Kalyn Ponga discussion

I’m a bit conflicted.

The selfish Knights supporter in me says get him home to Bar Beach and let him start soaking up the rays and get him hungry for another season. I’ve got a tonne of cotton wool being delivered ASAP.

The other side is intrigued and thinks that this obviously means a lot to him to try and rush back (seems unlikely, and probably just a bit of publicity… I’m curious to see how they go without him, he was their best last game). Anyway, for him to want to play, tells me he’s either silly (he’s got form playing when injured) , or he’s passionate and wants to play for the kiwis.

I’m a little curious if the old strawberry milkshake drinking, OG toilet scandal Ponga would be that keen to rush back.

I think he’s matured an awful lot for this 2026 season. I think he is driven at the moment and determined to achieve some great things and I feel like he's recognised the need for hard work to supplement his natural talent. And outside looking in, he looks comfortable. He seems the type of personality that would thrive when he’s content and happy. (Over the years I’ve been nervous he will pull the plug on Newcastle at any moment - but now, I’m convinced he’s truly happy here and has fully bought in and I think this is transitioning to his Kiwi career, he can play for the teams he’s passionate about and mean a lot to him - Knights, QLD and Kiwis.

I’ve long been critical of our injury management. Soft tissue vs bone is definitely a bit trickier. I’d much rather a broken arm than a torn muscle or worse. They’ll chuck some screws and plates in and it’ll be stronger than our arms.

I was VERY worried about Francis dislocating his elbow again. But less concerned about Lucas re- injuring himself. It was probably more likely Lucas did a muscle injury than aggravate his ankle.

I don't care what any of the 'experts' say. To me he is by far the best and most influential player in the game today..

Better than Cleary
