How do we feel about Brian Smith at the moment?

there is a current ad campaign in newcastle that brian features in that he asks for a far go with the knights basically, saying we have a common goal of having a greater knights team. he tries to say that he is doing all he can for the team even though others may not agree.

personally i will wait til the end of a season before i make a judgement but at the moment i agree with him, he is doing his best for the knights that he can and thats all we can ask, i may not agree with his methods but time will tell.

Minus all the tension, i think that a clean out is the first step of a fresh start.

Last year, with the Joey, Newton and Reynoldson affairs, plus the terrible season due to injuries just added fuel to the fire.

I say give him till the end of the season to show us what he's got, then make a decision.

He will hopefully have it a bit easier next year with less controversy and therefore less tension from players. If the scenes from after the Tigers game at the end of last year are anything to go by then the players will be looking forward to playing under Smith again. It was great to see Smith shaking players hands as they came into the dressing room and the players happy to do so after everything that happened. Also Smith has said that he has finished up recruitment for the next few years (I'm sure I saw that somewhere) meaning that the team will remain largely unchanged and happy.

I would give him till the end of the season then pass judgement on what he has done as what he has done is only starting to take effect.

I think that that win against the Tigers was a huge turning point for the Knights. It was a good way to end a terrible season, and would probably give the boys some confidence heading into next season.

Brian would have been really relieved with it too, i think that if they hadn't managed that win, there would have been some more conspiracy for him to get the sack.

I honestly think Brian is doing a good job. What alot of people cant understand is that the knights board and in general most people wanted Knights players to perform. Something they were not doing at all.

We cant expect to go top 8 each year... sure great achievement but cmon, about time we became a team like Melbourne. Strong.

I feel for Brian, his copping so much **** when all his doing is his job.

That's what coaches have to put up with. The board want results, and fast. Not just with Newcastle, but also with other clubs.

For example. look at Ricky Stuart at the Roosters, Chris Anderson at the Roosters (Sure he retired, but the string of losses wouldve contributed).

I'm not disagreeing, because i completely agree with you.

But then theres Fittler, look at what he did to the Roosters. I mean look at the way they defeated Melbourne when Melbourne was annihilating teams week in week out.

I personally don't rate him as much of a coach but this year will tell. If we do well i will admit i ws wrong if we do bad thats it in my book. He had a tough job this year with the whole clean out, which needed 2 be done but was pretty harsh of the board 2 put on him because they new alotta ppl would not be happy about. Now he has the team he wants he has the perfexct chance 2 show what he is capable of

look I'll get straight to the point here.. I hate brian smith and i believe he shouldnt be the coach of newcastle!!! He has caused so much grief for the newcastle knights and their fans!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I WANT HIM OUT!!!!! I love to see Andrew Johns as the knights coach!!

He's been coach for one year, full of turmoil and pure bad luck with injuries. I don't think that even Johns could have done anything more than Smith did. So you can't blame Smith for it.

Also, there is no way there is ever going to be a clean out of players without someone getting upset, and the string of continuous losses made it even worse.

I think everyone would love to see Joey as a coach, but we all know it won't be happening anytime soon.

yeah i dunno, I guess you are right in some ways.. But he has hurt a few players and their fans..

Yeh Joey would make a good coach but yeah hes since moved to sydney with Cath so i dunno whats gonna happen there. Maybe he'll coach a junior team or something, I really dont know. I guess I should give Smuthy a chance shouldnt I?

And a favour, FORGET ANDREW JOHNS coaching.

I can't say I think Johns would make a very good coach of the Knights, particularly in his current state.

probaby wouldnt be a very good idea having a local hero as a coach of the team anyway, he is friends of too many people and could find it hard to make the tough decisions, also the people high up wouldnt want to upset johns as he has given so much to the club. They needed to bring sumone like smith in who wasnt really affiliated with the club to make non biased decisions.

In the Herald on saturday it said that the knights haven't ruled out having joey in THIS YEAR and that joey is also in talks with another sydney club to help their kickers this year too!
