Kalyn Ponga discussion

We have all seen enough to know Sharpe is going to be a super star. And on top of that he’s a Newy boy. I’m sure he does not want to leave and I’m sure the Knights will not let him go. If that means letting Ponga go that is what will happen. As HVG mentioned the easy option is to pick Sharpe. I have no doubt Sharpe is a 1mil + player his next contract.

Give Ponga the option, leave before you get fired, honour his contract, let him stay until his current contract finishes but explain that the preference is for him to leave on his terms, head held high, explain that if he was to leave we would play Sharpe at f/b, get a decent to very good 7 and at least a couple of experienced props.
If Ponga and his agent, Dad, consider options they would immediately look at other NRL options or NZ Union.
The split would then be likely very amicable for both sides
My opinion for our success

Being a local boy and bleeding knights like he does, he will always give 100% enthusiasm, energy, passion unlike a lot of outside recruits. A superstar born and bred in Newy makes him the best player we could hope to get.

If and its a massive if the club decides they want him gone, you dont let his contract expire, he becomes a bargaining chip to move him before contract expiry... And im fully aware this is next to no chance happening. If politis wants him send us walker, dolphins . Katoa etc .. my dreams are free at this stage of the night so go easy on me 😅😅

Having Sharpe as the FB option puts us in a position we’re we are now not desperate to keep Ponga at the club. So he may stay for less or he moves on. It’s should be considered a swap for a quality halve be considered. Walker would be great but would the Rooster consider that. Not so sure. I doubt the Dolphins want to lose Kotoa.

Isn’t Hammer their established FB….?

I think we have to leave sharpe at 6.
He hasn’t had a bad game there and it’s very, very early days. All he needs to work on is ball-playing and kicking.
I feel for Kalyn because he is going to be the one crucified for the lack of ball-playing Sharpe currently has. There is no one in the game better on an edge getting early ball than KP.
Sharpe will develop that, but he needs time. We all knew the transition was going to take time, but Sharpe has far exceeded our expectations at 6 collectively. People were worried about his D. I think he’s one of the better defensive 6s in the comp this year.
What we need to be patient with is his lack of ball-playing.
To be honest, short-term I have 0 doubt our best side has 1.KP 5.Sharpe 6. Gamble and 7. Hastings.
But we need to think long-term. Sharpe would rightfully leave the club asap if we put him on the wing again. Hastings is a prick and should be gone asap. Gamble isn’t a 7 and between Sharpe and Brown has no future at 6.
But atm, Gamble and Hastings are the ones who would give Kalyn the best ball (not to mention Lucas as we saw tonight). Sharpe on the wing would take the Marzhew high ball issues and errors off our hands. He’s also add speed and ball returns to our fringe. Bradman feeding Sharpe ball would be mouthwatering.

But yes, if we care about a long-term vision and not just winning a handful of games this year - we stick with KP at 1, Sharpe at 6.
Gamble isn’t a 7. The 7 is out of Hastings and Cogger. Gamble to 14. Brailey has been trash and Phoenix not much better (his defence saves him though)

What would the uproar be if a ponga upgrade costs us fletcher sharpe, not a problem for the next 2 seasons, but the time will come. Unless we plan on making sharpe the 3rd million dollar player in our spine.
At the same time a desicion will need to be made

I tend to think we’re all a little overzealous in criticising KP and wanting to trade him (I say we because I’m among those people).
But man, if we lost Sharpe because of KP - I would be absolutely fuming.

Hammer is equally good if not better at centre.

This is a money thing. I agree with you. Look at Trell. He’d be the best centre in the game if he played club footy there. But my understanding is fullbacks get more money.
Hammer, Trell and Turbo - I’d play them all at centre. Turbo fully fit is a genuine fullback. But at this stage of his career, I think he’d be better in the centres

Absolutely spot on.

Dunno if people on here have seen, but Ponga started Queensland Origin training late because of a quad injury he took into the camp.

Seems like he’s had a few injuries affecting him this season.

The quad injury he picked up late in the last game we had
