, possibly Cup for some of them, start playing against some bigger lads.

End of an era for core SG lads

Linnane, Votano, McEwen and Harris new leaders!

Last year was the year we had our strongest Ball side in a while. Just bad luck with injuries cost us a loss in the qualifying final. But we had Sutton and Henderson in the halves, Nailagoliva at hooker, forwards like Keeley, Bradbury, Bryan, Martin and backs like Sharpe, Ferguson, Vea'ila and Plizner.
This year needs a bit of luck to win the GF. The only thing that stopped Last year winning was bad luck.

Hopefully Bryan can come back from his ACL injury well. Quality player. I feel Linnane, whilst quite young is a step above Sutton with Hewndo probably the better organiser. Good headache though.

Mathews, Ball and Tarsha Gale all play this week for a place in the Grand final.

Mathews play Parramatta at Leichardt oval at 4.15 PM Saturday who we haven't played in Mathews since 2019

Ball play Penrith at 1pm Saturday at Leichardt oval. Penrith beat us in the regular season and knocked us out in this game last year before going on to win the title.

Tarsha Gale play Roosters at Leichardt Oval 2.45pm Saturday. They beat us in the regular season 22-10 and beat us 12-10 in last years GF.

All 3 games are webcast on facebook.

Only change to Ball is Aoake replaces Coburn on the wing. Coburn injured himself scoring his 3rd try, but Aoake is a very good replacement, so we don't lose much.

Jack Hilliar starts at prop in Mathews. He is our secret weapon in the finals. He was the player of the year in Mathews last year and showed how dominant he is in the first few rounds, but was then injured and missed a heap of games. He played 2 games before the finals with short minutes, but has now had 3 weeks off to train and is 5 weeks back from injury, so I expect he is ready for 2 big games to finish off our season, and he is the best forward in the comp I think.
