Hi Everyone! (Introduce Yourself!)

Hey everyone,

Long-time Knights tragic here. Been following the boys since the 90s and was lucky enough to be there for the 2001 premiership. Those moments hook you for life.

I’m based up in Central QLD these days, which has made the last few months a bit rough with all the donkey fans getting around puffed up. Comes with the territory, I guess.

Looking forward to a big year from the Knights and keen to get stuck into the discussions on here. Up the boys.

Hello members,

Long-time reader, first-time poster.

As my name suggests, my love of the Knights began when I was lucky enough to be part of the junior squad during the first couple of pre-seasons in 1988 and 1989. After a couple of years in Flegg, knee injuries ended my playing aspirations. As my parents were foundation members, I took over Mum's seat and attended most home games throughout the 1990s.

Funnily enough, my two most vivid memories don't involve Knights wins.

The first was the 1998 home final against the Roosters. Back then, the opposition coach sat in the stands just in front of us. Gus Gould barely reacted while we built a 15–0 halftime lead. But when the Roosters scored the match-winning try to complete their comeback, he leapt to his feet, turned to the crowd and yelled, "Get that up yous!" before marching off. He was damned scary, and I could definitely see how he'd survived a playing career in the brutal 1970s.

The second memory was from the 1996 game against the Wests Magpies, back in the days when 2HD's commentary was perfectly in sync with the action. As news of the Port Arthur tragedy filtered through the radios everyone had pressed to their ears, people all around the ground slowly stopped watching the game and turned to each other in disbelief. The outpouring of emotion was unforgettable, and many people left to be with their loved ones.

I left Newcastle in the 2000s to pursue work opportunities, but I've barely missed a game on TV since and still get to live games whenever I can.

Long live the mighty Knights!

Wow, great intro, welcome to the forum! That 1998 semi still haunts me, I was on holiday so couldn’t watch live, so I got a friend to record it on vhs for me while I was gone. Then I think the hotel did have it on tv, but I felt obliged to watch the vhs again when I got home, since my friend went to the trouble of recording it. 😂

Definitely a game that’s ingrained into my mind.

You must have some great memories from being a foundation junior!

Thanks for the welcome James.

Thanks for the welcome, James. The one thing that has stayed with me from that time is just how much hard work—combined with a bit of luck—it takes to make first grade, let alone be successful. That's why I have a lot of patience when watching young players develop. The timeline can vary so much, even for those with obvious talent.

Oh definitely. I feel you on the injury front. It's not an easy game let alone performing at the top for extended periods. Lots of players slip through the cracks who should make it but don't. Others get dumped with nothing but a Ah well(me). Good luck in life.
