Kalyn Ponga discussion

Spot in post. It’s also why he was gun shy to run it back in that position. It’s all past tense now though, he’s been very eager for first contact in 1st two games. I think he need to not lead the contact and transfer it to enthusiasm in joint line speed.

If drs say he’s good to go next week or two, need to tackle with fellow players. Not rush out.

Likes of ficus e and Keary have suffered but still playing. Err on side of caution, but hopefully still a strong safe future for the kid.
Keary same as ponga copped a knock to start this year In training I think it was he is still playing think he should be sweet after the dolphins game this could be just a one off unlucky hit but I do worry if it happens in the next month it could be shut him down for the year he is still to young enough to not shut his career off but definitely see him sitting out 12 months if it happens once or twice again

None of us are doctors (I don’t think), but he’s copped a lot of concussions recently … they’re becoming more and more frequent. Does he get one more shot? If he comes back and is concussed a week or two after returning, his long term future would have to be in question.

It would have to be a very real possibility, some of his knocks last year had nothing in them.

I honestly think it is time Kalyn medically retired, the poor bloke cannot finish a game and is getting concussed more and more frequently.

Its just the way the world is these days, law suits and accountability for everything, (probes for the best mind you)
Back in the day more then half the hias be shaken off and keep on going and we never even know how the players are
Just ask Johns how much he played through.
Its the Doctors are picking up every head knocks they getting and taking off for assesment....end of the day its the players risk for reward.
He wont he the 1st and last star in the game to go through all this

I suppose it's just me who thought it looked pretty suss yesterday.
The knock didn't look like much, but despite everyone telling him to not lay around after a headknock after what happened last week, he went straight to ground and had a little sleep, till he jumped up and looked just fine for the rest of the day.
Meanwhile, Brailey got up as quick as he could and tried to look unaffected, but was staggering around like he had 15 schooners in warm up.
Ponga got level 1 and Brailey got level 2. I'd have called it the other way around. I didn't see any sign of Ponga being concussed other than him lowering himself to the ground and playing dead, while Brailey was clearly staggering for minutes.

Not sure Joey is the greatest example: https://i.stuff.co.nz/sport/league/...n-on-concussions-contributing-to-his-epilepsy

I agree with your assessment but I think the reason why they gave Ponga a Grade 1 Is because of his history with concussion.

I can't think of any other reason why.

Umm, if you lose consciousness like Ponga clearly did, it’s category one. Also falling straight to the ground like he did is category one.

Ponga’s injury puts a huge question over our season. We may be without him for the rest of the season. Other players such as Hastings, Gamble and Miller will need to step up.

At least our team should learn not to be so overly reliant on him.

Hopefully the medical staff and the Knights will do what is best for his long term healt.

If he’s out for the season you don’t get cap relief I don’t think because the injury occurred in a game. I do think he’ll just be back in round 4 though.
He has to be medically retired for us to see any cap relief unfortunately.

But I do think there should be something of the sorts If a guy Is going to sit out 3/4 of the season should It come to that.

I honestly think the club needs to start planning and thinking about this, he is our highest paid player and cannot finish a game. They also need to think about his health and future.

He should be medically retired and then we can use his money for other players.

He needs to be moved back to fullback. He’s not going to survive defending in the front line.
Is he really going to last back there either? I dont want to lose the bloke, he is the best chance of our club doing anything in the foreseeable future.

That said, honestly if I was him I would be having a long think about continuing to play the sport because he could end up a vegetable. I am sure he has made enough money to set himself up.. he was a pretty good golfer when he was younger right?

Well he's had far more concussions at fullback than he's had at five eighth. Not like he has only just started getting them with the position change. Wherever he plays he'll have to make tackles.
